Robin's Jimmy and TC's helicopter

#1 Post by ConchRepublican »

I don't know if this has been talked about before, I couldn't find it in a quick search, but does anyone else find the similar color schemes of Robin Master's Jimmy and T.C.'s helicopter odd?

It may have been helpful from a theme and psychological standpoint - that there was a consistent look to the show tying things together - but it seems, with time to not make much sense.

Or . . . could there initially have been more they wanted to do with the Robin Masters character? Perhaps he had interest in more than just Thomas Magnum?

Let's see . . . aside from having a former British sergeant-major with extensive military and intelligence experience running his Island estate, from an elite Vietnam unit Robin has:

- brought a former SEAL now private investigator into his home and provided for his room and board
- probably used connections to get a weapons specialist and possibly shady former manager/owner of a definitely shady disco where high stakes drug trafficking was the norm hired as the manager of an upscale private club Robin is a member of and has a big influence in
- could he have assisted in T.C.'s financing of his helicopter and the starting of his own business?

It seems there could have been a lot more to Mr. Masters than meets the eye . . .

I like this idea! I think this would make a great movie concept, discovering what really brought them all together or at least some excellent fanfiction.

Amusing theory but the chopper paint scheme was a stock one offered by Hughes.

Though perhaps Robin owned Hughes?

It's a cool idea- but at least Robin could have made everything red or black or something. Not 'autumn rainbow'.

McDonnell Douglas bought it in the early 80s I think.

... but perhaps Robin Masters and Howard Hughes were friends?
You could imagine Masters using Hughes life as source material for his tawdry novels.

On the 500D paint scheme, are we certain that it was a standard one offered by Hughes? If you buy a 500 series these days the option is 'One color paint'... but perhaps McDonnell Douglas just aren't as bad-ass.

I'm thinking it was just meant to be a kind of cool Magnum package. Unique vehicles were such a big thing for TV shows and movies back then (note the recent post about the Hot Wheels collection. I guess what would have helped is if there were a character who "belonged" to the Jimmy. Maybe Kenji could have had a higher profile role!

Naw...there's just not much worth watching on anymore!

I suppose there are a few "good" shows on nowadays. I think a few of them have been mentioned in the "Other TV Shows" thread.

But we REALLY liked the Magnuverse and some of us are still stuck in the 60's!!!...so a show from the 80's...well that's the newstuff! :D

Gettin' ready to watch season 8 again with the wife, she's not seen it before...this should be interesting!

You could imagine Higgins and Kenji, back to back doing their karate to ward off the bad guys. HEEEE-YAAAA!
Golly... that could have been a hilarious spin off. The Majordomo In which Higgins delves into the Japanese underworld of the Hawaiian Islands with loyal gardener and martial arts expert in tow...

Or do Magnum PI through the eyes of Kenji. Like every episode is a diary entry.

For instance "40 Years From Sand Island":

" Today Mr. Higgins walked toward the guest house with a scimitar and Im not sure why. Later, I stopped by to ask Mr. Magnum to help me move some plants, and I found him hiding in a closet. Later that day, Mr. Higgins was put int the hospital. I wonder if there was some connection?"

J. Digger Doyle:

"A few days ago, Mr. Magnum brought a woman over. Mr. Higgins disappeared and all anyone will tell me is that she is in charge now. Today I came into work and I found Mr. Wright involved in a shoot out with some electric company workers, and I saw Mr. Calvin land on the estate even thigh he is not supposed to. How am I going to explain to the insurance company about the bullet holes in my pickup? Perhaps I'll ask Mr. Calvin, as he's always leaving here muttering about bullet holes"

Doc . . . I believe you're onto something.

"Kenji's Blog" . . . unfortunately I then hear William Shatner's voice leading off with a Star Date!
