Just got back from an Estate visit

Well I just got back from Oahu on holiday and got a good view of what the Estate is looking like lately. It looks pretty much the same as what recent photos show.

There was a tarp hanging over the balcony so we couldn't see much of that but perhaps they are refurbishing. The grassy bit below the balcony where Higgins had his umbrella lawn chair set was not quite viewable as the shrubs have grown quite high over the small wall.

The tennis court and Guest House are still in quite a bit of disrepair. There seems to be a bit of landscaping maintenance on the lawn which seems promising but a lot of shrubs around the main house are quite overgrown. The wired fence and gate from the tidal pool is still really rusted but most likely the original. There was a badminton net set up on the lawn next to the beach! This is good as it implies there is actually people visiting the Estate other than Ms Anderson living like a hermit.

There was nobody at the tidal pool both weeks we visited so it was really cool to go swimming and hangout on the wall where TM would sit. Very cool!

I'll be posting photos soon...perhaps at the weekend.

The access at the tidal pool is easy ? No problems to get there ?

Ya the tidal pool and other connecting beaches is open to the public. The Kaiona Beach Park is a about 120 metres/yards from the tidal pool which has a small car park.

It's a great spot 'cause no one really goes there weekdays at the beach park and you won't find many people at all at the tidal pool if any. The first day there was no one and the second time a lady with her kid was it. It's really shallow - up to your chest at the most up till the reef bit. Bit of small rocks throughout but it's great to wade in. I think only Mag fans would really appreciate it, and certainly a sensory overload when you're there.

"Sensory overload" certainly describes how I felt when I was there last April. I was trying to snap pictures and soak up the essence of the Estate all the while my wife was shaking her head wondering when I was going to be done when this "Magnum nonsense" (the nerve!). Thanks to the internet, it is easy to find and the funny thing is, the last time I was in Hawaii was in 1987 and I probably drove right past The Anderson Estate at least four times, not knowing it was Robin's Nest. Heck, they were probably even filming when I drove by as there was a second unit fiming on Waikiki when I was there. Unfortuantely, I also saw the tarps hanging over the balcony as you did. WOW! Great pictures! Though it must have been low tide. The square rock isn't usually in that shallow water in most of the MPI episodes, if I recall correctly.

Still, nice that it was so deserted while you were there. We've been to Hawaii five times in the last five years but never stayed on Oahu (Kauai twice, Maui once, Big Island twice).

I just wish Mrs. Anderson would open up the estate grounds to MPI fans for an admission price (which would cover wear and tear and maybe even allow her to maintain the place a little better). I think it would be a money-maker (if not a cash cow!) if she would fix up the boat house to look like Magnum's apartment. Wouldn't we all enjoy seeing it, even if all we could do was stop in the upstairs foyer and look down at it, rather like the roped off areas in historic houses (e.g., the House of Seven Gables in Salem). I swear, I think I'd pay a $50 admission charge to be able to walk the grounds and the beach and see "Magnum's apartment."

I guess she's tired of the "madding crowd" and avid fans, but she could make some money on it, IMHO. Maybe she doesn't need the money, but she could sell it to someone who could develop it.

But then maybe no one wants a "Magnum Theme Park" right there. Sigh . . . .

My sister-in-law and niece were also bored sitting on that grassy bit by the car park while my brother and I soaked up the Magnum experience. I could have stayed there all day.

Wow that tarp has been up for awhile then. Those shots with the tide look pretty much exactly the same as when I was there last week. Damn, I didn't sit on the rock thing though! Does anyone know what that thing was used for?

You know, I'd help her do landscaping for free to have access to the Estate. If Ms Anderson only knew just how many people would actually do that for free she'd be amazed.

I have a feeling that square rock was used in "No Need To Know", when Mandy goes swimming at nighttime, shortly before she's shot at by the intruder. Perhaps I'm wrong but I'm sure she was sitting on a large rock.

You guys are so lucky to have been able to visit the actual house. For me it's a dream away, one day it may come true though.

I always pictured the concrete square as a place for turtles to hide from predators and/or get out of the sun back when the tidal pool was used for raising turtles. But thats just my guess based on nothing really. Or it could have been used as a workbench for workers to measure the turtles or tag them or something...

It would be great to read in depth about the history of the tidal pool and the operation that went on there.

And I'll probably never go to Hawaii but I always enjoy seeing other peoples pictures and hearing of their experience, thanks Ice Pick!

Wow! I'm so excited to have found other MPI fans. I Don't spend too much time on the web. I went to the Estate last year and got just the same reaction from my wife, she just shook her head, smiled and said, "go on" while she waited at the park. I too could have spent all day there. Of all the times I knowingly drove by the Estate, I never fathomed walking to the tidal pool. When I got back to the park my wife said I looked like a kid that just walked out of Disneyland for the first time. I'll be going back. I look forward to talking with you guys.

You're not alone my friend. My wife will do the same thing, only she won't be smiling I suspect! I will try my best to get her in that tidal pool for a "Snorkel Shot", but it probably ain't gonna happen!

I wonder how many husbands have tried to do that at the Estate over the years? Hundreds? Thousands, maybe? I wonder how many wives have actually given in and done it? Hehe!

Gosh, hope i will have to chance to.. just visiting the estate.. but i'm 15 know.. i live in the Netherlands so it's a expensive trip.. maybe when i'm 18 i will go there, but i have no idea how many it's going to cost me.

Jeffery, when you do go to Oahu, try and seek out hostels or inexpensive hotels. Try looking online with a travel company. You can visit on a budget. Good luck my friend.
