‘Magnum P.I.,’ ‘77 Sunset Strip’ Producer Joel Rogosin Dies Of Coronavirus -

Veteran writer-producer Joel Rogosin, who was nominated for three Prime time Emmys in a TV career that spanned more than 30 years, has died. He was 87.
He produced 77 Sunset Strip, The Virginian and Magnum PI as well as 20 other series and was considered among the best in Hollywood at that craft.
Rogosin was a pioneer member of the Grey Quill Society, and wrote a memorable poem about death for it titled "Stardust":

“Someday we’ll be a speck of stardust, maybe in a far-off galaxy millions of years old, and a child will awaken, maybe in the cold, and reaching for a rumpled blanket or a tattered bear, look out a window at the sky and see us sparkle there, and wonder why so many specks of stardust.”

Vintage Los Angeles: What Ever Happened to Dino's Lounge? - LAmag

In the summer of 1958, Dean Martin and his business partner, Maury Samuels, bought a former restaurant called The Alpine Lodge and renamed it Dino's Lodge. Here's what happened after that -

Remember the L.A.-based private eye series 77 Sunset Strip? The 1950s show was filmed entirely on the Warner Brothers lot, but the opening 30-second sequence was filmed in front of Dino's Lodge,
located at 8524 Sunset Boulevard.
In the summer of 1958, Dean Martin and his business partner, Maury Samuels, bought a former restaurant called The Alpine Lodge.
They hired Dean’s brother, Bill, to manage the place, and immediately renamed it Dino’s Lodge.
Out front they placed an enormous neon sign featuring Dean Martin’s handsome face and it became one of Hollywood's campiest novelties.
The “suit and tie” jazz joint was instantly hip, serving home-style Italian cuisine, steaks, and breakfast until 4 a.m. The interior included dark wood paneling and comfortable leather booths meant to
replicate Martin’s personal den.
Continuous entertainment was provided in a separate cocktail lounge that promoted female singers—perhaps ole Dino didn’t want any male competition—but by 1960, he had flown the coop for the Sands
in Las Vegas and sold the restaurant to new owners who kept the name and neon sign for 27 additional years.
Visitors flocked to the restaurant in hopes of getting a glimpse of Dino, but his neon face is as close as they got.

By the early '70s, the swanky restaurant that had once hosted parties for Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor descended into a tourist trap and was abandoned by its celebrity clientele.
During the Miami Vice era, the block on which the restaurant sat suffered a devastating makeover.
What was left of Dino’s Lodge, the Tiffany Theatre, North Beach Leather, and the 1960s dance club the Sea Witch were all stuccoed over, leaving them unrecognizable, then replaced with bland looking offices.
A 77 SUNSET STRIP dedication was later engraved on the sidewalk in front of the original entrance to Dino’s.

This September, the entire block was demolished to make way for a massive development.
I’m not sure if the plaque will survive, but the new parking attendants should carry a comb in their back pocket in honor of Ed “Kookie” Byrnes.

She founded the Facebook page Vintage Los Angeles in 2010. In addition to CityThink and VLA, Martino muses on L.A’s. past and present on Twitter.

Contrary to the above article, not all filming was done on the Warners lot. For instance in season six's 4th episode, set in NYC, Efrem Zimbalist is filmed walking around Manhattan, right past
the Plaza Hotels side entrance, the same one Cary Grant entered in North by Northwest to go into the Oak Bar for a libation. I have lapped up a few there myself.
77 Sunset Strip is a fake address, all the street numbers on Sunset Boulevard have four digits.
Dino's was at 8524 Sunset Boulevard, the entire block was demolished in 2013.

Odd that you mentioned N x NW. I looked her up the other day. Eva Marie Saint hit 100 back in July.

And N x NW has one of the best pick up lines I've ever heard.

"The moment I meet an attractive woman, I have to start pretending I have no desire to make love to her."

There's more, but,...

Hi Chris,
I got locked out of my account where Magnum Mania is, so I am tardy in replying.

"The moment I meet an attractive woman, I have to start pretending I have no desire to make love to her."

That is a terrific pickup line. Somebody should do a thread "great pick up lines from the movies/TV".
I could have used them when I was young, instead of the ones I learned from the 3 Stooges - "Hubba hubba", "Woo woo woo woo", "hey good looking what's cooking."

Eva Marie, sigh, I had such a thing for her, and wondered why the girls in my 7th grade class didn't measure up to her. She's 100, hard to believe.
Dick Van Dyke is 98 and until just a few months ago was still doing appearances, then suddenly stopped, the reports I saw - in the subtext - seemed to me to be inferring he wasn't doing well at all.
His TV wife Mary Tyler Moore appeared a couple of times on 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye when she was a starlet.

She was in an episode of Wanted Dead or Alive. I never really saw her as having a large chest. But, in the episode, they were packed in there pretty well. This was the only picture I could find without going deeper into it.
