DVD set Viewing trick

I have a regular philips DVD player, not blue-ray, and noticed a cool trick. On the remote, the lower left button is for screen size adjustment. If you set it to 1/3 or 1/4 screen it actually shows more area of the original full screen image. Not to mention it's also clearer. So in other words, the original full image on full screen will have more footage around the edges that you've not seen before. Not a lot, but it's still cool I think. But what do I know? It's 12:22 AM and I'm browsing Magnum Mania.
