Runaway
I always thought this was an unappreciated movie and that Selleck, as well as Gene Simmons and Kirstie Alley, did a good job with it. Little did I know that the movie was written by Michael Crichton! I was doing a little side research and came across this.
I think Crichton's touch, his take on technology, the future and man's responsibility with it all is what added the dimension to the movie I liked. The future on this movie seemed believeable. I think that's probably why it wasn't a bigger hit, it wasn't over the top enough.

I agree, Conch......If it were made now the little erector set toys running around would be CG and perhaps more sinister looking. You gotta admit they were a bit funny running around but I do like the story and the actors in the film...........I still have to admit to my guilty pleasure Tom Selleck Movie; Folks....Lord help me.........LOL

I liked this movie too. It really shows how good TS is at comedy. That combined with the fact that Ted Kotcheff (Weekend at Bernie's) directed this, make it a winner in my book! The only thing I don't like about it is TS really needs to have a mustache in this.I still have to admit to my guilty pleasure Tom Selleck Movie; Folks....Lord help me.........LOL

I saw yesterday the movie, for the first time on dvd (I choose the English track
)
I hadn't seen it for several years.
Widescreen format, good audio/video quality for a 1984 movie.
Too bad the only bonus material is a couple of trailers (The 6th Day and another little jewel of SF, John Carpenter's Starman). Not even the movie trailer. Some extras related to the movie would have been highly appreciated!
Well, I think it is still an enjoyable movie!
It sure has that 80s look, but I like 80s!
Movies were more "craft" in those days before the invasion of CGI, more based on the story and characters.
The late Michael Crichton gave a decent performance as a director, I think.
TS is good as always, even in more dramatic roles like this.
Gene Simmons is a true s.o.b. with those maniac eyes, and Kirstie Alley was pretty hot in her short role.
One of the thing that I've always liked is Jerry Goldsmith's score (listen at the opening credits track, very cool!).
But here comes the MAIN reason to watch this movie.
As I recalled, Cynthia Rhodes was absolutely brilliant and gave the best acting performance in the show, imho.
She has that sweet but sad look in her eyes, seems a very sensitive, tender woman.
And, needless to say, she is GORGEOUS!
Here I have to quote myself:

I really enjoyed this movie. I love Selleck, Crichton (R.I.P.), and Alley (Lt. Savvik from Wrath of Khan, or course!) so I enjoyed this movie greatly. Being a teenager used to Ipods and Super advenced, star trek-like robots, I at first found the robots laughable. I'll tell you though, after the scene where Ramsay goes i for that kid, the bots scared me plenty. Shows how great Crichton was at tehcno-suspense.
Someone should do to runaway what they did to STAR TREK: The Motion Picture: Replace some of the old robots and computer screens with updated stuff. But that might ruin that "Blade Runner-like" 80's sci-fi feel to it though to i don't know.

If it was a complete remake, I'd say an actor like Robert Downey Jr would work for Ramsay. Also they need to take out or alter the last scene. you know the one I speak of:
"I'm Tom Selleck. I'm going to kiss Cynthis Rhodes for 20 minutes even though:
a). Theres a lot of dangerous acid on my face
b). there are sparks raining down all over us. I'm Tom Selleck, so I'm invunerable, but Ms. Rhodes may catch on fire.
c). That guy from KISS is just layin there dead. It looks like he's looking at us and it creeps me out.
d). My kid is in the car across the street just waiting there, even though there might be some spider-bots that haven't been found. Hope Magnum Jr. has a bug bomb.
And just for fun, I'm going to touch Ms. Rhodes nose with my possibly acid-covered fingers at random intervals for no apparent reason. roll credits!"
Like I said, that needs to go. other than that, remake would be great!

Ah I see. you sound like my mother! (Not meant badly in any way; she loves Tom Selleck!
)Being a male I sometimes forget the sex appeal of Tom Selleck. With us guys I think our fantasy is being Tom Selleck. As a result kids wonder why I wear flashy hawaiian shirts and laugh in a high pitched way.
If they were doing a remake they could still have the scene in, just maybe make it a little shorter. but I'd much rather just have an updated version of the original. Actually, right now I wanna hop onto Maya or Blender and just re-do the effects myself.
