Amy Hill cast as Kumu

#1 Post by Core 4 »

Amy Hill has signed on for a recurring role with a series regular option in Magnum P.I, CBS’ reboot of the classic 1980s show, from Peter Lenkov, Davis Entertainment, CBS TV Studios and Universal TV Studios.

Hill will play the charming and irreverent Kumu, the cultural curator and de facto “house mom” of Robin’s Nest. (Like Doris Duke’s famous Shangri-La mansion near Honolulu, Robin’s Nest employs a cultural curator to preserve and share Hawaiian knowledge.) Whip-smart, she makes sure neither Magnum nor Higgins get away with anything on “her” property. But if they’re ever in need, Kumu is the first person to offer help from herself and her dozens of cousins, “tutus” (aunties) and neighbors all over Oahu. She’s the funny and tart voice of the islands.

Hill currently recurs on Crazy Ex Girlfriend, UnReal, Preacher and Mom. She’s also a regular on Just Add Magic, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. As a voice actor, she’s been heard as recurring or regular voice characters on numerous animated series or films including American Dad, Lilo and Stitch (film and series), King of the Hill and HBO’s Happily Ever After. She’s repped by SMS Talent.

This is new. Kind of like dividing the Higgins character into multiple people? Different aspects of Higgins??

This, to me, just seems like Lenkov/CBS sticking to their nu-MacGyver formula of a four-person team with a quirky female boss. I can't really see the point of the character, but time will tell I suppose.

For me, it looks like the character will mainly be to make you laugh. A comic relief like Kamekona in Hawaii Five-0.

I think it also has to do with cultural sensitivity. Having the new Higgins prattle on about Polynesian cultures is likely something they would like to avoid. I don't mind it-I think it adds an element to the stories and supplies a network of aunties for Magnum, basically a Higgins around every corner. It does make me wonder what the character of Higgins will do though. I really hope they don't get all "teamy" with Magnum like I've heard they did with Mac (I haven't brought myself to watch that travesty yet).

I think it's a given that it will be 'teamy'. I remember reading about an interview with Richard Dean Anderson where he said that, when he was making MacGyver, he was in practically every frame of every scene. His working day was ridiculously long, and I'm sure it must have been the same for Tom Selleck. I think, these days, TV shows try to avoid that by having more of a team, so that the main actor doesn't get burnt out.

I've only seen a few episodes of Nu-Mac and it was all very frantic, lots of running about with shouty dialogue, loud annoying music. I was not impressed.

That's too bad if it is. The show's title isn't "Team Magnum" (makes me think of the Twilight series of movies *shudder*), but named after one, primary character. The original series had shows dedicated to other actors more than the lead, and I'm hoping it goes away from this approach. TV shows also do fewer shoes in a season so I hope I don't hear any whining from actors on how hard they have it.

I didn't mean that. I meant more like "interesting." Eager to see what they do with this development.

This may sound a little odd, but I had to research Amy Hill, as I'm not familiar with who she is. I looked IMDb, and while her list of performances seems impressive, I wouldn't know her from Eve. When looking at her IMDb list, I found that I had only viewed two or three of the television series she made appearances on. I certainly am no judge as to her ability to act, and will have to rely on her on screen reboot performances. My wife often says my tastes are atypical when it comes to my entertainment choices, as I often have no idea as most television or sporting events. I guess if I were wealthy, my tastes would be considered eclectic.
