BTW, I had to laugh after watching S8's "Turkey Shoot at Makapuu" because it's probably what my esteemed fellow poster luthergillis is thinking of when he claims that Five-O doesn't hold up, though the story itself *does* hold up.

Here's a rundown of an otherwise solid episode:

Easily the episode with the most "1970s-ness"! In this one we get:

Hang gliders
custom vans
eight-track tapes
funk music
bright orange headphones
a Paul Williams lookalike
a "Honey Blonde" in the form of Lee Purcell

The warmed-over late '60s era of the early '70s is finally gone. The '70s really didn't start until 1975, or rather the 1960s didn't end until 1975...

Very happy to hear that! :)

Although the Magnum community has certainly benefited from his being unemployed. :?

And with Pat Hingle and Alan Fudge! With Hillerman as the bad guy, I simply must see this one!

I *highly* recommend that everyone take a look at the eighth season Five-O episode, Wooden Model of a Rat. It features a particularly amusing performance by our own Kwan Hi Lim. He's positively hilarious as the henchman "Suzari", who is in the employ of the oily Ed Asner character, the amusingly-named August March.

Lt. Tanaka may be how we remember Kwan, but he played no shortage of interesting villains in Hawaii Five-O!

Just as soon as S9 comes down in price, I'll get my dvds and will post some John Hillerman screencaps from his episode, Man on Fire. Unless someone beats me to it.

Watched the end of a 5-0 episode on Spike yesterday and during the credits the line "Filmed entirely on location in HAWAII" pops up - certainly cementing the lure of the show. But lordy how those shows look so '70s'." No pun intended.

Rob

Just read that John Joseph Patrick Ryan (Jack Lord - stage name) died at his home in the Kahala area of Honolulu in 1998.
Sometimes I get so lucky, even I don`t believe it.

Magnum has that kooky 1980s look, too; so I know what you mean. I've never seen "dated" as a pejorative term. In fact, I have an endless fascination with the '60-'70s. To use the parlance of the era, "It's my thing"!

Hawaii Five-O's tenth season has been announced for December 14, 2010. I still haven't gotten the ninth season yet, though I have been watching season 12 and reading Karen Rhodes' Booking Hawaii Five-O book.

Five-O's twelfth-season episode "A Bird in Hand" has a "blink-and-you'll-miss-her" appearance by Agatha Chumley herself, Gillian Dobb! Her character's name is listed as "Gertrude Firth", but I don't recall her having any lines. This credit is not on her IMDB page, and her name is mis-spelled in the Five-O credits as Gillian Dubb! I made some screencaps of the episode. Sorry about the quality.

In the first picture, she's the one at the very back of the bus. In the second, she can be seen just behind baldy. Lastly, there's her name in the credits.
