We've found Hanauma Bay to be great in the morning. It was easy to get there by 7:00 am (the park opens at 6:00 am ) since we were operating on west coast time. Parking was wide open and the beach and bay were not at all crowded.

Check the tides before you go. It can be a bit dicey at low tide. One of my daughters lost a bit of skin on the reef.

Enjoy your trip! We are shooting for a mid August trip, after daughter number two finishes up the USMLE Step 2. She wanted to do a MPI themed vacation to celebrate. :) :)

Great idea Icepick.

I do spontaneous missions like the one you're contemplating too.
What a good idea -- to call this a "mission."
I can't go on "missions" anymore. My friend, T.C., makes fun of me.

I have to call them "cases" now. :D

Wish I could go to O'ahu.

Yeah, I am too. But if the truth be told, I really wouldn't feel comfortable flying right now because I'm too dependent on the under-the-tongue nitro pills. I only live 3 miles from the nearest hospital, so I take some comfort in that fact! :D

SL....special healing thoughts are sent to you to get well soon.

A Magnum Mania meet sounds great as it would be a meeting of people of like minds. Please make it for February as this is when we escape our Canadian winter and head to paradise!

If anyone heads for Hanauma Bay, indeed make sure you go really early as the beach gets very crowded, and its very hot. Before being allowed on the beach, it is compulsory to view a short conservation film, showing what you must and must not do while in this area. Line ups can be long.

For those who love shrimp and prawns, when going to the north of the island, keep a look out for Giovanni's white truck, parked on the side of the road, as totally awesome shrimp and prawns are sold here. Further along the road there is another place, and you can also view the shimp ponds. Before going to any of the Hawaiian Islands, I would really recommend buying Oahu Revealed (Maui Revealed etc. etc.), since these books tell you about out of the way places, maps etc. Well worth buying!

Aloha!

MPS,

Thanks for the info that Hanauma Bay is more accessible in the morning. We too are very early risers when we are there (again, still on Atlanta time), so we're usually up, out, and about by 7 a.m. Of course, the FIRST morning there, I hope to do the helicopter flight. But Friday morning is a definite Hanauma "mission." (Sorry, Sammy, still a "mission" in my mind --nothing to solve, as with a case, just something to "do," as in a mission :) ) Also, MPS, since I can't swim, I have to go in the water with a boogie board or half-size air mattress, so I can usually float over the rocks/reef, even in low tide. Larry may have a bit of a problem, but I'll warn him and we'll check for tides. Need to be aware of that with the trip to the tidal pool too. Thanks for the heads-up about that.

I'm just starting to get worried about hearing from the heli company . . . . no chopper, no trip.

SL, still going to miss you . . . .

golf

P.S. Lily, yes, I have the "Revealed" books for Kauai and the Big Island, but since this is such a short trip, if we go, this time, we won't have a lot of time to find all the "Revealed" hidden places. However, I might try to find the book on eBay for the potential September trip. But if we do get to the North Shore this time to try to snorkel at Shark's Cove as Steve mentioned, I'll make note to look for the white trucks to buy shrimp and prawns. Hopefully we'll have a kitchen where we're staying so that'll make for one nice dinner when we get back to our hotel/condo. Thanks for another hint!

I hope everyone is taking notes! It's SO nice to have so many people offering suggestions and special hints. I think you're creating an "Oahu Revealed Especially For Magnum P.I. Fans"!!! (and remember to print off and take with you the "locations" listing on this site! I've printed it!)

Hey all,

I'm wondering....

What if we did something that would be a nice convention of sorts, but might be a little more in the price range of our members so that we could get the biggest turnout - like a Vegas trip?

Although its not Magnum in scope (moreso "Cooper"), but I have a feeling we could all afford it a bit more, especially with the escalating costs in fuel (read jet fuel).

I'm sure that fight costs and accomodations would be a bit more acceptable to most of us, and the fact that a "Magnum Mania" shindig HAPPENED would be more important than a get-together in Hawaii.

Not the perfect solution, but maybe something of a middling ground would allow for this to actually get off the ground.

(Granted, a nice tour of Oahu and all the Magnum sights would be perfect, but I would be completely satisfied to meet y'all in person, even if it wasn't in Hawaii)

Thoughts?

I think it's a wonderful idea Doc, since it only takes 45 minutes to fly to Vegas from where I am! Since I haven't been to Vegas since my first trip in 1974 (I think) I'd sure like to go there again, plus it's way more affordable for those that can't afford airfare to Hawaii.

Count me in! :D

I was in Vegas, for business, a couple of weeks ago and started looking at hotel prices when I got home. They major hotels seem to be lowering weekend rates, even more than the normal summer rates, in an attempt to get the crowd that drives up from LA to keep doing it. Gas prices are eliminating many of the spontaneous trips.

Weather-wise, a spring or fall Magnum-Mania get together might be a little more pleasant than summer. :)

Sounds like great fun!!

Vegas.....Did someone mention Vegas? Count me in, I used to go two or three times a year, but haven't been in over three years now, so I am over due. I found Vegas turning into a club culture, Paris Hilton/Lindsey Lohan wannabe town and had to bail out, but meeting all of you would certainly coax me back.
By the way Golf, I checked Orbitz last week when I came up with those prices and think they were high due to the short notice, I do like the site you mentioned. Have a GREAT time, and make sure you and your husband get a beloved snorkel shot in the Tidal Pool........

Golf,

Our last trip we paid $375 for the two of us for the 60 minute circle tour.I was curious to see who is charging $325 each and found this on the Heli USA web page.

Heli USA Airways has temporarily suspended helicopter sightseeing tours of Oahu whilst we relocate to our new maintenance facility.

We anticipate that tours will restart in the Fall of 2008. If you plan on traveling to Oahu from September 2008 onwards, please contact our Reservations Dept for an update on when tours will restart. Thank you for your patience.

Edit.
The reason I mention it is because my recollection there was only one service from Honolulu. We departed from just across the runway of HNL.

I did find a 60 minute circle tour from Turtle Bay for $196.

Sam,

The $325 each amount was based on an "instructor" flight with Mauna Loa Helicopters. That is the company I flew with the two times I went up in a Robinson 22 on the Big Island. Because of my trying to fly a helicopter in flight simulation, I wanted to try to fly a real helicopter, and MLH lets the "student pilot" fly the helicopter -- well, sort of. The instructor pilot does the take-offs and landings, of course, but once you are up in the air, he will turn the controls over to you, if you can handle it. I did miserably the first time I tried, but the second time, I flew the helicopter for about 30 minutes "by myself." He has the throttle set but I was in control of the stick and the pedals. The pilot, who was this really CUTE young guy, so sweet, said I did really well maintaining a constant altitude while we were flying (which seems to be a big deal, I didn't have a problem with that). (I could never really take a complete helicopter licensing course because my vision is too bad -- no depth perception -- makes landings difficult, ya know? I could never pass the vision test to get a real license, even if I could afford the $35,000 cost.)

Anyway, with just the two people in a Robinson 22 (which holds only two), it's like $315-25 an hour (don't know if fuel prices have affected their rates), BUT if we rent the Robinson 44, which can carry five people (two front, three rear) so Larry can come along, we both have to pay the roughly $300/hour rate. And I think a lot of that higher cost is because the "co-pilot"/passenger is also allowed to try to fly the heli. This is really like a personal charter of the aircraft. The smaller heli is for just one, so it's cheaper. If a second person comes along on the charter on a larger aircraft, you pay double the amount. The regular tourist helicopters don't have dual controls so a passenger can't take over (and insurance might have something to do with this too). Plus the cost of an instructor pilot might be higher than just a pilot to fly the aircraft.

So - and I add ANOTHER anyway -- as it turns out, WE AREN'T GOING. Bummer. I haven't gotten any responses to my emails to MLH, and from what I can tell on the internet (Larry said they may be out of business because of fuel prices), it seems that, where they used to allow "fly your own helicopter" on the Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai, it seems they now do that only on Kauai. Check here and go down to the third option "Ultimate Instructional Tour" -- this option seems to no longer exist on Oahu and the Big Island. Their flight schools at Kona and Oahu may still operate -- Flight Schools -- but it seems they don't do the tourist thing there. Now because they "know" me, and Drew, my instructor from the Big Island last October is now on Oahu, they might have made an exception for me -- but since my email was not answered, I don't want to press the issue. I'll just wait and see if we can do it in September when it's not a "rush" mission.

So we're going to St. Croix, where, some of you may recall, Magnum GI went in March when we went to St. Thomas. I found a deal that is for the three days we will be there, accommodations at a beach-side resort, rental car for three days, and golf at the two courses there for a total of $644 (not per person but total). We figured accommodations (at a decent place) and rental car by themselves would run close to $600, so to have two days of golf at great courses included . . . we can snorkel in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Okay, so no Robin's Nest, but we can do a snorkel shot -- it just won't have Rabbit Island in the background (maybe St. Thomas . . . .)

So we're on "Mission Beach Breach" -- just not in Hawaii. I still hold out hope for September . . . .

So sorry you aren't going to be going to Oahu, Golf, but your backup plan sounds great and there sure isn't anything wrong with the Caribbean now is there! By the way, I think I may have mentioned last year on Mganum, G.I.'s St. Thomas trip that my wife and I were married on a beach there. Have a great time...........
