Actually of all the episodes thus far this is probably the weakest for me. I don't dislike it or anything, I just think all the previous ones were stronger. Yes Jimbo doing his undercover schtick is always fun! But the part that I always loved is when Jim gets really pissed at George DiCenzo for tailing him and suddenly stops the car and throws it in reverse and just rams it into DiCenzo's car!! He definitely did not see that coming! Love it!!

EDIT: I found the Sian Barbara Allen character kinda annoying though. Hey, she was on Five-O! So was DiCenzo - thrice!

It's not a problem for Rockford. He has a team of mechanics that are on standby to fix the Firebird, often before the episode ends, but for sure by the time the next week's episode begins. The Firebird gets blown up (season 2)? Not a problem. The car will be good as new by the next week. The cars of the 1970s must have been super easy to fix up very quickly.

But yeah, I thought it strange to intentionally ram his car into another car.

Agreed. If you thought Ivan blowing up the Ferrari was a big deal... pfftt... Jim's Firebird gets totaled in the even numbered episodes and blowed up real good in the odd numbered episodes. Yet no mention of this is ever made. The car insurance companies must love Jim! Wait, didn't he drive them all into bankruptcy?? Nowadays it's a little different of course. I don't know if you ever read the fine print on your insurance policy but I do and it says that Jim Rockford is excluded from applying for coverage. I don't care what insurance company you're with but they all say that these days in their fine print. Just take a closer look next time. That's why he's no longer solving cases. The stacks of unsolved/cold cases was never as high as it is now in the history of L.A.

But I do agree that somehow Jim slamming his Firebird into another car seemed uncharacteristic for him. I've never seen him do that ever again. Not that I recall, anyway. I mean he's not trying to save a life or something. He's just pissed at being tailed. So it felt kinda extreme. But hey I still love it!

Here is good timing on my part. Right now I am watching S02E17 Joey Blue Eyes. Angel Martin was being escorted to a car parked behind Rockford's to be taken. Guess what old Jimbo does? Well, he put his car in reverse and gunned the engine, smashing into the car. This causes confusion and Angel runs to the Firebird and they speed away. Apparently ramming into cars in reverse was Rockford's M.O. in the early seasons.

Apparently ramming into cars in reverse was Rockford's M.O. in the early seasons.

Ok, I guess I stand corrected. Still, in this case he was probably trying to save Angel's life so I can cut him some slack. But imagine if someone is irking me because they're hanging too close to my rear bumper (come on, we've all experienced this, right?) and I just decide to throw it in reverse and ram the guy behind me. I don't know if I'd be able to wiggle my way out of that one. "But officer, I can explain...". That's if the other guy doesn't cave my head in first.

Yes. It seems more reasonable in this circumstance. Just I thought it weird that we were talking about this and then I go to watch two episodes of The Rockford Files and in one of them Rockford backs his car into a car.

To me that action sounds like an insurance scam as it will look like Rockford got rear-ended. But since the two times I saw him do this his car somehow came out without a scratch it would not be much of a scam.

One was used as an action car, one was kept pristine for closeup work, and then there was the crash car. The action car had microphones to record road sounds during scenes. The cars were the powerful Firebird Formulas with 400 cu in V-8s, but made to look like the basic Esprit model by eliminating the hood scoops and spoiler. This was apparently Garner’s choice, nothing too flashy, but a performance car he could really push. It also included improved suspension, brakes, and tires. The models changed slightly over the years including the most obvious, two to four headlights. There were also changes to the rear window. The changes by Pontiac to the nose in 1979 were not to Garner’s taste so they continued to use the 1978 models until the series ended.

Is this the episode where the father is worried his daughter has become a member of a Manson-like cult? It was made not long after the actual murders.

That shot is actually the Paradise Cove parking lot where Jim’s trailer would eventually be parked, though it was located further west up the beach along with the Sandcastle restaurant. The pier entrance can be seen and the houses down the beach at the end of the parking lot included one that would eventually be used in David Janssen’ series Harry-O that debuted at the same time as Rockford.
