Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau

For those of you familiar with ESPN films 30 by 30,they released a nice story last year on Eddie Aikau.It's available on Netflix streaming,worth the watch.Here is the trailer.

Indeed, it's a great one! It's one of my favorite 30 for 30's, along with The Band that Wouldn't Die, June 17, 1994, The Two Escobars, Four Days In October and Unguarded.

Really surprised to learn that Eddie only won one surfing tournament (the 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship). I would have thought he had won more. Still an incredible big wave surfer! Over 500 saves at Waimea Bay as a lifeguard! Not one person lost. Amazing. That image of him paddling away from the overturned boat on his surfboard, in an attempt to paddle over 12 miles in open ocean to get help will haunt me for a long time.

At the end when you see the shots of Eddie alone in the ocean, I thought about "Home From The Sea".
