Wow, Steve…you're a brave man to admit that here. Thursdays are the same for me, although unfortunately for some reason Esquire isn't showing MPI today. I panicked at first thinking they took it off for new summer programming (like MeTV taking off the classic Hawaii 5-0!) but thankfully MPI is back next week. Thursdays are my favorite day of the week, just like back when Magnum was first aired! :D

I had the same reaction when I realized that we just started getting Esquire on our "Suddenlink" cable selection.
I do have the entire series on disc, bought them one at a time before they were available as a "set". I agree whole-heartedly about the feeling elicited by this tv show.
thanks 308guy.

it had been a long time since i had seen mpi, i have enjoyed watching the series from the pilot on. curious, what's the verdict on the dvds, the individual season discs better than the series set or...?
308GUY wrote:There was a jubulation associated with it being aired on public tv though...can't really explain it, I mean commercials and all (blech!) but I guess it is just the fact that somebody includes it in their programming lineup indicating that it IS still appealing enough to a large enough audience to warrent them dedicating time to showing it. Kind of puts it in the same class with Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy, Perry Mason, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. Not that it's in any of those genre's, but that it is considered part of "classic" tv. It always was to me, but seeing it broadcast like that, just gives it a boost toward that status. Ok, rambling now.....my specialty! :magnum:

Anyway, glad you decided to join up, look forward to seeing you post in the future.
i could do without commercials, waaay tooo maany and waaay tooo looong. i've put my $0.02 in at my house, i would be fine with canceling tv, i find little on tv worth my time as i get older, but i am only one voice :) mpi is classic tv in my view as well. perry mason, another good show i've not seen in a while. lucy, i love it, one of my favs, when lucy and ethel need to get john wayne's foot prints in cement - again. i also loved the dick van dyke show.

woops, now i'm ramblin' :D

thanks steve, much appreciated :D

i'm familiar with esquire, from 2 to as many as 7 or 8 episodes (iirc), on wednesday, was thursday - we'll see after this week. i figure esquire will drop the series after it finishes running it from beginning to end. encore, maybe 2 eps a week, kinda bounces around the seasons? cozi, this i'm not familiar with :?:

On Encore they are uninterupted, uncut for commercials and even have the episode previews before the opening. Is this blasphemous???
that is definitely a lot of magnum, don't burn out. i must admit when the marathon starts too early i've been falling asleep. i didn't the first few weeks but more so lately. i actually prefer no more than 4 eps in a day, last week was 6, this week is 4 again. i did make it thru the first week, maybe 8 eps. don't get me wrong, i can hang in there, i watched band of brothers straight thru - start to finish on a saturday when i rented the series on dvd. i think the commercials are zapping my motivation at this point, even with recording and skipping the commercials you lose a lot of show.

i had considered one of the movie networks for a time, encore was my favorite. we get what seems a free weekend regularly from one or the other but i rarely watch, mostly fake porn crap that starts earlier and earlier or movies they played the last 2 times we had the weekend free. my favorite genre at this point is classic film noir on tcm, but tcm is beginning to change too, trying to appeal to a younger generation i guess. maybe the word classic has new meaning to the entertainment business, not sure.

oh well :)

thanks conch, the estate is well kept - nice job :)

mpi is one of my favorites of all time, the show was great in so many ways, the cast, the scenery, the storylines, you had land, water, the air. the show wasn't stagnant like some are, you know, a few common sets, the kitchen, living room, the diner or coffee shop - ala friends, family ties, sorry, even seinfeld - all good shows but kinda claustrophobic set-wise for me.

i was thinking about the dogs a few days ago, i know there were a few sets i guess, and i'm sure they've been gone for a while, i hope they lived a good life.

btw, i wasn't sure of your connection with cozi, if you have a minute a cliff's notes version would do - just wonderin :)

thanks again for the welcome.

Oh man, I missed that! Thanks so much for letting me know, Mike...I got used to seeing it on Thursdays so now I'll definitely check ahead.

Love Carol Burnett so much and I have such fond memories of watching the Carol Burnett Show growing up. My folks would let me stay up late on Saturday nights just so I could watch it. Plus, as we all know, TS has said that she's one of the sexiest women he's ever met!

Welcome to the forum Mike, and thanks again!

carol burnett is funny as h-e-double-hockey-sticks, in fact the whole cast was great - conway, korman, lawrence, waggoner, and yes van dyke, one of my favorite male comedians along with buddy sorrell  . remarkable, ran over a decade and recorded 278 episodes initially, 287 in total.

speaking of parents, my mom also loved mamas family, another great cast imo. i dont recall watching either show originally (too young) so i suspect i watched when they were in reruns.

anyway, thanks for the welcome and see you around the forums.

I agree, The Estate and the Islands were characters in the show itself. It added to the depth and richness of the series. Even the way the show was filmed helped. I don't much about cinematography, but especially the first season had more of a fuller, movie feel to it.

Cozi tracked me down through this site actually. First I did a shoot they cut into 30 and 60 second spots for the SuperFan focus (they did that for a few of their high profile shows when they first started on the air. The others were Lone Ranger, Six Million Dollar Man and I think Lassie). I then went back for a clip show (10 Steps to a New You) where I basically pooped the bed. I had no idea what I was doing and was surrounded by pros who did, but I has about 15 seconds of screen time (in a 30 minute show) and was featured in promos. :-)

Then, the biggie . . . Magnum March Madness & Marathon. I offered early on to be their Robert Osborne for Magnum PI episodes, hoping to shoot them from my tiki bar (I was only half kidding), but they came up with the play on March Madness and the experience was great! Too bad they had to pull everything down. :-(

Programming update...I don't see MPI on Esquire any longer, however the usual COZI Thursday evening block is still being aired...whew! Encore Classic also still has their M-F slots at 6 & 8 pm.

Conch; The Magnum March Madness premiere had two of my favorites episodes: Death and Taxes, and Unfinished Business. Hopefully you had something to do with the programming selection. As I recall, these episodes along with several others, were said to have the "gritty Miami Vice" feel to them. Outstanding episodes!

Yes I did! I chose my "Sweet Sixteen" episodes and they put them online in brackets for viewers to vote on for their favorites.
