I find the storylines at most (well the fish story was really bad...) pretty interesting and Hernandez' acting seems having improved a bit.
I see lots of small nods and elements from the old series still, the location shots are still spectacular (but rarer than with the original series).
Juliet Higgins is growing more and more with me. I find it a smart move instead of finding someone similar to Hillerman to try a totally different approach.
That aside, someone rightly corrected me when I was very controversial about watches many years ago, that Magnum Mania is a friendly forum where people relax and unwind and are polite and friendly.
Not sure if that's still the case when I see the mostly negative threads about the reboot.
Tastes and opinions vary and I totally accept this. But the amount of hate that is shown in many of the comments really put me off.
I mean, we used to love all elements of the old shows. It was a positive approach. It was and still is love!
And just because the estate is not the same (how can it be), the actors are different (god fobid they would be similar - all the hate about being just miserable copies that never could stand water with the original), many elements and storylines are modernized, some people get totally negative instead of appreciating what is still there from the original series. And there is still a lot!
Particularly interesting to hearing from people's take while at the same time they say, that they have only watched 3 minutes from the trailer.
Hi Bondtoys,
If you are going to do a reboot of Magnum PI the casting of Magnum determines everything else. Magnum is a larger than life character, the role requires needs a larger
than life actor, it's a visual medium and having a big man like Selleck conveys many qualities without having to spell it out.
Yes I know in real life size doesn't matter, for instance the most decorated soldier in US history was five foot five Audie Murphy. But for a leading man/hero in a
TV series Jay just doesn't have a commanding physical presence and his acting isn't nearly good enough to make up for it. Alan Ladd was even shorter than Jay, that's why
he was so often paired with the tiny bomb shell Veronica Lake. But Ladd commanded the screen with his talent, he could act, even if he had to stand on boxes in scenes
with taller actors, just check him out in the immortal film Shane.
What it comes down to is it's the producers fault, they miscast a boyish Jay - lose the facial hair and he looks 15 - as a leading man and for me that taints everything.
Now Perdita can act and she is definitely a woman and the producers are wisely beefing up her role into being Magnum's de facto partner.
Bond, there was one thread where things got personal and I didn't care for it either but otherwise Magnum Mania does a good job of policing it's own.
I was on another site and when the talk turned to politics it ruined everything. The truth is the far majority of those spouting off on politics have no independent
base of knowledge and are just vomiting back out what they heard from their preferred media sources because God forbid they ever read a book, which is why they are
such suckers for the hucksters. As long as the powers that be here nip the political talk and personal attacks in the bud we will be alright.
