I totally agree with everyone's comments about this show. Except that I think all those swoopy shots of Las Vegas are probably the MOST interesting parts of this show -- at least in an artistic sense. And, of course, apart from the scenes with TS/Cooper.

Do ANY of those people in that casino do ANY work??? And what the heck is this show really about? Because it's all just mindless hijinks with some nincompoop characters. Any halfway decent show has at its heart something that it's about, that gives the show a point-of-view. This show has nothing there, so no matter what its characters do, it doesn't resonate at all.

It was totally awesome, though, to see the MPI threesome together again, even if only briefly. And their appearance really made it obvious that the regular cast is quite unappealing.

Steve...great you emailed Larry and he responded so quickly. He seems like such a nice guy. It's unfortunate though to hear about John's poor health. I love John Hillerman and hope for the best.

Sounds like Larry liked your compliments. Loved seeing Larry wear the ring. Love those 3 guys as much as ever.

That's very cool Steve, Mr. Manetti, or should I say Larry, seems like a great guy. I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Hillerman, I hope he's not too bad off. :( And I hope he knows how many people remember his work so fondly, right down to his one line role in They Call Me MISTER Tibbs! :)

On a bright note, as was mentioned season 7 is coming out and I got an email from amazon saying it has shipped! Just in time too, I finished season 6 this week. (I like to spread them out, they're more special that way.) :P

Man, that blows that JH isn't in the best of shape.

Well, I hope he gets better, even if we never get to see him on Las Vegas.

(Which, BTW isn't the world's best show).

However, it's REALLY cool that Larry answers his own fan mail.

:D

Okay, I have a shocking flub for "Las Vegas," not that we're counting -- who cares in this show? -- but the handling of the $100,000 Morgan silver dollar was ridiculous. That precious a coin would be kept in a sealed case, not being handled and tossed around like that. The value of these, as I understand it from my husband who collects them, is that there were only 12,880 ever made, something like 12,000 were melted down, leaving only 880 available as proof coins, most were put out in circulation so are worn with normal wear and tear, and 140 still proof (perfect) ones have been found. These are the ones that are so valuable. So if Sam had one of those, she wouldn't be tossing it around like that or she's destroying its value. One just doesn't handle coins like this bare-handed and pass 'em around to be handled by anyone else's hands.

Also, if Cooper is a billionaire, wouldn't he have bought one of these in a sealed, graded condition long before needing this one in this show? I mean, he just spent $341 million for the casino. He doesn't have $100,000-120,000 to buy a coin he wants?

Just a thought that made me pause at the time and do the research to confirm what I thought.

Golf and friends,

I'm curious to see if any of you got the same feeling I did about the poker game. It seemed to me that Cooper may have a dark side. I felt like the implication was that he lured the girl into the game all along in hopes of taking the coin in the game. The taking of the coin may be more valuable than the coin itself (hince the reason he didn't buy one...)

I doubt I will watch the show unless there is another appearance by Larry and Roger. The show is pretty weak, even with Tom.

Luther et al.,

I may have missed it because I wasn't paying that close attention, but I didn't realize Cooper even knew she had the coin until she brought it out at the table (and where was it, anyway? Was she carrying a purse? Did she have pockets? I'm sorry, but I wouldn't just carry a $100,000 coin around on me!). I thought his inviting her to play with them was a pitiful plot-line anyway. I think people who play in high stakes games like that don't invite just anyone on the spur of the moment, and hopefully surely not an airhead such as she. I mean, she's a glorified escort, right? She's there to keep high rollers happy -- "arm candy"? She's not the security expert. She's decoration! Okay, she is the former manager's daughter, but I can't see that she has any "job" but being pretty and keeping male gamblers happy in the casino. So Cooper invited her to play since he ran off the customer she was trying to lure in -- why does she deserve some favor in return for that? Does she get a percentage of the take on a particular person betting and losing at the casino?

And he told her repeatedly not to bet the coin.

But I think we may be over-analyzing a show that's not worth analyzing, much less over-analyzing. It's not as good as Mr. Selleck's worst movie (which is probably "Daughters of Satan")(and even the reviews of that movie said Tom Selleck was about the only saving grace of the entire movie).

I agree with LHG that Cooper has a dark side. Cooper invited her to play in the poker game because he chased her client away from the gaming tables. I think Cooper knew her client was skittish and would leave the tables and go back to his home casino, and had planned this all along so that he would have an excuse to invite her to the poker game so that he could make it up to her. A convenient excuse.

Toward the end of the episode Cooper is seen adding the coin to his collection of similar coins. That is why I believe he planned this all along and set her up. At one point during the poker game, she thought she was being clever when she spotted Cooper twirling his chip on the table and then after she folded he said to someone in the room (supposedly in secret) that he was bluffing. He said it just loud enough that she would hear it. Later in the game, when she didn't have enough money to cover the bet, she saw Cooper twirling his poker chip once again, which she believed was an unconscious sign that he was bluffing, as before. So, she bet the coin believing that he was bluffing. Cooper set her up from the beginning from when he chased (intimidated) her client from the casino, to making her believe that his twirling the chip was a sign that he was bluffing. The guy is supposedly a billionaire. I'm sure he has more than one trick up his sleeve.

I also sent Larry an email. Below is my email, and Larry's response. What a class act!!!

And might I add, our thought and prayers go out to Mr. Hillerman, A gifted actor, and a man of great character.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the nice compliments. I thought it only right to wear the
ring. Maybe they'll bring
us back. Who knows?!

Hello Larry,
Hey, Just wanted to say thanks for wearing the Magnum PI team ring
in Las Vegas. We all
were wondering who if anyone would be wearing one. That was an
extremely classy thing to
do. We all loved the references to Magnum, and look forward to seeing
you again on the
show.
Sincerely,
Mike Brown

IH,

You and I noticed the same thing going on with the coin. To me it was obvious once we saw Cooper get his coin collection out to place the new coin in. It wasn't like he was surprised that he needed that coin. It was more like a sinister "I have what I want" kind of look. Will Selleck be able to pull off a character with a dark side?

Also, they made too much of the bluff scene for it not to mean something important.

I hope the show will get such a jolt in viewers from having the MPI reunion that they will bring Roger and Larry back several more times...

LHG

Hey, good observations on the poker game guys.

That's really cool that Larry replied to your emails. What a class act!

I'm probably over-analyzing this, but I can't help but wonder if all of these Magnum references have a deeper meaning. I expected one or two, but why so many of them? The Team ring, the Ferrari, the "starting with one chopper", the reference to a club, the Hawaii driver's license, the British friend who couldn't make it, the reference to letting the girl go (Michelle), the fact that all three were buddies from the Vietnam war. Dare I say it, but could this be some kind of completely unexpected "Chekov's Gun" and foreshadowing of a major plot twist to come!? Could AJ Cooper, "Larry" and "Roger" actually be Magnum, Rick and T.C.!!?

Nah, it can't be. Can it? :?
Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!

Maybe it could be, and I hope it does because the show isn't that great to begin with.

I honestly think that the whole bringing of Manetti/Mosely/Selleck in is to capitlize off of the fame of Magnum PI and boost ratings (not to mention the fact that TS is pretty generous by having his old friends share in his windfall).

I'll bet ya dollars to doughnuts that the ratings this week were higher than previous weeks, simply because M and M were onboard. That's pretty much the only reason I watched it!

I've enjoyed reading the comments on the show. I agree that it's not very good other than the appearances of the MPI alums.

It is much easier to watch if you catch it on the NBC web site as a video. Without the commercials, it's more of a true story line. You can also watch by chapter (if you don't mind watching the same commercial at the start of each chapter). This function allows you to re-watch the scenes you prefer.

I'm wondering if the writers will work in more of Magnum's background into Cooper's "missing years."
