Contemporary Hawaiian Music

#1 Post by T.Q. »

I like modern Hawaiian music going back to Gabby Pahinui, Bruddah Iz, Hapa, John Cruz. Plus a lot of slack key stuff.

Relaxes me.

Anyways, this is a cool Hawaiian song/video you might like.

Thanks man. I’ve enjoyed Hawaiian music a lot over the years. Slack key is regularly playing in the background while I work.

Love Bruddah Iz, Kahulanui, Makaha Sons, etc.

This was always playing on the radio of my rented Jeep when I was on Oahu in 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGazQwDq43o by Makaha Sons.

Here are some cool ones from Kahulanui that also got a lot of playtime on the radio:

And here's a great oldie I love from Sol Bright (who played the old Kahuna in "Curse of the KKC"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPP3Vs4bAjg

Good tips.

My go to relaxation is stuff like Kawika Kahiapo

My favourite is the soundtrack for "The Descendants" (great but sad movie). Play it a lot. Good mix of stuff.

This has always been one of my favourites contemporary (modern) Hawaiian CDs.

My wife really likes The Descendants film and the soundtrack too. I hear her playing it a lot. I watched it with her once, and it definitely is a sad movie but I enjoy the music also. I’ve never seen the track listing, thanks.

No probs.

I think the neighbours think I'm weird.

There's a shared pool and I'm often playing Hawaiian music (with Hawaiian lyrics).

I grew up listening to it but to anyone else might think it's strange listening to music you don't understand.

Thanks for this suggestion. It's great!

The Descendents is a regular play for me too. Perfect vibe.

John Cruz is great.

I also love Nathan Aweau. He sang for Hapa on one album.

The sweetest voice.

Seen him a bunch of times.

Hey Conch, just curious... do you live in the Florida Keys or NYC? I seem to recall you mentioning both but don't remember the details.

Currently NYC but have my eye on one day ending each day with a sunset cocktail on the west coast of Florida!

Love the Keys but don't think we could afford to live there . . . better to live closer and visit.

Wait, are you saying that your tropical getaway (Flamingo Key) that you've posted pictures of is somewhere in the Big Apple?
