Who would you have liked to have seen as a guest star?

For all non-episode specific topics about the show, including MPI-related "tie-ins"

Who would you have liked to have seen as a guest star?

#1 Post by golfmobile »

Since SO many people guest-starred on the show -- and quite a few ASKED to do so, e.g., Carol Burnett and Frank Sinatra -- who would you have liked to see as a guest star and in what kind of plot?

I would have liked to see James Garner as Rockford, over there either on vacation with Rocky or asked out of retirement to chase some investigation over there and runs into Magnum and crew and keeps saying how TSM looks like this guy back home he just hates . . . .

Or Candace Bergin as Murphy Brown on vacation and she crosses paths with TSM while she gets pulled into investigating a story that he is investigating to solve. To me, this could have potential for the BEST Magnum romance -- better than Sharon Stone or Dana Delaney. Sigh . . . . I can just see a scene where it breaks both of their hearts to have to part, but their lives are just too different . . . .

Or Burt Reynolds -- I could see how that one could be hilarious if written correctly!!!

That's just three off the top of my head, but I'm sure others' ideas will inspire me to think of more.

Burt Reynolds would hav ebeen great. I also think it would have been neat to get someone that is a big star now but wasn't back in the day. For example if someone like Tom Hanks had an apperance on Magnum before he hit it big.

I love the Burt Reynolds suggestion as well. The number one box office draw back in the early eighties paired up with the number one Televison Star. Maybe they could have made Burt a Lance White type character. I have always been a Sam Elliott fan as well and think I read somewhere that TS and Sam share the same agent, maybe he could have had a recurring role..........

How about Reynolds as a guest of Robin Masters. Maybe a brief exchange as TM was walking to the tidal pool with the surf ski, and Reynolds returning from swimming in the tidal pool with a knockout female. After, Reynolds (full of himself) is heard telling her how some of his fans even try to look like him.

As written on another post...Peter Falk as Columbo. That would have been great! Can just see Higgins not approving of such a scruffy looking individual.

Personally, I cant see many of todays actors really fitting in with the series but this is just my opinion.

Gotta agree with Golf, great choices all around. James Garner with TS would have been a treat. They could have even created an episode with some of Jimmy's old pals such as Gretchen Corbett, Stuart Margolin (excellent as Angell) and Joe Santos included.

I always thought that TS and James Garner were so simlair in these roles, both had an easy going attitude, both had real world troubles, both were always broke and both lived by the Ocean, plus of course they were both PI's, ooops I mean Private Investigator (Magnum wouldn't like being called a PI).

And yes, totally agree that Candice Bergen would have been pretty good for Tom, except that she comes across as a little crotchety sometimes, bit like Jane Fonda, still much better than Sharon Stone or Dana Delaney.

I was just thinking that ironically. James Garner would have been fantastic.

Loni Anderson. There's gotta be a tidal pool scene in there some where.
The answer is obvious, old man. Logic is irrelevant. It's simply Tropical Madness. (J.Q. Higgins)

Well . . . if we weren't tied to network constraints . . .

It would be funny if one day the pphone lines of Robin and Charlie got crossed and Higgins and Bosley got different bosses leading to a 2-hour crossover when Charlies Angels and Magnum and both working to solve a mystery. An abduction perhaps?

Even better, maybe Charlie gets involved in searching for an abducted Robin and Thomas and Higgins get there panties in a bunch over these three women running the gig. Action, drama and hilarity ensues.

We could also have Thomas on a cross country investigation where clues lead him to cross paths with, starting from West to East:

CHiPs - Thomas and the ferrari getted pulled over by Ponch and Jon. After comic misunderstanding they help him on the way.

Alice - Weary from the road, Thomas pulls over at Mel's Diner for a bite. It's almost a twilight Zone episode. He feels for Higgins and what he does to him.

One Day at a Time - There's got to be a way to get a Valerie Bertinelli sighting. Plus, I'd love to see Thomas give Schnieder that up-down look and gives us that quirky look at the camera like "who IS this guy?"

WKRP - Dr. Johnny fever hiding from "the man" all show thinking Thomas is out to get him. Loni Anderson and Bailey fawn over him in their own ways. Les tries not to be impressed

The road trip ends in NY with a double header of a Taxi cameo and the solution to everything being found in Barney Millers squad room.

Needless to say, Thomas can't wait to get back to Hawai'i after that!!!!

LOL ConchRepublican! That would be unbelievably awesome! :)

My picks would be Madeline Kahn and Jan Michael Vincent, among others.

Madeline Kahn and Jan Michael Vincent

How about Sean Connery?!? He could have been one of Higgins' MI6 chums. He comes out to help protect Higgins against retribution from a past case.

How about John Wayne (had he still been alive of course) as TMs great-uncle and WW1 vet?

How about Barbara Rush appearing a little more often as Aunt Phoebe?

How about Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, and Radar? A Nam reunion of sorts?

What can I say. I like the slightly offbeat, unexpected picks. ;) But yeah, for sure there are many other good choices. All the ones you listed would be great, also!

Still, the great Madeline Kahn as some kind of dazzling, eccentric character with comedic dialog, and maybe even a wild dance number (if that could somehow be worked in), would be my top pick if I had just one choice. Selleck and Kahn together would be just amazing for me.

I think Dirk Benedict would have been a good guest star and he could have had the same slick character as Faceman from the A-Team.

On a side note. He was on a Hawaii Five-O episode in 1968.

I thought about this question for a long time.
You all had great choices.
The person I would have liked to see on Magnum PI is

MYSELF!
actually it was the first thought I had.
