For those who are worried that Magnum & Cynthia never got the chance to see where their relationship could go -- how do we know that they never did? At the end of this episode, they make tentative plans to visit each other again, so I'd like to think that they were finally able to make an informed decision on the matter. Due to their busy, rather unpredictable lives, however this could easily have taken a year or so of occasional visits -- by which time Magnum had decided to re-up and settle down with his young daughter. Depending on Cynthia's feelings about motherhood, there could very well have been a new Mrs. Magnum at some point after "Resolutions."
Overall, this seemed to me like two fairly thin episodes arbitrarily glued together. I'd rather have seen each one fleshed out into a more satisfying story in itself.
James, a picky correction to Episode Note 7: the girl didn't offer TM half of her sandwich, she asked him for half of his (which he apparently gave her).

Yes I quite liked her and the story line in LA - but in this episode both she and the plot line with her were very awkward, forced and just generally uncomfortable. Perhaps that's why they didn't bring her back in the series finale and instead had Linda Lee Ellison reprise her role from 'Forty.'Jaybird wrote:Pretty good episode but with a strange ending. Dana Delaney returns and she and TM have an uncomfortable time. I am disappointed that his engagement to her never went anywhere....or did it?
Though if memory serves me correctly, the series finale and the story line with Linda Lee was also a bit forced, jumpy and odd? I guess the writers wanted to finish with TM staying single and focusing for now on his relationship with his daughter. I like it that way, but I do wonder why they then decided to put these forced relationship scenarios into a few episodes?

This is a funny one! I loved that Thomas tells us the story while in the airport coffee shop and that he tries to keep his proposal to Cynthia a secret from the guys. I always wondered why was Higgins so thrilled that Thomas was possibly getting married? Did he think they would get married and leave the estate or that they would stay at the estate and he liked the idea of having a woman live there? As far as bringing back Cynthia for the finale, I bet they wanted to, but by then she had been cast as Colleen McMurphy on China Beach (another 80s show I watched) on a different network (ABC).

At 55, Dana Delany just made People magazine's "Most Beautiful People" of 2011.

When they make the original-cast Magnum movie, we may find out that Thomas & Cynthia have been married for 20 years or so. Maybe Lily has a little sister -- or a kid brother who'll threaten to beat up on TC's son Bryant and Rick, Jr., if they so much as wink at Lily!J.J. Walters wrote:Thomas made a mistake.

Loved it
This was a really good Magnum episode...I mean to me it is little wackiness like this that makes MPI what it is!
Yes, Magnum running in an impromptu marathon, hijacking a scooter years before dumb and dumber lol...escaping into the "jungle" tied to a kitchen chair...and through it all Magnum doing his best to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune to make it back to see his lady before she leaves...
and of course, the beaten up but not beaten TSM narrating it all to us over his cup of airport coffee, alone...
And again the camaraderie of his good friends to run interference for him!
rated it 9.5

The ratings are all over the map on this one - ranging from "Perfect" to "Just Awful." My take on it is at the low end of the spectrum (Not so Good). My main reason for this is that the writers really made TM out to be a cad. I liked the idea of the porn case plot line and I liked the idea of Cynthia coming to visit after L.A., but the two together made for a scattered episode with senseless behaviour.
Just simply explaining to Cynthia what he was dealing with on the case would have just been considerate - regardless of his true feelings for her. Basically, he just behaves like a dick in this episode.
Also, Rick, TC and Higgins being enthusiastic about TM supposedly getting engaged to someone they know nothing about isn't realistic. It's your buddies' job to pull you aside and say "um, are you sure you know what you're doing here, pal?"
Sorry. But while I like some scenes from this one, the episode just doesn't gel. Too bad, because there's great potential.

I had always thought Magnum was going to end up with Maggie Poole.... I might be the only Magnum fan who thought that, though.Frodoleader wrote:I think this episode always left me wanting more. More Dana Delany obviously, but even more. Maybe TM & Cynthia getting engaged? Of course, that would upset the dynamics of an already perfect cast. Maybe if Cynthia returned at the end of season 8, and instead of Rick marrying Cleo, TM married Cynthia? I think that would have made an interesting series ender: TM choking on the "I do" as the series ends, like Rick does.
Woof, woof... thirty years uglier!... woof, woof...

I always looked at it like a Higgins/Agatha situation. She was willing, and he was otherwise engaged.Doc Fred wrote:I had always thought Magnum was going to end up with Maggie Poole.... Re: Re:
Well, she surely was in favor... I don't remember the name of the episode or the season, but in one episode Higgy said to Agatha that he planned to marry, and she assumed it was her... only to be heartbroken when she found out it was Lady Somebodyorother... that was one of the saddest things I saw in the whole series.Doc Ibold wrote:

Re: Out of Sync (7.19)
This is one of those wistful episodes about how tough it is to find love in later adulthood and keep it. It was difficult to watch Magnum sabotage his budding relationship with Cynthia, played by the incredibly beautiful Dana Delaney. There is a somewhat awkward but candid scene when they talk on the beach that seemed realistic and natural. I'm glad they decided to keep it in.
Events conspire to keep Magnum and Cynthia apart. He misses her at the airport and then she appears at the worst possible moment. Once Cynthia arrives, Magnum seems suddenly conflicted about her presence. He consistently abandons her in favor of his client. Flash forward to beaten-up, black-eyed Magnum, who reflects on the events leading up. He ends up pursuing a trumped-up case and losing Cynthia in the process. Apparently Magnum didn't feel he was good enough for her. The ending wasn't entirely satisfying for me.
