Location of the King Kamehameha outdoor bar

#1 Post by mikeaz123 »

Hi All, I've returned from a trip to Oahu recently and started posting pics in another thread. I went to the area where they filmed the outdoor bar scenes for the KKC, and found some conflicting info while there. As you first go to Waihale Beach Park (I think tha'ts what it's called) there's a large park area with palm trees etc, and a public pavilion with benches, for picnics and whatnot. This pic is in the small thumbnail on the On Location page. If you face the ocean and go left down the beach about 500 yards or so, you'll come to a beach that's in front of a hotel I believe (never caught the name) and in front of that is a building with a plaque on it that says its the Magnum Bar. If you stand in front of hte Magnum Bar and face the ocean, off to your right is an "island" that you can walk out to thats surrounded by shrubbery and palm trees etc. However while watching season 8, especially during the Great Hawaiian Adventure Company episode, when they have angles facing the ocean, if you look off to the right of the screen, the small island area with the palm trees is not there, leading me to believe they used the location further down the beach. Anyone have any clue about this?

This is a guess, and only a guess...but maybe it's a man made island and it was built after Magnum ended??? I dunno...just a suggestion! :D Anyone -- please feel free to punch holes in this theory.

Hi Mike,

I misunderstood you before. So the plaque is actually in front of the old Kahala Hilton (today known as the Kahala Hotel & Resort)? This would actually make more sense given the date on the plaque (1983). The patio at the Kahala Hilton was BRIEFLY used as an outdoor KKC setting for a few early Season Five episodes. The KKC "Beach Bar" in Waialae Beach Park (just west of the Kahala Hotel) is a completely seperate setting (beach vs. patio) and is the more commonly seen location.

It's interesting that the plaque is located at the Kahala Hotel location (a location that was only used a half-dozen times) and not the Waialae Beach Park location which was used many, many times. The plaque should really be at Waialae Beach Park.

Regarding the little islets close to shore, those are indeed close to the Kahala Hotel. The different views we get of them in the background (from Waialae Beach Park) are due to the different camera angles. I don't think the "Beach Bar" setting ever changed. In looking at aerial maps of the area, there just isn't any other place to move to outside of the small Waialae Beach Park. Going east, yuo have two buildings, the Waialae Country Club and then the Kahala Hotel, all close to each other.

Google Map of the area

The mysteries of the plaque are now starting to make sense to me. ;)

There is a small island that is seen near the beach bar (one of the supposed locations anyway), and it looks close enough to walk to. It can be seen in several episodes, but we get a good look at the island in "Echoes of the Mind" (Part 1) when Diane first meets Magnum on the beach. Is this the island you are referring to?
The answer is obvious, old man. Logic is irrelevant. It's simply Tropical Madness. (J.Q. Higgins)

Hey there.... I just watched the episode again, and yes that island is off to the right of the Magnum Bar area as seen in the episode (I'm glad we cleared up the mystery! HA ha. ) Here is a photo standing on the lawn in front of the Magnum Bar

If you view the episode, Selleck was probably chilling on one of the rocks in the lower right corner of the photo, possibly out of frame. Another angle from the part of the rocky area you can walk out on

Yep, and here are the "Kahala Islets" as they are often seen from the "Beach Bar" at the Waialae Beach Park:

My apologies for resurrecting an old thread. I've been wondering about the white wire chairs that were used at the King Kamehameha Club. I remember them from the '80s. Turns out, they are Rio armchairs made by EMU: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/473792823288447561/. Might make a nice addition to someone's backyard King Kamehameha Club.

We had some of those chairs back in the day. I remember them being very uncomfortable unless you had cushions in them!

Yeah. Those were everywhere in the 80s. I remember them alway rusting wherever the coating wasn’t perfectly applied.

Same here. I never thought there was anything special about them. However, they're now being called a "design icon" and are apparently a collector's item. I saw a single Emu Rio chair on Craigslist this week. From the photos, it appeared to need new paint. As you mentioned, it had some rust. The single chair was listed for $90. Crazy. But I guess if you're into vintage furniture or just want to recreate the Magnum drinking a cold Coops at the King Kamehameha Club scenes...

And here's two for any Detroit-area Magnum Maniacs: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1036653802 ... la=1&gao=1&

When I was a kid, my parents had some of these in white in the back yard. I recall two things about them. They weren’t so comfortable without a cushion, and they left lines on the back of your legs if you sat in one without a cushion.

Now they’re collectible, who knew?

They also had the rainbow-colored chairs -- anybody know about those?
