Was reading some reviews last night.

Boy, more than a few hold no punches.

“Neo-Magnum overdoes on goofy pyrotechnics, but a cheerfully bland Hernandez can't match Tom Selleck's charms.“

“The newbie, Jay Hernandez (Scandal) comes across more like Tom Berenger in The Big Chill, playing a wimpy actor in a Magnum-like show.”

”Despite the calibrated charm of your star, Jay Hernandez (who casually assumes Tom Selleck’s defining role, knowing full well that a hint of a stubbly goatee is no match for the ’stache), your pilot episode is an uninspired slop of cornball action and opening misfires.”

The critic who gave zero:

”The pilot for the new Magnum, full of explosions, car chases and frivolous relationships, is kitsch designed for mass appeal. It shares nothing with its predecessor because it has no heart. This show is “Magnum P.I.” in name only, which is a shame.”

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

A bit stunned that you haven't seen that. Good John Wayne movie. Lee Marvin was superb.

Not really a review but a shot in the article.

Mighty no more: The sad, greedy decline of network television into games and circuses

https://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainm ... story.html

Sad to say, given the sorry state of network programming, these shows will probably do OK — better than, say, the reboot of “Magnum P.I.” on CBS. Although doing OK by network standards these days is a very low bar.

Why would you even dare to remake a show which was already a classic and a huge success? Why even bother to take the risk of not being able to meet the high standard set by the original show? But I suppose all of us do stupid things at some point in our lives

Ouch.

Not to bang the drum too loudly, but do the reviewers watch more than the first two episodes? Every show needs to find its footing and the episodes so far are admittedly a mix - some are harder to swallow, but some have been pretty solid for a new show. As always, JMHO, but I can think of at least a dozen TV shows that started out shaky but went on for years as a well-respected show once it figured out the right formula.

Heck, 'Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii' and 'China Doll' weren't really blockbusters, but back then, people gave the show a chance and it paid off in the long run. Later episodes of the new series have focused on casework instead of explosions, Ferrari-destruction and helicopter jumps (which were way over the top, I agree).
