Re: Cannon (1971-76)

Does Cannon "evolve" from what was presented in season one? If so, in what ways? I would say not really. There is a big moment in season five that explains his reason for becoming a detective. I won’t ruin it with any more details, but I felt it odd that it wasn’t explained at the beginning of the ...

Re: The Now Playing Thread!

It's best to post the artist and song, just in case the link becomes no longer valid. As for those "simpler times", it's been my experience that those times are "simpler" only because those who experienced them got through them. After that, one can pick and choose what constituted the "good old days."

Re: M*A*S*H

M*A*S*H "found itself" pretty quickly during season one. By the time of the episode referenced above, the show "felt" like itself... It's fun to (re)watch the journey. Dueing seasons 1-3, I prefer the original cast. When the new implants join in S4, I prefer that cast. This is quite an accomplishmen...

Re: The Rockford Files

I haven’t finished the third part yet but I generally agree. It’s written in a scholarly way for a thesis so style is absent. The real problem is she only viewed 32 episodes selected fairly randomly. That’s only about a quarter, and simply not enough in my view. That said, in 1989 it was much more ...

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

The video Ivan posted only adds to Jack Lord's..."unappealingness." Luckily for me, I can separate the "art from the artist" and admire the heck out of Steve McGarrett while rolling my eyes at his alter ego's lesser qualities. There will never be a better or equal McGarrett than Jack's; the man was ...

Re: Murder, She Wrote - Magnum on Ice

Unless you were talking about mean-spirited ugliness in his westerns which I haven't really noticed. His westerns can be a bit edgy but they're solid entertainment and don't come across as exploitative. As for THE EIGER SANCTION I remember being really bored by the first half of the film (all those...

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

Garwood, This is spooky. The episode led me to Dash Hammett as well! I remember going to the library in early high school and finding a collection of short stories with the Continental Op and The Maltese Falcon. It lead me to other hard-boiled detective fiction and the many film adaptations...

Hingle's performance in The Twilight Zone episode The Incredible World of Horace Ford is not considered among the series' greatest moments, but I find much to appreciate about it.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

Red Faced Thespian made a huge impact on me as a child, and not just because of June Chadwick's rockin' bikini scene! Magnum's feeble attempt at dressing like Dashiell Hammett eventually led me to that author's work, not to mention the Thin Man films. That episode also directed me toward the ...

Re: Murder, She Wrote - Magnum on Ice

I admire the first two Dirty Harry films, the Leone "Man With No Name" trilogy, Unforgiven , and The Eiger Sanction . Outside of those, my Eastwood admiration comes and goes. There's a mean-spirited ugliness in several of his movies that rubs me the wrong way. It's something I recognized but didn't ...

Re: Cannon (1971-76)

I'm nearing the end of Cannon S1. There seems to be some average episodes stacked in at the end of the first season but it's nothing like The Odyssey of Jubal Tanner . William Conrad is absolutely superb as Frank Cannon. He doesn't need a supporting cast; that's how good he is in the title ro...

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

S4 imo suffers from occasional bouts of "The Cutes." Smaller Than Life is a definite low point, but there are "cutesy" moments scattered about the entire season. Bringing things back to Five-O , I am thankful that series rarely had a so-called "comedy" episode...I can think of 4 over the course of i...
