Any Magnum P.I. novels

#1 Post by SignGuyHPW »

Lots of TV shows and movies had a series of novels that would spit out new stories involving the characters from the screen version. Were there ever any books written about Magnum P.I.?

I always thought it would be cool to recreate some of Robbin Masters novels, or at least the book covers.

Great idea about recreating Robin Masters' novels! Did we ever get to see a Robin Masters' book cover in the show?

Hi BWheelz54,

Go to the Home Page of M.M. and click on LISTS (at the top) and you'll find The Novels of Robin Masters .

Enjoy!

The cover seems to imply that it was written before the show was aired?? I'd be interested to know what its like.

Okay, the topic caught my interest and I couldn't help researching a little further after commenting. I had trouble finding any reference to novels on the site, which surprised me because James is so thorough. I did finally find reference to the first Magnum novel and the Maui Mystery! novel on the Tie-in Products page.

There's very little info about the content of both books to be found, but after reading a bit on some ]German and French sites it seems that the first one - written by Roger Bowdler and published in 1981 - is a novelization of Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii. I found that a version was published in German and French also ("Kein Schnee auf Hawaii" and "Magnum, pas de neige a hawaii," respectively). Other languages?

The Maui Mystery! book by William Rotsler (published in October 1983) is something of a collectible, it would seem judging by the prices. Wow! It seems to be one of those choose-your-own-adventure stories ("Plot it yourself") marketed to young teens. One description of it reads: "A private investigator from Oahu goes to Maui to help a beautiful friend who thinks someone is trying to kill her. The reader may choose the way the plot develops."

The last one I found is also by Bowdler (published in 1984), but I only seem to be able to find reference to it in German. "Magnum - Sturm über Honolulu" (Storm Over Honolulu) is a novelization of the J. "Digger" Doyle episode. More on this and the first novel in German can be found (in German) on this site: http://www.tomselleck.de/magnum-p-i/magnum-romane/

I suspect this is not the whole picture. Surely Bowdler wrote the 1984 novel in English first, so there must be a version out there. Maybe there are others?

Interestingly, before the Magnum book, Bowdler wrote the novelization of a British TV show called "Robin's Nest!"

He also did a novel for the show Hart to Hart.

Hey Styles,

The Robin's Nest you refer to was a spin off of Man About the House. Both were British shows. The wildly successful American show Three's Company was based on Man About the House. When Three's Company came to an end they tried to spin it off also, but were unsuccessful with Three's a Crowd.

...and thanks for the info!

Well done Styles!

Look forward to hearing what Lar has to say when his book arrives.
The other one has a rather inflated price so it might remain a mystery unless one of us finds it a used book store for a $1.

I'm certain they are out there. I read a few forums and I guy was writing that he was looking to buy one for five bucks, but wasn't sure it was worth it. That was ten years ago, however.
