Magnum P.I. on Cozi TV 12/29/2012 - Good news! Magnum P.I. can now be viewed on Cozi TV, the new digital multicast television network owned and operated by the NBC Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal. The network was formerly known as NBC Nonstop, which was relaunched as Cozi TV on December 20th. Cozi TV airs a mix of classic television series from the 1950s through the 1980s, movies and first-run lifestyle programming. Magnum P.I. will air Thursdays, 8PM to Midnight. The series will debut January 3rd with the pilot movie "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii", with the rest of Season One to follow in chronological order. The network has been airing promos for the show all week featuring memorable scenes from the show (the snorkel scene, Rick getting hit in the groin in a softball game, and others). NBCUniversal currently broadcasts Cozi TV in all markets served by a station owned by the NBC Owned Television Stations group, which includes New York, Philly, D.C., Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Tuscon, Las Vegas, L.A. and San Diego among others. |
Lance LeGault (1935-2012) 9/14/2012 - Lance LeGault, the deep-voiced, veteran actor who played hard-bitten Col. Buck Greene, passed away on September 10th at the age of 77. Lance played Col. Buck Greene on ten episodes of Magnum P.I., including the fan favorites "Memories Are Forever", "Did You See the Sunrise?", "Little Girl Who" and "Unfinished Business". Lance made many guest starring television appearances over the years, but will probably best be remembered for his role as Col. Roderick Decker in the 1980s television series The A-Team. For more info, check out Lance LeGault's official website. |
Season One and Two re-released in single sided DVD format! 7/17/2012 - Universal Studios Home Entertainment has quietly re-released the official DVD sets for Season One and Season Two. Both are now in the superior single sided format, instead of the error-prone double sided (DVD-18) format. The DVD's are now packaged in a slim, single-sized DVD case (much different from the original bulky Season One case) and now total six DVD's for each set. This is great news for people who have had issues playing double sided DVD's. Unfortunately, the Season One set does not include the Simon & Simon - Magnum P.I. crossover episode "Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend", or any of the other bonus content (i.e. "Echoes of the Mind") that was included in the original Season One DVD set. The list price for both is $26.98. Target has them for $9.99! Seasons Three and Four were also originally released in the double sided format. No word yet on when those might be re-released in the single sided format. |
Magnum P.I. on Netflix 4/17/2012 - Good news for Magnum fans! Seasons One, Two, Three and Six are now available through Netflix's "Watch Instantly" video streaming service (free to Netflix subscribers). Previously, only Season One has been available consistently. According to Netflix's website, all of the first six seasons should be available through their service, but I'm not seeing Season Four and Five on my end at this time. This is not unusual for Netflix, as show and season available are constantly changing due to the nature of the studio contracts. Hopefully the other seasons will be added back in at some point in the future. Anyway, enjoy it while you can! Update: All eight seasons of Magnum P.I. are now available via Netflix! Hooray! |
Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt3/28/2012 - The eighth Jesse Stone television movie, Benefit of the Doubt, is set to air Sunday, May 20th on CBS (9:00PM EST). This installment continues the storyline of 2011's Innocents Lost, with Stone fighting to get his job back as the Paradise police chief while at the same time attempting to solve a mob-related double homicide. Tom Selleck again co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Brandman and again is the executive producer. William Sadler, William Devane, Kathy Baker, Stephen McHattie, Gloria Reuben, Kohl Sudduth (Suitcase), and Joe the Dog all return in their recurring roles. Benefit of the Doubt was filmed last summer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. |
Magnum in the Den of Geek!3/12/2012 - Magnum has been spotted in the den... No, not in Higgins' den, rather the Den of Geek! The UK-based cult television, movies, games and comics site has recently put up a nice little article on our beloved show written by Neil McNally: Looking back at Magnum P.I. ("...the closest thing to a sanitized male fantasy that was ever broadcast on television."). It's well worth the read! Comments can be posted at the end of the article. Thanks guys! |
Fan Creation: The Magnum Lego Project!2/3/2012 - As if we needed more proof that Magnum appeals to all generations. Magnum Mania! forum member Amanda (mandolabar) started watching the show on DVD last September, and her children started getting interested. Her youngest son, Michael, a Lego enthusiast, naturally started to want Magnum P.I Lego sets. Since there are none, he decided to make some—minifigures, plus accessories, of Magnum, Higgins, Rick, and T.C.. The project took on a life of its own—they kept getting ideas for new items to add—but it’s finally finished! Check out the “brochure” and pictures of the sets here. Great job Amanda and Michael! |
Hawaii Five-O DVD set completed!1/20/2012 - CBS DVD (distributed by Paramount) has released the Region 1 DVD set for Hawaii Five-O's twelfth and final season (Hawaii Five-O: The 12th and Final Season), which finishes the official release of the complete series on DVD in Region 1 that started back in March of 2007 (minus the Season Two episode "Bored, She Hung Herself"). Regions 2 and 4 have had the first seven seasons released on DVD so far. Great to see that all twelve seasons have been officially released in Region 1! Hawaii Five-O has a lot of ties to Magnum P.I. (same television "universe", Oahu filming locations, Hawaii Film Studio soundstage, shared sets and props, etc.). The "Big Two" Hawaii-based television shows teamed up to provide an unbroken string of twenty straight years of Hawaiian adventures (1968-1988). McGarrett was mentioned several times in Magnum episodes. It's a shame that Jack Lord never made a guest star appearance on the show (as Zulu, Al Harrington, Kam Fong and Herman Wedemeyer did). Also, be sure to check out the new, re-imagined Hawaii Five-0 Mondays at 10 EST on CBS. Although much different from the original, it's quite good in its own right! |
Larry Manetti interview1/10/2012 - From the better-late-than-never department, John Aberle of WCHE 1520 AM in Philadelphia hosted a great interview with Larry Manetti last year (February). Mr. Aberle is a big fan of Magnum P.I. which comes through clearly in his talk with Larry. The one-hour interview can be found here (Life Unedited with John Aberle). It's well worth the listen! |
Roger E. Mosley on The PM Show with Larry Manetti on CRN!12/11/2011 - Roger E. Mosley was a special guest on The PM Show with Larry Manetti on CRN last week (December 6th). Roger chatted with Larry, Larry's wife Nancy and host Mike Horn about the Magnum P.I. days (including some great stories about the filming of the Christmas episode "Operation: Silent Night"), his special appearance with Larry Manetti on Tom Selleck's Las Vegas television show a couple of years ago, as well as some other interesting anecdotes from his 35+ years in the television and film industry. It was great to see the two of them together again! The show can be viewed in its entirety here. Larry's show airs every Tuesday on CRN1, 4:00 pm PT - 5:00 pm PT. Don't miss it! |
The Merv Griffin Show - Magnum P.I. Cast Interview (1986)!11/3/2011 - Magnum Mania! is proud to announce that we have video footage of the Magnum P.I. cast (Tom, John, Larry, Roger) appearance on The Merv Griffin Show in 1986. The video can be viewed in its entirety here (36 minutes long, no commercials). This long lost footage was discovered on an old VHS tape by Max Schueneman who was kind enough to send it to us. The show was recorded just before the Magnum gang filmed Season Seven's opener "L.A." in Los Angeles. Tom Selleck is interviewed first. He is then joined by John Hillerman, Larry Manetti and Roger E. Mosley who each come out separately as "surprise" guests. For Magnum fans, this is a must see! |
9/20/2011 - Blue Bloods Season Two is set to premiere on Friday, September 23rd at 10 pm EST on CBS. Tom Selleck returns as New York City Police Commissioner (and father of four) Frank Reagan. The series had a successful debut last year, finishing #19 in the overall season rankings with critical praise. This year, veteran producer/writer Ed Zuckerman (of JAG and Law & Order fame) has taken over as showrunner. Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes and Len Cariou are all returning as members of the Irish-American Reagan police family, and you can expect to see New Yorker Nicholas Turturro back as Sgt. Anthony Renzulli. Episodes can be viewed online here. |
8/7/2011 - Higgins' cannon was featured on the August 1st episode of the hit cable show Pawn Stars ("Cannons & Klingons"). The cannon is a genuine 1890's Strong Firearms Co. signal cannon, valued at between $20K-$40K. After the cannon was fired, Rick Harrison made a final offer of $15K, the seller (Rob from The R.H.A. Collection) wouldn't go lower than $35K, so no deal was made. You can watch the entire episode online here. The cannon was seen in three Magnum P.I. episodes - Season Two's "The Last Page" (where it was actually fired), Season Five's "All For One" (also fired) and Season Seven's "Paper War". |
6/15/2011 - Universal Studios Entertainment has released The Best of the 80s: Magnum P.I., a 10-episode, 2-disc standard definition DVD set. The episodes included are as follows: series pilot movie "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii" (2-parter), Season Two's "Memories Are Forever" (2-parter), Season Four's "Home From the Sea", Season Five's "Blind Justice", Season Six's "The Kona Winds", Season Seven's "Limbo", and the series finale "Resolutions" (2-parter). Total running time is 464 minutes. Sorry, no Blu-ray or bonus content! The set has a SRP of $14.98. Amazon has it for $12.49. Despite the glaring omission of "Did You See the Sunrise?", this is a great starter set for the casual fan to get into the show. Universal has released three other "Best of the 80s" DVD sets - Miami Vice, The A-Team and Knight Rider. |
6/1/2011 - Larry Manetti now has his own radio show on CRN Digital Talk Radio (with co-host Mike Horn), the PM Show with Larry Manetti! The first show aired on May 15th, the second one on May 31st and the third one on June 7th. The show airs Sundays 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm PT and Tuesdays 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm PT (on CRN1). In addition to interviewing special guests (Deana Martin, Mike Connors, Carol Burnett to name a few) and telling great stories, Larry also takes calls (1-800-336-2225) and answers emails (lmanetti@crni.net). In the first show Larry stated that a Magnum movie is still a possibility, and that John Hillerman would be willing to come out of retirement to do a "Magnum reunion show"! If you always wanted to ask Larry a Magnum question, now's your chance! Update: Larry Manetti is now on Facebook! Stop by and say hello! |
5/10/2011 - What has Magnum and the Gang been up to after all these years? Well, here's a great story that answers all of these questions. It's a 111-page, 22,000-word movie screenplay called Who Killed Robin Masters?. It was written by The Rev. Dr. David R. Brock, a former Special Forces officer and retired U.S. Army Chaplain. The story is set in modern times and features a cast of characters we've come to know and love through the Magnum P.I. television series. It's extremely well-written and features a thoroughly engaging, exciting plot with lots of action, drama, comedy and mystery. It would make for a fantastic movie! Rev. Brock has been kind enough to share this great screenplay with all of the Magnum P.I. fans out there. Comments can be sent to brockdr@aol.com. |
4/9/2011 - Universal Studios Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing a special 2-DVD "best-of" Magnum P.I. set on June 14th, 2011. The set will feature 10 episodes (464 minutes total) in full-screen video and English mono audio, and will include English subtitles. The suggested retail price is listed at $14.98. The box art has been recycled from the original Complete First Season DVD. The only episodes that have been confirmed so far are the series pilot ("Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii") and the series finale ("Resolutions"). This collection is part of Universal's "Best of the 80s" line, which will also include Knight Rider, The A-Team and Miami Vice. The DVDs can be pre-ordered from Amazon for just over $10! This is a great "starter set" for people who want to check out the show in all its DVD glory, but who couldn't quite pull the trigger for a complete season. |
3/3/2011 - Innocents Lost, the seventh movie in the Jesse Stone series, finally has a CBS air date... Sunday, May 22nd, 9:00PM EST! The plot this time finds Jesse looking into the death of a teenaged girl and unofficially involved in the case of a convicted murderer who he thinks may be innocent. Kathy Baker, Kohl Sudduth, William Devane, Stephen McHattie, Saul Rubinek and William Sadler all return. Like the previous movie in the series, No Remorse, this movie is not based on any of the Robert B. Parker books, rather it is an original screenplay by Tom Selleck and Michael Brandman. Innocents Lost was filmed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the fall of 2009. |
12/11/2010 - Happy 30th Birthday, Magnum P.I.! The Magnum P.I. Pilot debuted thirty years ago today on December 11th, 1980! The show was an immediate hit and went on to air for eight glorious seasons on CBS. It's hard to believe it was thirty years ago! Time sure does fly! Thank you so much Don Bellisario, Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley, Larry Manetti, Reuben Leder, Chas. Floyd Johnson, Chris Abbott (and all the rest) for making one of the greatest television shows of all-time, one that will live in our hearts (and DVD players) forever! The Honolulu Star-Advertiser has a nice article commemorating the milestone. |
12/7/2010 - Magnum Mania! forum member rubber chicken has released version 1.5 of his Guide to Magnum P.I. Filming Locations, an interactive, multimedia map via Google Earth. This update adds 19 new locations, and updates and corrects several others. rubber chicken's KML file now contains over 360 filming locations with over 500 individual "placemarks"! It's a wonderful, extremely well-researched piece of work that makes for a great way to explore and learn about Oahu! Rumor has it there will be another update in the future. Thanks again RC for this fantastic Magnum resource! |
11/11/2010 - In case there was any doubt, Tom Selleck still very much wants to be in the long-rumored Magnum P.I. movie* (if the script is right). Selleck is featured in this week's Parade magazine, where he had this to say about the movie, "Look, I'm not being egotistical, but Magnum's in about 100 countries. They can't just buy a title and stick some younger guy in it. These things are quite real to audiences." In addition to talking about his new show Blue Bloods, Tom also offers up an interesting anecdote regarding his fight scene with his friend Ted Danson in the early Magnum P.I. episode "Don't Say Goodbye". Don't miss the article. It's well worth the read. * Respectfully to "the powers that be", please make this movie with the original cast! It doesn't have to be on the big screen; the small screen is actually preferable. Thank you. |
9/19/2010 - Tom Selleck returns to regular primetime television in the new CBS cop drama Blue Bloods. Blue Bloods revolves around a multi-generational family of New York City cops, headed by Chief of Police Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). The show also stars Donnie Wahlberg (Det. Danny Reagan), Will Estes (Jamie Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan-Boyle), and Len Cariou (Henry Reagan). Blue Bloods will premiere on Friday, September 24th at 10pm EST. Entertainment Weekly named Blue Bloods one of the "5 Best New Shows" of 2010. Also, don't miss the reboot of Hawaii Five-0, September 20th at 10pm EST on CBS! Hawaii's back, baby! |
8/8/2010 - That's right folks, you heard correct. The iconic Mike Post Magnum P.I. theme song is featured in a new television commercial for Maybelline's "The Falsies" Volum' Express mascera (in a slightly modified version)! While it's neat to hear the theme song again in primetime television, I don't think I'm in the minority in thinking that it just doesn't go together well with "beauty products". I mean really, of all the products that the theme song could have been used in, mascera?! |
7/24/2010 - A Tom Selleck-signed, iconic Magnum P.I. red hawaiian "jungle bird" shirt was recently stolen from its display case (during business hours) at the Hard Rock Cafe in Honolulu. That's the bad news. The good news is that it mysteriously wound up at a Pearl City Goodwill store (?) where it was fortuitously identified by an especially observant local (one Daniel Wilson of Honolulu)! Mr. Wilson was even kind enough to return it to the Hard Rock! How or why the stolen shirt ended up at a Goodwill store we may never know. |
6/1/2010 - It was bound to happen sooner or later... A Magnum P.I. tribute beer! Starting in June, SweetWater Brewing Company, a 49,000-barrel microbrewery in Atlanta, is producing a specialty Imperial Pilsner aptly called Magnum I.P.! SweetWater says, "At 100 IBUs and 9% ABV, this hairy chested Imperial Pilsner is guaranteed to rev up the Ferrari and take you on a mustache ride. Medium bodied like Rick and crisp like T.C., this IP's short-shorts on the sea shore fit snug on the 2 lbs. per barrel of Cascade and Sterling hops shimmied upon this sucker." SweetWater beers are found only in the US Southeast (Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina), so this beer will be hard to find for many people. Still, what a great idea! Special thanks to Beernews.org for letting us know about this great new product! |
5/3/2010 - The Magnum P.I. episode of E! True Hollywood Story (from 2001) is now available for viewing on Magnum Mania! (link). This episode has only aired a handful of times and is extremely hard to find. We were fortunate enough to have obtained a VHS cassette copy, which we've dubbed to Flash (commercial free) for your viewing pleasure. This is a pretty good documentary of the show, with lots of rare video footage and photos. Several cast and crew members were interviewed, including Donald P. Bellisario, Larry Manetti, Chris Abbott, J. Rickley Dumm, Kathleen Lloyd, and others. The episode was produced by Andrew Swift and narrated by Kieran Mulroney. |
John Hillerman sighting!4/26/2010 - After almost a decade of near seclusion, John Hillerman (Higgins) surprisingly showed up on a business blog (Mobility Plus Houston - Texas) this month after he came in to get some service work done on a mobility scooter lift for his van. The family-run business posed with him for a great photograph when he came in. This is the first new photograph we've seen of him in many years. At 78, he looks great! He appears to be in good health and enjoying his well-earned retirement in Houston, Texas. :) |
No Remorse set to air May 9th3/19/2010 - No Remorse, the sixth movie in the Jesse Stone series, finally has an air date. It will air on CBS May 9th at 9PM (ET), Mother's Day! As with the previous movies, No Remorse is co-produced and co-written by Tom Selleck and Michael Brandman, and directed by Robert Harmon. Cast members Kathy Baker (Rose Gammon), William Devane (Dr. Dix), Kerri Smith (Sister Mary John), and Kohl Sudduth ("Suitcase") all reprise their roles from the previous movies. |
Aloha Magnum back in print!12/19/2009 - Aloha Magnum: Larry Manetti's Magnum P.I. Memories (1999) is back in limited print (500 copies)! They are exclusively available from Larry Manetti's website for the low price of $25. All books are personally signed by Larry Manetti. This is a great time to buy the book, as used copies of the book usually run for around $80. To promote the re-release of the book, Larry gave a great podcast interview for On Screen & Beyond in late November (where he talked about the book, Frank Sinatra, his time on Magnum P.I., and a possible Magnum P.I. "reunion show" with Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, and Roger E. Mosley), and another one (30 min.) to Blog Talk Radio on December 18th. |
Seventh Jesse Stone movie now filming in Halifax, Nova Scotia10/3/2009 - Variety magazine has reported that principal photography has begun on the seventh Jesse Stone telefilm, Innocents Lost. On location filming began in mid-September in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax has been the primary shooting location for all of the Jesse Stone films. Tom Selleck is again executive producer and co-scriptwriter on the project. Still no word yet on when the sixth installment, No Remorse, will air, but look for a potential "March sweeps" time frame. |
Kwan Hi Lim (1922-2008)9/18/2009 - Sad news to report, longtime Hawaii-based actor Kwan Hi Lim passed away at age 86 back on December 22nd, 2008. We didn't hear about it until recently. Lim played the memorable, quirky Honolulu police lieutenant Yoshi Tanaka in 27 episodes of Magnum P.I. (from 1982 to 1987). He also appeared in 26 episodes of Hawaii Five-O (from 1970 to 1980). In addition to acting, Lim was also a practicing attorney in Oahu, and was later a per diem judge for the Family Court system in Honolulu. R.I.P Kwan! |
Magnum P.I. receives "Hero Award" at the 2009 TV Land Awards show!4/30/2009 - Magnum P.I. was awarded a special "Hero Award" at the 2009 TV Land Awards show. The award "salutes a lead character whose crime-solving feats were astounding, yet remained thoroughly authentic, offering equal parts of street smarts, wit and charisma." The show aired on the TV Land channel on April 26th at 9 p.m. EST. Matthew McConaughey (!) presented the award to Tom Selleck, Roger E. Mosley, and Larry Manetti (John Hillerman did not attend). During the acceptance speech, Selleck recited a poem from Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell who was Killed in Action in Cambodia on March 24, 1970. The entire presentation and acceptance speech can be found here. Roger E. Mosley's red carpet interview can be found here. After the show, Selleck gave an interview with Entertainment Tonight's Leonard Maltin where he reiterated that he would love to do a Magnum P.I. movie if asked, and if the script was right. |
Selleck back on the big screen!4/12/2009 - Tom Selleck is currently filming Killers, a Robert Luketic ("21") action-comedy, in France and Atlanta. Selleck will play the overprotective father of a daughter (Katherine Heigl) whose life becomes endangered when she discovers that her busband (Aston Kutcher) is an ex-hitman. Catherine O'Hara and Martin Mull will also appear in the movie, which is slated for a summer 2010 release. This will be Selleck's first big screen appearance since 1999's The Love Letter. |
Selleck's Thin Ice cools down the competition3/10/2009 - The 5th Jesse Stone movie, Thin Ice, won its time slot on Sunday night with an audience of 15.2 million viewers, and finished #5 for the week. It was the second most watched movie of the series (following the first movie Stone Cold in 2005). One can only hope that this increases the chances of a made-for-tv Magnum P.I. movie being made. Selleck is still clearly a big draw! Next up in the Jesse Stone series is No Remorse, which wrapped up filming in Nova Scotia late last year. Look for a late 2009 air date. |
Thin Ice set to air March 1st on CBS!1/23/2009 - Tom Selleck returns as Paradise (MA) police chief Jesse Stone! Thin Ice, the fifth movie in the Jesse Stone series, will air March 1st, from 9 to 11 PM (ET) on CBS. It is the first of the made-for-television movies not to be based on one of the Robert B. Parker novels. The movie is again directed by Robert Harmon and co-stars Kathy Baker, Leslie Hope, Camryn Manheim, Joanna Miles, and Kerri Smith. Selleck is again one of the executive producers. |
Former Magnum P.I. set decorator launches blog11/8/2008 - Rick Romer, lead MPI set decorator for seasons 4-6, has launched a very interesting blog that documents his experiences working on the show. The blog mainly focuses on set creation and design (with some wonderful behind-the-scenes pictures), but it also offers some very interesting insight on many different aspects of the show. Readers are able to post comments to the blog. If you are a fan, you simply must check this out! |
