Re: A discussion of history, setting, and why the reboot fai
I posted a musing in the general Magnum PI talk subforum, because mostly the article is about why history and Hawaii's landscape and cultural connections to East Asia were so important to the soul of the original series, but since I end it on why therefore Hawaii has no such importance in the reboo...

Re: Diversity
One of the things that always impressed me about the show was the easy relationship between Thomas and T.C. It was obvious T.C. was his closest friend, he was there to help Thomas during the most important times, but they never made a big thing out of T.C. being black. He was just T.C., and Thomas ...

Re: Anybody ever watch Burn Notice?
Yeah, I used to watch it. I’ve also been comparing the New Magnum to it, but I consider Burn Notice to be considerably better.

Re: Season 1 Episode 1: I Saw the Sun Rise - Pilot (1.1)
USA Network was making shows like this up until recently during its "Blue Skies" period. I don't know if they stopped (I canceled cable about 5 years ago). Shows like Psych, Burn Notice, etc. I liked them. I don't really care for the "gritty" and dark turn a lot of network TV has taken, to try to ke...

Re: Looking for a cheaper alternative to the Pepsi GMT?
When I was a teenager in the early 90s I used to own a Casio analogue dive watch with the blue and red bezel, probably cost the equivalent of $80 in today's dollars. It's always been a really common design. I wonder what happened to that - and several other watches I owned when I was younger. I gues...

A question for MagnumILWU
MagnumILWU, Just in the last ~12 hours you said: It was not bad! If all you are going to do is compare to the 80's series, than there is no need to watch it, or nitpick every little thing! This is a new show, not the old one, most everything is going to be different! There is only one Magnum, but th...

In Country: Place and Historical Connection in Magnum PI
To the casual observer, the setting of the original Magnum PI series merely served to afford the protagonist a carefree, beachboy lifestyle in paradise. But Magnum was not just a feckless playboy, he was a man haunted by his memories of the Vietnam War, a war that in the early 80s still haunted Amer...

Re: Who’s watching tonight?
I never made it past the surfski scene. I was so used to seeing Selleck’s ten foot long legs going the length of the thing that Hernandez looked like he was a tiny child sitting inside a duck boat. I started laughing out loud and left for the gym. P.S. Between this and Hawaii 50, Lenkov is fascinat...

“Shiggins”, that’s funny. I like Mangum too, because there is a street in Houston called Mangum and when I was a little kid I thought it was called Magnum.

Re: I’m SO glad
My little voice tells me it’s going to be canceled without running even a full season. Even if it didn’t suck so much AND compare so unfavorably to the original, it’s too much like the Hawaii 5-0 reboot, so its superfluous.

Re: Who’s watching tonight?
This is HORRIBLE!! Anyone notice his gun sounds like a 9mm instead of a 45! JUNK JUNK!!! I’ve turned it offf! NEVER AGAIN!! NOT MY MAGNUM!! I believe it is a 9mm. I think a Sig. Of course TS fires a 9mm back in the day because back then they couldn’t make .45 ACP blanks that reliably cycled a semia...

Re: Live stream of consciousness reboot thoughts as I watch
Final thoughts: has my love of the original series clouded my objectivity - ie, if I had never heard of the series, would I have a better view of this episode? Actually, I’d probably find it an inferior clone of the Hawaii 5-0 reboot. Even if there were no Hawaii 5-0 reboot, I’d find this to be infe...
