The original version of this episode (not the syndicated one) where Morgan Fairchild gets away doesn't seem to be on my season 1 DVD. Neither is the Simon & Simon "Emeralds" episode. Do I have some other version of the season 1 DVD? I basically purchased the box set from Amazon about 2 or 3 years ago which has all 8 seasons. These are single-sided discs. I don't know if they were reissued or not since their original release, hence maybe that's why my season 1 is different and doesn't include these "bonus episodes"? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Also the pilot episode on my DVD is split into parts 1 & 2. Is it the same for you guys or do you have it as a 2-hour movie? It's strange because both Memories are Forever and Did You See the Sunrise are presented as 2-hour movies on my DVDs but the pilot is split into 2 separate episodes.

They made a lot of strange decisions in those DVDs. Some of the 2-parters are spilt, some are not. I think the Simon & Simon 2-parter is on the 2-sided season 1 discs; they were not on my 1-sided season 1 discs that came in the box set I bought from Amazon around the same time you did. I went to eBay to find a copy of the season 1 discs that had the S&S 2-parter on it.

Thanks, eagle. I just went back and read some of the comments and it looks like people have already asked about this (you included). That's what I get for not reading the comments first, duh! :)

I'm still curious about the pilot though. Is it in a 2-part format on all the DVD releases? It's odd because I would have expected the pilot to be presented in its original 2-hour format. All the other pilots I own on DVD (Five-O's "Cocoon", Knight Rider's "Knight of the Phoenix", Airwolf's "Shadow of the Hawke") are all presented as 2-hour movies, the way they originally aired, not the way they were broken up in syndication. Can't imagine why MPI would be any different, especially with both "Memories Are Forever" and "Did You See the Sunrise?" being 2-hour movies on the DVDs.

Just watched the syndicated version. I was a big fan of S&S as well, so I liked this ep and the original crossover.
This ep was sssooooo 80's.
Branscombe Richmond.... wow what a filmography. I challenge you to find any TV show or action movie from the 80's that he was NOT in. This guy, although all small roles, was EVERYWHERE.
Morgan Fairchild...... wow incredibly HOT.

I love finding the guest stars that made the rounds like Richmond did.

I tried to convince the kids it rang the Kremlin, but they weren't buying it.

Anybody else think there’s a grammatical error in the title? If the singular is Ki’i , shouldn’t the plural be Ki’is, not the possessive Ki’i’s?

The original air date of this episode is October 1982, and Morgan Fairchild was on the cover of Penthouse magazine that month. Probably not a coincidence?

I have to say, I’m disappointed about A.J. wearing the watch. Just takes the edge off TM wearing it a little, to know he wasn’t the first character in the show to sport one.

When Magnum jumps over the wall to warn Higgins about Catherine/Alex, the yell he supposedly makes while in mid-air clearly comes from off-camera somewhere. Check it out: https://vimeo.com/376236730
It sounds much different than the actual two “Higgins” TM says as he approaches the wall.

Why is Rick sitting in the front of the chopper when the back is empty?

Agreed. I failed to distinguish between the two my first time through this episode.
Jay-Firestorm wrote:I did find Magnum’s dinner with Catherine (Morgan Fairchild) to be a bit dull; I think it was supposed to ooze chemistry between the two, but it just didn’t work, and the episode would have done just as well without it.
I think it was put here for the sole purpose of having at least one instance of a client with whom TM actually lived up to his “no fraternization” rule.

I’ve never had to give the address of the hotel I'm going to stay at when renting a car?

I like how Magnum sees through the act, even when they go to dinner and she is clearly making an offer of ending the evening in bed but Magnum isn't interested, obviously turned off by it.
Isn’t it supposed to be the curse affecting her? Granted, it comes off in a fake I-need-to-distract-these-guys kind of way, but I think in theory at least it is supposed to be genuine from a plot standpoint.
Little Garwood wrote:Plus, just as he does in the MPI episode, Rick leaves the spray canister on after he leaves so that is saturates the carpet.
I’ve never understood this. Why saturate the carpet? And is it really chemicals? If so, that’s pretty nasty, but I’m assuming it was just water? Wouldn’t leaving the can spraying just call attention to the fact the ki’i was gone? Why leave the tank at all? Why not carry both in and both out. Who knows how long it would be before the theft is discovered then, without the spraying tank yelling, "look, something is amiss here!" They probably could even have made a clean getaway, but I guess that doesn’t move the plot forward in the manner needed.
Croix de Lorraine wrote:'She was young, and pretty, and Harold...wasn't.
If Alex/Catherine conned Harold out of the ki’i, why don’t Simon and Simon (or even Harold?) just go to Higgins and tell him he is in possession of stolen property? (I know, I know, I’m thinking like a plot hole detective, not a screenwriter….)

In watching the Magnumometer Moments for this episode again, I think I found a timeline flub. Higgins says the Kahaluna was torn down in 68, but he also says he remembers escorting Clive Jackson and his lovely wife Astrid there. I can't remember right now exactly when Higgins came to Hawaii, but wasn't it something on the order of 10 years before TM arrived, i.e. no earlier than 1970? Therefore making it not possible he'd escorted the Jacksons to the Kahaluna prior to it's demolition in 68?

I want to say 1972, but not sure where I’m getting that. Case of the Red Faced Thespian, I think.

I mentioned in an earlier post that Morgan Fairchild was on the cover of Penthouse magazine in October of 1982. Fans of bait and switch will enjoy the pictorial...pretty tame stuff for Penthouse. And no mention of the Magnum episode! Terrible.

Hi everybody, my name is Alessandro, from Italy!

I've just discovered this great site on Magnum, P.I., and I'd like to say that this great TV series was a very big hit since it was aired back in '82 in my country!

I belong to a bunch of old fans of his, and we have discovered just by chance that this episodes had two different versions (in Italy it has been broadcasted only the "regular" episode (no cliffhanger) , and the other version is not included as special feature in any italian DVD version.

So we have never been able to watch the episode with has the "cliffhanger", and we would immensely be grateful to you all if you could tell us how we could enjoy the rarer version, in order to watch all the episodes of this unforgettable show.

Please, please help us to do that!

Thanks, and a BIG CIAO from Italy!

Hi Alessandro,
Welcome to this wonderful site. There are some full episodes of Simon & Simon on Youtube. However the episode you are looking for is not there. The episode title is "Emerald's Are Not A Girl's Best Friend".
However you might enjoy the following .......

Thank you for your kind reply Terryfromkerry, but in Italy we have all the episodes (both in english and italian language) but that one which was (I think) only broadcasted in USA and put into DVD season 1 (USA edition only).

We also have the "second part" of Simon & Simon (we bought the italian DVD of that season only for that purpose).

So, I am here to ask to american fans of Magnum to give us the chance of having ALL the episodes, because all our efforts in Italy have been vain.

Thanks again.

Alessandro,

Welcome! I've uploaded both the "cliffhanger" Magnum episode and the Simon and Simon crossover. I realize now you already had the Simon and Simon episode, but I'd already uploaded it. But perhaps there are others who don't have it and will enjoy seeing it.
