Hey all, per my earlier post, I have a list of character centric episodes (which of course is open to interpretation), based upon my comment that Season 4 is my favorite because it has the most "other than Magnum" episodes.
By definition, the name of the show pretty much screams that every episode focuses on Magnum himself in some way or another, but I feel there are a few that showcase him more so than usual than the rest of the ensemble cast.
(And yes, I consider it an ensemble).
So without further ado......
Let the debating begin!
Season 1:
"Curse of the King Kamekameha Club": Rick
"Thicker Than Blood": TC
"Adelaide': Magnum
Season 2:
"The Woman on the Beach": Rick
"Wave Goodbye": Magnum
"The Elmo Ziller Story": Higgins
Season 3:
"Past Tense": Higgins/TC
"Foiled Again": Higgins
"Heal Thyself": Magnum
Of Sound Mind: Magnum
"I Do?": Magnum
"Faith and Begorrah": Higgins
Season 4:
"Home from the Sea": Magnum
"Smaller Than Life": Rick
"Distant Relative": Rick
"Letter to a Duchess": Higgins
"Sense of Debt" TC
"The Case of the Red Faced Thespian: Magnum/Higgins
"Paradise Blues": TC
"Holmes is Where the Heart Is": Higgins
"Dream a Little Dream": Magnum
Season 5:
"Mac's Back": Magnum
"Tran Quoc Jones": TC
"Professor Johnathan Higgins": Higgins (duh)
"The Love for Sale Boat": Rick
Season 6:
"The Kona Winds": Magnum
"The Hotel Dick": Magnum
"Round and Around": TC/Phantom Bob Minor
"Going Home": Magnum (duh)
"Paniolo": Magnum
"Blood and Honor": Magnum
"Way of the Stalking Horse": Magnum
"Who is Don Luis Higgins and why is he doing these terrible things to me?": Higgins
"A Little Bit of Luck, A Little Bit of Grief": Rick
Season 7:
"Death and Taxes": Magnum
"Paper War": Higgins/Magnum
"Missing Melody": TC
"Death of the Flowers": Rick
"Autumn Warrior": Higgins
"Solo Flight": Magnum
"The People vs. Orville Wright": Rick
"Limbo": Magnum
Season 8:
Unavailable b/c I haven't seen many of the episodes in YEARS.
Feel free to add/delete/suggest!
I'm interested to hear your thoughts

Man, what a great topic and post Doc! I can't say I disagree with anything on your list. I think we should add some major recurring characters as well. It may even be better to sort the list by character, rather than by season. What do you think?
Carol
"No More Mr. Nice Guy" (Season 4)
"Blind Justice" and "Compulsion" (Season 5)
"The Love That Lies" (Season 8)
"Mac" (either incarnation, MacReynolds or Bonnick)
"Mac's Back" and "The Love-For-Sale Boat" (Season 5)
"Limbo" (Season 7)
"Infinity and Jelly Doughnuts" (Season 8)
Michelle
"Memories Are Forever" (Season 2)
"Little Girl Who" (Season 7)
"Unfinished Business" (Season 8)
Luther Gillis
"Luther Gillis: File #521" and "The Return of Luther Gillis" (Season 4)
"Luther Gillis: File #001" (Season 5)
Tanaka
"Try to Remember" (Season 2)
Unfortunately Doc Ibold and Agatha never had a "spotlight" episode, nor did "The Lads". ;)
This would make for a great topic to add to the Lists section of the site. Do you mind if I do that Doc?

Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!
Hey James,
By all means, go for it (as for adding more recurring characters and putting it in the list site). As for your suggestion for doing it by character, I thought of that myself but didn't really have the time (Kinda wanted to get the post out quickly).
Now, if you look at it one way, "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime" featured Agatha pretty prominently, even standing up to Higgins!
I think we could let it slide and give her that one, given all she's done for the show.
Unfortunately, you are correct in that my namesake doesn't have a spotlight episode. Guess he's too busy patching Magnum up, playing golf, or hunting for treasure with pedicab drivers....
(BTW, we may want to add "Transitions" to the Luther list).
Also, before you go into all the work for transcribing it into the list site, do you think we should wait for some more feedback from the other forumites in case they think of something we missed?)
BTW Shermy, I concur.
Maybe a "lads" list? (Which I'm DEFINITELY not volunteering for)

No, I wasn't going to put it up now, Doc. It'll be in a couple of weeks probably.
They missed a good opportunity with Ibold (and Glenn Cannon) in my opinion. Seriously, they could have had a great "change of pace" episode, highlighting forensics and/or medical sleuthing of some variety, ala Quincy. Maybe have a climax where Doc saves Magnum from poisoning, or something. Heh. ;)
Hey, good spot on "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime"! Agatha gets one!
"Under World" (Season 5) might fit for T.C. in this criteria. He only speaks in the beginning and end, but the whole episode is about him (and his chopper on the bottom of the ocean) and his "brother". Same thing might apply for Tanaka in "Tiger's Fan" (Season 8).

James considered the exact same thing myself, but since TC really isn't in it, I wasn't sure if it counted.James J. Walters wrote:"Under World" (Season 5) might fit for T.C. in this criteria. I could go for it if you could!
:D
IH, I think you could make a case for that one too!IslandHopper wrote:"How about "Rapture" (season 6) for the Magnum category?"
