The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)

Re: The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)
Hi Kenji..... the fact that the stair hall was used in the episode.. it's not a big stretch to believe that the guesthouse wasn't used... this was 1969 just two years into the series and the estate wasn't used much.

Totally agree with you Sam. I believe back in the day Eve let the crew from HFO have more flexibility with where they shot scenes, but I believe something was broken one time and she shut the door on interior shooting...at least for MPI.Sam wrote:Hi Kenji..... the fact that the stair hall was used in the episode.. it's not a big stretch to believe that the guesthouse wasn't used... this was 1969 just two years into the series and the estate wasn't used much.
I wonder if Eve installed the tennis court again with the money she made from the HFO.

Re: The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)
Hi Kenji... I think things came to a head in the final episode of Hawaii Five-O.. in that episode the house was used extensively.. and as we know she didn't let MPI use much of the interior.. pretty much the only shots used in MPI were from balconies or the upstair Lanai.KENJI wrote:Totally agree with you Sam. Re: The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)
I did omit one comment that Kenji had made in the list of episodes filmed at Pahonu. He had noted that there was a scene from "Forty Feet High and I Kills" that was possibly filmed in the actual kitchen, but I confirmed with Pahonu today that it was definitely filmed in the kitchen. Here's a screen cap (I captured the frig open so we could see what Eve had in there. I see a yummy papaya
)

And here's the location of the vented kitchen window, which faces the back courtyard/patio...

Hi Pahonu,
I've spotted another window well for you to add to your model.
Refer to robbie308's terrific, but sad pics of the estate.........
http://magnum-mania.com/Forum/viewtopic ... start=2010
Find the one that zooms in on the front entrance area off of the driveway....look in the corner just below that ugly exhaust fan and you will spot what looks to be a window well. It connects with the basement location too.
Question.....
Did you ever figure out the dimensions of each room? It wouldn't be hard to get a fairly accurate idea of the dimensions, but it would take a bit of time, just wondering if you've already done this research and would be willing to share it with the gang.

Also from those pics, does the tool shed at the end of the garage wing have a window or door in it? I had always drawn it as a door and now I'm not sure.

It's definitely a window from that side.
Refer to the old newspaper clippings with the sketches of what Pahonu will look like and you see a window there...... also the end of the shed looks like there is window there too.....door should be around back lining up with the entrances for the garage/carport.

Re: The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)
Thanks Kenji. There are some differences between the drawings and how Pahonu was finally built, so I like to look for photos to confirm things. On looking closely at the pics, one of them seems to confirm the window, through the foliage.KENJI wrote:Hi Pahonu,Pahonu wrote:Good eye! It most certainly is a window well into the basement. Now that I think about it Kenji, I'm not really sure about the placement of the window wells on the back side of the house. We know they are there, but how many and exactly where? With your sharp eyes, any thoughts?
Re: The Robin Masters Estate (Pahonu)
My pleasure Pahonu! Great to see we are still finding these little details after all of these years.
I'm with you on the drawings and how it was finally built......photos are golden for sure.....I've also seen that window in person sneaking a quick look over the wall
...the foliage was pretty thick at the time, but you could make it out. One of robbie308's pics confirms it too which you've commented on and now spotted too, neat to see it without the overgrowth....there is another pic in the MM archives from many years ago too, but I'm not finding it right this second....anyways we know its a window.
As for the window wells around back.....I think you have the two outside the dining room area correct....one on each side of the doors and the small balcony above, plus we've seen a pic of them. I'm still wondering about the other two though. Pull up your aerial pics of the when the house had a dark roof and you can make out one of the wells, it's fairly large in size and it's location.....I just don't see two wells being squeezed in between the main hall door and the one dining room door. I wish we had a better pic from above, but we don't.
The only other pic is the one confirming the dining room wells and they are a good size. Tell me what you're eyes are seeing...it's just not scaling for me. The last well you have closest to the ocean would put it basically in the corner of the basement which would make for an odd spot for it (we don't really know the actual layout in the basement so it's hard to say). I'm just going off my eyes and no actual measurements though, so you'll have to cut me some slack.
I've always hoped there would be a small tight servant stairwell where we think the closet door is located under the upper stairs, making a window well quite possible (natural light for going down the stairs) but I'm not 100%convinced, plus we have no proof (yet
). As for other possible window wells....I don't think there are any more wells back there....i.e. on the kitchen wall.....we have the one at the front now, plus we know there is a set of newly discovered stairs that appear to be in that area so I don't think another well would be needed. As you know, back in the 1930's a basement was a true basement (mostly storage and in this case even cold storage), not like today, where the more light the better. Not trying to be negative at all Pahonu, just walking and talking through the scenarios
....and like I said, -love what you've created. I know trying to balance the house out with so many balconies, windows and doors on each side is better on the eye, but sometimes restrictions get in the way of that. My thought is the basement had to be stopped that far back from the ocean so Davis couldn't mirror the wells on the other side of the main hall stairwell door going out back so he just mirrored them in that one corner (one on each side of the dining rooms doors). You know this style the best....What do you think? Always fun to discuss anything Pahonu with Pahonu

Thanks Kenji!
I go through potential possibilities, or scenarios as you put it, a lot. I'm glad someone else enjoys thinking it through also.

In my original model I placed a staircase to the basement under the main stairs as you've described. Cool that you brought that up. It's a logical place for them, I think, given the elevator location, which I assume goes to the basement where its mechanicals would be. I removed it in the new model but it's a large basement so maybe... The newly revealed stairs, I think, are in the section of the house between the kitchen wing and garage wing. The small service yard is located there, between the rear yard and the garage drive. I've drawn the laundry there also, as the drying racks shown in Mad Buck Gibson are not too far away, by the workshop. I think the stairway heads down from that spot, but I'm not sure exactly. Any more thoughts?
