It is a really great picture, just beautiful!

Again, it's just astonishing what the members of the forum manage to find that is Magnum related. :o :o
Higgins: You've washed the car?! How extraordinary. Why would you do such a thing?

In this case, the artist actually emailed me about it. ;)

Just lovely! Wonder if he also sells prints of his paintings, as a lot of artists do?

Very nice. That would go great in a beach house.

More Hawaii Five-O screen shots here. I was surprised to find that the last post in this thread was way back on July 10th, but I think it's best that these posts stay in the same thread.

These pictures are from While You're At It, Bring In The Moon, season 4 episode 19, airing February 8, 1972. In this episode the estate is used for two scenes (32:45 to 33:47 & 43:08 to 50:01), and is owned by a Mr. Byers, who is one of four suspects in the murder of a business associate.

Following are some of the highlights, the whole set can be downloaded here (2.5 MB .zip file). Some captures have been brightened / sharpened / resized for this post.

Inside the entryway of the main house - about all that's seen of this area.
Image

Side of the main house - a unique camera angle that may not have been used in Magnum P.I. (?) In the distance the cement "slab" water distribution box in the tidal pool is just under the water, and I believe the object in the water to it's right is a small rowboat. Also notice the pier / dock (seen in this post) is now gone.
Image

From the seating area seen above - this is still pre-tennis court.
Image

A nice pan of the side yard.
Image

From the seating area again - notice the Shriners Beach Club stairs. Sometime before the start of Magnum P.I. these stairs were taken out and new stairs were built, with the lowest stair starting flush with the sea wall and going directly up into the property (towards the road). The camera is zooming in here, so included in the .zip file are similar shots closer and further away.
Image

And the seldom seen seaward side of the high seawall east of the main house (to the right of the seating area in the second picture above).
Image

This isn't related to the estate, but it's interesting and a bit sad (to me at least) that the main house property used in this show, located here, no longer exists. This was just two properties to the southeast of one of the homes used for the residence of Ice Pick in Magnum P.I. It seems that the land was left unused for some years, and I believe the property has been divided into three parcels and has had new homes built on those since the google maps photo was taken.

I'll be doing the next Hawaii Five-O episode soon.

Also, I noticed two Hawaii Five-O regulars who were in this episode later appeared on Magnum P.I.

Actor Harry Endo, who appeared in over 100 Hawaii Five-O episodes as forensic specialist Che Fong, was in three Magnum P.I. episodes.

From left to right in the pictures below, we have Harry Endo as...

Che Fong in Hawaii Five-O's While You're At It, Bring In The Moon (4.19) - 1972
Mr. Matsuda in Ms. Jones (5.19) - 1985
Desk Clerk in the Magnum P.I. / Murder, She Wrote crossover episode Magnum on Ice (MSW 3.8, conclusion to M.P.I.'s Novel Connection (7.9) - 1986
Judge Homer Haruda in Unfinished Business (8.8) - 1988
Image

Actor Herman Wedemeyer, who appeared in over 130 Hawaii Five-O episodes as Honolulu Police Officer Duke Lukela, was in one episode of Magnum P.I.

Edward D. 'Duke' Lukela in Hawaii Five-O's While You're At It, Bring In The Moon (4.19) - 1972
Coroner in The Curse of the King Kamehameha Club (1.11) - 1981

I caught the last 15 minutes of the HFO episode The Second Shot this past Saturday on our local retro station, and The Anderson Estate was used again.
I'm not sure how much it was used in the entire episode, but it was certainly prominent in the last part of the show........

Great screen caps rubber chicken! Thank you so much. Love that one elevated shot from the ocean side of the main house. Very cool. So, the Shriners pier (did we determine that it belonged to Shriners?) must have been taken down sometime between late 1969 (when we last saw it in "Forty Feet High and It Kills!") and early 1972.

Nice to see a young-ish Ed Flanders (Dr. Westphall on St. Elsewhere) in the one pic. Ed apparently appeared in 7 HFO episodes!

In looking at the episode IMDB credits, I see that yet another MPI alum (and well-known Oahu local) can be found - Fred Ball! Fred appeared in 3 MPI episodes (including the pilot) and played the character of "Professor Fun" on the long-running Hawaii children's show The Checkers & Pogo Show.
Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!

Hi James and RC,
It's late so I'll start a thread tomorrow but many of the local actors and those under contract appeared in HFO and MPI.Even Hillerman was in two episodes of HFO.

Steve - if you missed it, here's my post for The Second Shot (3.3).

James - The pier did indeed belong to the Shriners Beach Club. I have aerial photographs showing it starting at the Shriners wall, dead center of their property line. It met with the wall here and went out to sea, built atop the turtle wall. (I used wikimapia for the helpful center marker.) I put together a time lapse video of historical aerial photos of the estate area. I'll have to post it sometime, it will blow your mind! The effect is not unlike seeing someone grow old in photographs.

St. Elsewhere is a show I didn't see too much of, thanks for pointing that out. I guess it's probably clear, but he was Mr. Byers, the owner of the estate. Hmm, wait a minute though. Higgins came to the estate in 1972, the same year this show was made. And he replaced Lowell Xavier Jamison who was the majordomo before him. Something's not right here... Although this Mr. Byers had to leave early in the year, February in fact. So there's still time for Robin Masters to buy the estate, hire and then fire Lowell Xavier Jamison, and then bring on Higgins to begin his tenure. Everything is right with the world! Although I foresee problems arising with future Hawaii Five-O episodes.

I'd get a screen shot of Fred Ball, but I can't think of who Garland would be in this episode. A reporter or tough guy maybe?

Sam - I'd enjoy seeing that thread, I don't think I knew Hillerman had been in Hawaii Five-O. Checking now I see he was on in 1976 and 1978 - I'll have to see those episodes when they come out.

I have been ovet there twice, first time in November of 1987 and I recall seeing a few places on The Island with 308's or 328's with "Rent Me" signs in the window. They were even listed in some of the tourist pamphlets back then and I had called about renting one...........Now get this, if I remember correctly, the rental price was only $199.00/day, but you had to put a $2,800.00 hold on your credit card for insurance purpose. In those days, I had only one credit card with a limit to cover that, but I was using it on the trip so alas, I rented a jeep. My last trip in April of 2007, I didn't see any of the old Ferrari's for rent, but I didn't do a lot of research into it either as I wanted to rent a motorcycle that trip.....

You guys do a great job on this. It is great to see other pictures of the estate and even some inside pictures from the Five-O series.

I found a intresting article. It interviews Donald P. Bellesario, and he tells about some stuff related to the set of the estate.
BELLISARIO: Well, as I said, filming as much as possible at locations that could have been used in a 30’s or 40’s period film. For example, when filming the pilot, we couldn’t find a location that fit my image of “Robin Masters’” estate, so we created one from a number of locations. The gate was one place, the driveway somewhere else. The guesthouse was unfortunately positioned where it would have been in the middle of what was to be the front of the estate. For the next eight years that guesthouse was never filmed in the same frame with the main house. It was photographically positioned through a portico that led to the rear of the mansion. Through such highly restrictive filming, we also never showed the properties actually abutting “Robin Masters’” estate, and were able to create the illusion of an expansive ocean front property. Tourists visiting the location were stunned to discover that the fabulous “Robin Masters” estate was actually a small property sandwiched between a Lion’s Club and another house.

I told him that was ridiculous."

At the risk of getting too geeky, Bellisario is being generally, but perfectly accurate...

For the next eight years that guesthouse was never filmed in the same frame with the main house.
It was actually, but off in the distance, behind the tennis courts and trees. Probably not obvious.
Through such highly restrictive filming, we also never showed the properties actually abutting “Robin Masters’” estate...
There were a few times when the Shriners Beach Club (not Lions Club) was seen from the "guest house" porch, as well as probably some beach shots that showed neighboring properties.

Thanks for the link Jeffrey!
