Pahonu wrote: Wed Mar 03, 2021 10:12 pm It’s not an atypical story, historically speaking. The Chinatowns in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland are not in their original locations for some of the same reasons you describe above. The time frames are all different though. I believe the same is true of Seattle but I’m not certain.
Panohu, you are absolutely right about the reproducibility of this phenomenon. In France, we have several famous examples.

One of the best known is the evolution of the Paris Butte Montmartre neighborhood (from modest shopkeepers, cabaret owners and quarry workers to rich showbusiness artists, landowners from the tertiary sector and international finance) from 1860 to today.

At the end of the 19th century, Montmartre offered the lowest rents in Paris!
Several years ago I a saw a great documentary called Harlem in Montmartre. It’s about the rise of jazz clubs and the arrival of African-American expats to the area in the inter-war years.

Hello to all,

For today, no new find, just a look back on some discoveries made by RC regarding the episode 3.4 "Past Tense" that I watched a few days ago.

RC and others did a great job to find the main locations of this episode.

To summarize:

Lynden's escape from prison by helicopter was filmed at the student support services branch of the Hawaii city Department of Education at viewtopic.php?p=37905#p37905; Kaimuki, 475 22nd Ave
Honolulu, HI 96816

https://ibb.co/0DpWws2

The blockhouse/machine gun pillbox nest, where Lynden awaits Magnum's arrival, is located south of NAS Barber point... Definitely not on a remote desert island!! viewtopic.php?p=5395#p5395

https://ibb.co/cv6prPJ

According to RB's guide, one location remained to be confirmed: the bunker where Lynden lures and kills his two accomplices:

https://ibb.co/YWtXg8x
https://ibb.co/SxJP7LV

Still according to RC, it could be one of the depots or annexed shelters/revetments of the dispersal area of the former USMC airfield of Ewa.

https://ibb.co/dgsrfz6
https://ibb.co/dQm3dzh

Here is the comment he gives in his guide:

"There are many aircraft revetments in this area, and possibly smaller bunkers or tunnels (whatever it was that was seen in the show). This location is a work in progress. "

The hardened aircraft shelters, at the dispersal site south of the old runways, are semi-circular.

https://ibb.co/QPpvXJN

According to the facility map, there are however some smaller storage sites (ammunition, spare parts storage, workshops?).

https://ibb.co/0MZ1ksw

By the way, some of it would correspond to the proportions and to the appearance of a (small) buried bunker, but without any confirmation at this stage.

https://ibb.co/ryWDkQW

Under google Earth, you can find these 'candidates'.

https://ibb.co/1RwLR3w

One notices immediately that two have collapsed and that one seems to be razed.

Any other idea ? Had anyone ever visited this particular place ? (if not restricted).

Edit: I found this conference report from an historical preservation project concerning Ewa USMC former airfield. Really well documented. You may spot some picture of the aircraft dispersal facilities that were built after december 7th 1941 (watch at 11:00).

Thanks for reading

Great thread and thanks for all the work! We watch episodes while biking indoors and try to guess locations from our last visit. Our friend is a member of the Elks so we got to sit at the bar and outside. Fun stuff, and doesn’t seem to have changed much in 40 years!

Thanks Hmano for your appreciation. However, I must say that most of the credit goes to Rubber Chicken and others, I only continued the present topic. And don't forget that it's a collective work.

By the way, if on your side you find unexplored shooting locations or if you have additional information (especially in situ), don't hesitate to unclosed it here !

Indeed, Elk's Lodge does not seem to have changed much in forty years. The general configuration is the same, the pool seems identical. Maybe more renewal inside, the decoration, refreshed, more modern with clear wood veneers and lighter marble...

The place was used severals times, figuring King Kamehameha Club Bar during season 1 ans 2.

Thanks again for reading ! :magnum:

Watching the other day '3.5 - Black On White', I was puzzled by the very 'fake' side of the prologue which is supposed to take place in London... Apart from the extract from another (obviously old) movie to represent Big Ben Tower, the main street where Ian McShane and Lynne Moody meet has indeed an old and somewhat European feel (old stone arch, street lamps, brick walls...)... I won't comment much about the horse-drawn carriage... As if London had remained stuck in the XIXth century...

https://ibb.co/SxLcTHP

... Not obvious to find as a place in... Honolulu (because obviously, it was shot in Honolulu, according to the theorem 'producer is still near his money')...

From my knowledge, The store with the words 'roaring lion' does not correspond to any known location in London, at that time. Was it a little 'wink' to Red Lion famous establishment ?

On the other hand, I found the origin of Matteo's tavern seen here,

https://ibb.co/0yyJcrV

by chance while searching on... E-bay, where I found a... matchbox at auction (and yes, there are collectors for that...) that bears the mention of the old address of this place of resort!

https://ibb.co/F8LQ750

Merchant's street in Honolulu appears to be one of the oldest places of American Mechant compagny settlement on the island. It is obviously a famous place and still quite typical even if surrounded by skyscrapers...

https://ibb.co/16b9pzx

So a bit of history: " Once the main street of the financial and governmental functions in the city, Merchant Street was Honolulu’s earliest commercial center. Dating from 1854, these buildings help tell the story of the growth and development of Honolulu’s professional and business community. The variety of architectural styles depict the changing attitudes and living patterns during the emergence of Honolulu as a major city. (...) »

So, back to our prologue:

https://ibb.co/VTk2tzc

1/ In this scene, the guests in formal evening dress are walking down the stairs of Yokohama species bank, built in 1909:

https://ibb.co/BcHwj32
https://ibb.co/dJpyzWx

"Overseas branches of the Yokohama Specie Bank (est. 1880) were chartered to act as agents of Imperial Japan. The Honolulu branch was the first successful Japanese bank in Hawaiʻi.
The building at 36 Merchant Street dates from 1909 and was designed by one of Honolulu’s most prolific architects, Henry Livingston Kerr, who considered it not just his own finest work, but the finest in the city at the time.
The brick and steel structure is L-shaped, with a corner entrance and a courtyard in back. The bank purchased this property, previously occupied by the 1855 Sailor’s Home, in 1907. During its operation, the bank set aside separate reception areas for Japanese-speaking, Chinese-speaking and English-speaking customers. »

Today this remarkable neo-classic building houses the Cole Academy early childhood education center.

2/ Edwin Clutterbuck appeared, stuffed and lit his pipe in front of an imaginary english pub. He then met an attractive hooker...

https://ibb.co/T8J9Wxk
https://ibb.co/B4LHGdP
https://ibb.co/CzMrTfz

All this building, including So called "Roaring Lion » and (real) Matteo's Tavern, is known as the Royal Saloon (est. 1890) :

« In 1862, the Hawaiian Government officially permitted the sale of “ardent spirits” after many years of typically unheeded suppression. An establishment selling alcohol to the many visiting sailors was located on this approximate site as early as 1873.The bar was only one of scores of similar establishments in Honolulu’s harbor area during the nineteenth century. In 1890, local barkeeper and investor Walter C. Peacock built and probably designed the Royal Saloon, one year after the widening of Merchant Street. »

3/ Grasped with terror, Clutterbuck fled an illusive Mau Mau hunter... He stopped brielfy, in front of a butcher shop, and then disappeared in a dark alley...

https://ibb.co/bg0yPTk

This shot was taken close to Merchant street, at Marin st corner where... a real Irish pub is currently established !

This old fashion red bricks last property is know as the Foster Building (1891) : « Thomas R. Foster began his company, Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company, in 1878. The TR Foster Building at 902 Nuʻuanu Avenue was built as his headquarters in 1891.In 1880, Foster had purchased the estate of the renowned botanist William Hillebrand (1821–1886), which was bequeathed to the city as Foster Botanical Garden at the death of his wife, Mary E. Foster, in 1930.
(When airplanes came to the Hawaiian Islands, the Inter-Island Navigation Company founded a subsidiary, Inter-Island Airways. In 1941, Inter-Island changed its name to Hawaiian Airlines and discontinued its steam boat service in 1947.)
 »

Finally, I'd like to make a link with Pahonu's recent remarks about the "hidden side" of the shooting of TV series of the time. We have in this scene a perfect (and very visible) example of these 'backstages'.

Two details rather amused me: You could see that there are rows of street lamp posts and floral decorations everywhere. The first ones have simply been brought and placed here and the second ones hide in reality... parking meters !

BTW, these pictures are quite eloquent...

Those last two photos are more than amusing. When you look at them in detail, it’s hilarious. The street lamps are in the street, not on the sidewalk, and the flowers?!?!? So funny. Thanks GM.

I was sure it would catch your attention !  The fact is that the pavement was far than much narrow to accomodate the street lamps poles, so the props just put it in the driveway. Don't even try to park there with your van !!! :D

Episode 3.9 - Mr. White Death is an excellent opportunity to see the famous Ernest Borgnine in his work. There are also some notable filming locations, some of which have already been uncovered on this forum. I would add however, in my opinion, a new addition...

As a reminder, Sam has already been able to find Phil Lewis' office thanks to Rick Romer's confidences:

viewtopic.php?p=16094&sid=613a0be6e7274 ... e84#p16094

You will also find details about the location of the wrestling contest at the end of the episode. It is the Diamond head theatre (credit to Rubber's Chicken), which has not changed much today:

https://ibb.co/GMxBwxR
https://ibb.co/0sL4Xts
https://ibb.co/GRZyzN2

Earl's Hotel is none other than an establishment in the back of Waikiki beach: the Royal Grove Hotel. This hotel looks almost identical today:

https://ibb.co/X2nrv6t
https://ibb.co/ZdKqnWm
https://ibb.co/zbHH2w3
https://ibb.co/vPS8yv4

What (in my opinion) is quite new is the location of the office of Ms Jones, the archivist of the so-called 'Hall of Records'.It is simply the building that houses the Courts of Justice and the Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii!

https://ibb.co/pXdVjGw

https://ibb.co/LpdPqHs
https://ibb.co/RCNB3FH
https://ibb.co/SNmP28f
https://ibb.co/cF23YJJ

Note that the building in the background, when the Ferrari turns the corner, no longer exists and has been replaced by a park. It is the Attorney General Departement which red roof top is clearly visible.

In this episode " 3-10 - Mixed Doubles", Magnum serves as the 'chaperon' to a shady little pest who turns out to be one of the world's top ATP tennis players...

... But no one is, part-time, a professional tennis player and (also) bodyguard, even for our favorite world-class private investigator!

Almost the entire episode was shot on tennis courts, that's for sure, but where?

At the beginning of this little investigation, I (as usual) wasted some time browsing the main pro and amateur tennis courts in Oahu (Ala Moana Courts; Centra Oahu tennis center, Diamond Head Tennis center...) before realizing that... in the story, the action was supposed to take place on the courts of the Kamehameha Club (which must have been to be the richest club in Hawaii!)

In some of the shots, I noticed that the tennis courts were particularly close to the beach and must be part of a larger sports or recreation complex.

https://ibb.co/Wpp5qg2
https://ibb.co/v3qsWkg

And then I saw this...; Which made me laugh and cry at the same time... :

https://ibb.co/5RmWj4q

This square, grey and red building in the background is none other than one of the wings of the 'tripod' of the Kuilima Hyatt Hotel, part of the famous resort on the North Shore of Oahu that held its moment of glory in the 70s and 80s.

https://ibb.co/WF63CCt
https://ibb.co/bgqyv3n

We had already come across this place during our study of the episode "3.4 - From Moskow to Maui" of season 2... So the producers must have had a discount to come back in season 3!

Indeed the tennis courts of this complex are indeed south of the 'tripod'.

As for this scene where a red volvo almost smashes TM and its difficult protégée, it was shot at the entrance of this perticular Hotel.

https://ibb.co/MRGT4Mv
https://ibb.co/HhxK1fF
https://ibb.co/pKy4rVp
https://ibb.co/4VW79n8

You will se infra that this drive road has changed... Such a driver behavior today would be highly improbable, the Volvo would have faced a dead end !!

To finish, a small anecdote: when TM saves in extremis Carrie Reardon of the driver, a frantic pursuit of cars between the ferrari and the volvo starts... Several views of big straight roads follow one another and then TM passes the Kapalaau Stream bridge & Farrington Highway, which leads him to turn around to come back... after a few minutes, to the starting point, on the same parking lot of the Kuilima Hyatt Resort Hotel; only meters to the pursuit start! The least we can say is that the criminal does not make any effort to hide himself !

https://ibb.co/dbXcTt2

It is true that all this maneuver is, at the beginning of the adventure, only a 'masquerade' which in reality hides a much more serious threat... So I send you back to this episode for more.

Thanks for reading ! :D

Edit: i found a confirmation of all these in the website:

Scroll down to 'Kuilima Hyatt Resort Hotel (1982)'.

Let's go back to our sheep...

episode 3-10 "Almost Home".

A little "refresher course"...

Hello to all, today no big discovery considering the hard work already done by Rubber Chicken on this episode but also the additions of other members (here I refer particularly to Kalai-Pahoa in 2007...).

It is, thus, a simple update which gathers here the finds realized over all these years on this forum. None of the following places can be attributed to me, but I found it interesting to make a small update (40 years later) in pictures.

On my side, I tried to find (for self education purpose...) some elements myself. It is really there that one can realize how much time, method and skills are needed for this kind of research...

a/ Bridget Archer's « dump » hotel is located between Waikiki and the AlaWai Canal (Castle Hokele Suits - 412 Lewers St.).

https://ibb.co/kyWC2H2
https://ibb.co/FY00PLx
https://ibb.co/VBRdpxZ
https://ibb.co/YZYR2qc

In 2020, it is the 'SurfJack and Swim Hotel', which is not, strictly speaking, a hotel of simple transit, but rather a hotel of tourist stay 'medium class' (it is necessary to count today 315 $ the night without other service). Miss Archer could have found more economical especially with no intention to tan on the beach !

B/ The road to Mrs Tamura's Home

The shots were taken at the upper end of Brokaw st./Alohea av. where the road splits in a triple fork... As RC pointed out, to go to Mrs. Tamura's house, the most direct way would have been to cross, straight, at the stop sign, but TM preferred to take the big turn around, turning left ...

https://ibb.co/MpR191h
https://ibb.co/MMtSKb9

https://ibb.co/hfM7gdH
https://ibb.co/7QhLRLG

You can also see that the surrounding area was not as densely built as today.

C/ Mrs Tamura's Home

This took place at Kaimuki Neighbordhood.

Using some clues, I tried to find it myself by combing through the whole area...

Left, an old house (a bit of a New England style?) and a partition driveway.

https://ibb.co/cFbSgxk

A fire hydrant nearby and a house with a bow window (in the opposite side of the street).

https://ibb.co/V31tDwG

A house with what seems to be some kind of air vent or attic ventilation... (Pahonu, could you bring some light on this?)

https://ibb.co/q9VqFHn

In fact, I just missed the old house (in green) that borders Mrs Tamura's property on the left. Today, its staircase and entrance terrace are quite different.

Current adress is 714 7th av. Kaimuki District

https://ibb.co/s9m26xq
https://ibb.co/3TPGfj7
https://ibb.co/dpSgccT

The Bow Window house is still there and quite in good shape.

https://ibb.co/qNG8HVP

D/ Theft of the ferrari

adress : 206 Lumahai Pl.

There, you can see that, nowodays, it would nearly impractible to sneak a view on the ferrari from that lurking place (big tree, new house on the mound across the line of sight).

https://ibb.co/L6FnT4G
https://ibb.co/7KxNqx3
https://ibb.co/VS4ZN8F
https://ibb.co/Q6WFwzb

E/ Intra Pacific Import

As found by RC, IPI office entrance took place at the the Royal Kuhio (2236 Kuhio Av.) (Royal Waikiki Condominiums), just behind Waikiki beachfront.

I a still amazed that the owner/manager granted the permission to place a dummy sign on its pediment !!
Indeed, Vic Stout is surely one of the wealthiest mobster of Honolulu !

https://ibb.co/8KRxy43
https://ibb.co/54FT9R6
https://ibb.co/RP1LJsy

F/ Intra Pacific Import hidden garage

This an old acquaintance dating from « J. Digger Doyle » (1.17).

https://ibb.co/7yQSp4z
https://ibb.co/3rGT3kK

This a maintenance hangar aside the Ha'iku valley Kanoeohe Omega Transmitter. All was already depicted concerning this location, so i only mention it here for the record. The station and trail were closed to the public in 1997.

http://wikimapia.org/1202758/Naval-Radi ... -Station-C

Both buildings are in bad condition... lost in the mist of time...

https://ibb.co/KXh0sHv

As the well known stairways...

https://ibb.co/2tccYnH

G/ Parade Fair – Admiral Wheeler meeting

RC found this too. This large lawn plaza was part a Fort Ruger properties and houses today Kapi'olani College activities.

The surrounding buidlings visible in the episode were scrapped in 1982-1983 (sea satellite view from 1978 below). The new ones are far more spacious.

See the proximity of Magnum PI filming stage ! The transportation fees should have been quite low !

Re: Magnum P.I. Filming Locations - A Rubber Chicken Guide

Today here is a little addition to episode 3-12 "Heal Thyself".

Location: the tip of Maka-pu'u (on top of the cliff). The final scene sees TM trying to prevent her friend (and war buddy), Dr. Karen Hamon, from ending her life. When he succeeds, Dr. Jorgenson (the big bad of this story) tries to shoot them from a disused building.

One can have serious doubts about the presence of Jorgenson at this precise moment... How could he knows that Karen would try to commit suicide at that very spot?

In the same way, one can wonder about the best chances of hitting his target at the maximum range (60 or more yards ?) of a Walther P38 ?

However, a quick look at 'google maps' shows that there are no more buildings on this promontory.

Apparently, these buildings (3 houses) were still standing during the episode 7.12 "The people vs. Orville Wright" (1986).

Below you will find a link to Maka-Pu-u station history :

https://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=141

To summarize, The lighthouse was built in 1909 (for the anecdote, the main lens, of a type - hyper radiant - and a size was brand new in the US, was made in France!)

Several lodgings and technical shelters have been built since then. The dwellings in question seem to date from 1927 with the installation of the radioguiding station. These lodgings were to be used both to accommodate the lighthouse keepers and their families (thank you Ivan!) but also probably also the permanent staff of the guidance station and other technical apparatus operators.

Note that after December 7, 1941, the station would have been reinforced by lookouts and watch posts.

Surprisingly, afterwards, the history of these houses goes beyond fiction :

« The Coast Guard automated Makapu`u Light Station on January 4, 1974 and then monitored the station remotely from Honolulu. Sometime during the next year or so, the dwellings were secretly used to house prosecution witnesses during the trial of an underworld boss, who was facing federal tax evasion charges in Honolulu. In 1987, the government declared part of the land around the lighthouse and the keeper’s dwellings as surplus. The property was turned over to the State of Hawaii, but a group of armed Hawaiians took up residence in one of the dwellings as part of a land-ownership protest. After several weeks, the squatters were evicted without bloodshed, and shortly thereafter the state razed the dwellings. »

This could have inspired some scriptwriters!

Thanks fo reading. :magnum:

Very interesting, informative post!

Thanks for doing the research and taking the time to share your findings....you have entered the league of "super-sleuths" to be sure.

Are you related to "Rembrandts Girl" by any chance? Or maybe Rubber Chicken? Obviously a few others in that club as well, but this just reminded me of some of the info she used to dig up "just looking around". :D

Thoroughly enjoyed the post, hope to see many more of a like nature from you (as you have time and inclination). :magnum:
