Episode Brief
Magnum's luck takes a tumble when he injures his ankle while training for an upcoming charity sports event, and if his foot doesn't heal in time, his place will be taken for the race. But his luck looks set to fall even more when he finds that prostitute Leslie Emery, who he met when he was working as a hotel detective, has now given up working as a call girl and has recently taken a job as a waitress at the King Kamehameha Club, and wants to hire him to help her find her missing sister. Although she is well-meaning, Leslie has proven to cause nothing but problems for Magnum, and sure enough, in next to no time they are up to their necks in chaos, as they uncover that Leslie's missing sister is involved with powerful political figures.

Notes
1 There are several references in this episode to Magnum working as a hotel detective in Season Six's "The Hotel Dick" (6.5). Candy Clark and Phyllis Davis reprise their roles as Waikiki call girls Leslie Emory and Cleo Mitchell from that episode.

2 This episode features a humorous (and rarely seen) brawl at the King Kamehameha Club "Beach Bar". Magnum gets knocked out with one (sucker) punch!

3 The track scenes were filmed at Kaiser High School in Hawaii Kai. (Noted by rubber chicken)

4 For the second episode in the row, Magnum makes a point of telling people to be "direct" with him, to simply "ask" for help rather than "play games".

5 Jonathan Goldsmith (Flynn) will later become famous as "The Most Interesting Man in the World" in the memorable Dos Equis television ad campaigns.

6 A close-up shot of Cleo's "business card" shows her name (Cleo) in large script letters with a small heart just below. Then the card says "your place or mine" and the bottom of the card shows the phone number, which is: (808) 555-6969(!). (Noted by IslandHopper)

7 Magnum says he comes from a long line of "fast healers".

8 The King Kamehameha Club Anuenue Room (or "Rainbow Room") is mentioned by T.C. This is the "party room" that was first seen in Season Four's "I Witness" (4.21). The room will be featured in several more episodes later in the season and in Season Eight.

9 Magnum is seen eating Fig Newtons for the ninth time in the series. (Noted by Timmer33)

10 During a conversation with Higgins, Magnum briefly talks about a previous case, a case not seen in any episode. He says he "unleashed a python" at a Robin Masters dinner party in an apparent attempt to cause a particular woman to faint. It worked.

11 Magnum wears the "Get Wet!" cap for the first time. It's hard to make out, but just below "Get Wet!", in small letters, are the words "Downing Hawaii". Get Wet is the name of a water sports store in Kaneohe and "Downing" is the last name of the owners. Patriarch George Downing was an early pioneer in big wave surfing (and board making) during the late '40s and '50s, and he created/runs the annual Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Memorial surfing event held at Waimea Bay. Son Keone Downing was also a top surfer (and a strong outrigger canoe paddle racer, winning five Molokai to Oahu races in the '80s) and today still designs surfboards and surfing logos. The cap will be seen again in "Death and Taxes" (7.6), "Paper War" (7.8) and "Death of the Flowers" (7.12).

12 Higgins recalls a time on Lizard Island (off the coast of Australia) when a young Kanaka (Polynesian) boy fell down a river embankment, straight into the mouth of a waiting crocodile! After killing the croc with a single well-placed shot, Higgins improvised a poultice for the boy's wounded leg consisting of a mix of local herbs and river-bed clay, which effected a miracle cure. No date given by Higgins. (Noted by Herman)
Quotes
1
Magnum: Now, my plan was to talk to one of the girls, that was the only way we were going to get another clue! Now all that's been accomplished, besides just about getting both of use killed, and setting my ankle back two more days, and breaking Robin's antique walking stick, is that Flynn is going to be looking for her that much harder, and you and I have absolutely nothing to go on.
Leslie Emory: "You and I"? Does that mean you're not quitting on me? You're not, are you?
Magnum: (looks at watch) Your shift starts in half an hour.
Leslie Emory: But ... how am I going to help you?
Magnum: You can't, you mus'nt, and you won't.

2
Magnum: I was looking to get my... rug shampooed.
Woman #1: Well, you've come to the right place.

3
(to Higgins)
Magnum: About the Ferrari...

4
Magnum: What the hell did you do to get so many people mad at you?
Patty Emory: Uh, nothing really... Well, Flynn sent me over to Barnett's place... to deliver the "weekly special", if you know what I mean. Anyway, I found some papers, some correspondence, that would have gotten Barnett in a whole lot of trouble, unless he was willing to pay a small finders fee to recover them.
Magnum: So you're blackmailing Barnett?!
Patty Emory: Well, I kind of like to think of it as a shrewd financial move to set myself up in business: Patty's Palmestry Parlor. I give great readings.
Flubs
1 When Magnum is punched during the beach brawl, it is clear that his left eye was hit, yet afterwards it is his right eye which is bruised. (Noted by Tim)
