Pacific Heartbeat - Waimanalo slack key on PBS

#1 Post by rubber chicken »

My DVR records a show on PBS called Pacific Heartbeat which is "an anthology series that provides viewers a glimpse of the real Pacific—its people, cultures, languages, music, and contemporary issues." The episode recorded in the past week was called "Let’s Play Music!
Slack Key with Cyril Pahinui and Friends" and features mesmerizing performances from a Waimanalo backyard. Sadly I don't think the episode is viewable online, but local PBS stations may play this episode again sometime. It would be nice to give notice here if someone sees that it will be on, although airings may be different for various PBS affiliates. I believe Pacific Heartbeat is an ongoing series, so other episodes should be airing as well.

Various scenes of Waimanalo are shown: Rabbit Island, the mountains, horses, streets, Waimanalo Beach Park, etc. And beautiful Hawaiian slack key music is performed by various musicians. There's a particular song about Waimanalo, and I couldn't help making up my own line, which rhymes with the original lyrics. See if you can tell which line is mine:

Waimanal-ohhhhh.... no other place to beee....
Waimanal-ohhhhh.... loved by all who come to seeee....
Waimanal-ohhhhh.... where Magnum lived for freeee....
