New Pahonu Location Found

#1 Post by Pahonu »

I was watching an episode of Hawaii Five-O last night called Banzai Pipeline and I spotted a brief scene from the inside of Pahonu. It’s not even ten seconds I think, but clearly shows the inside of the living room by the door to the arched loggia. Through the glazed door can be seen a vent window to the dressing room of one of the first floor suites. The paneled interior door leads to a hall and the other first floor suite. The panel molding on the walls with wallpaper inside was seen in the real estate photos before Pahonu’s sale.

The living room was seen more completely in the H5-O final episode Woe to Wo Fat, and very clearly in the Vega$ season 3 opener Aloha, You’re Dead.

I know there’s a page here on the forum somewhere that has a list of all the times Pahonu appeared on screen and this can now be added.

Below is an image showing the location of the scene noted here. The two doors and vent window can be seen in the floor plan.

I don't even remember that scene and I've seen the episode several times. Also who is the gentleman in those pics? Not one of the guest stars that I recall. Also the episode was almost entirely shot on the North Shore, at the Pipeline. It was a surf-heavy episode. Curious how Pahonu found its way into this one.

Hey Ivan,
It’s near the very beginning of the episode. The man in the images is the one killed on the beach and then the surfer takes his wallet out of the car and drops the film canister in the sand. They use Pahonu as the mans home and show him getting off the phone, walking to the door, stopping, and going back to get his wallet off a table. That’s the whole scene, but it’s definitely Pahonu. Then he drives to the beach and gets killed, so I’m not surprised you don’t remember him. He’s dead before the five minute mark I would bet. Why they chose Pahonu, I don’t know. I’ve seen this one several times myself and have always enjoyed it. That’s why I stopped to watch it.

Ah ok, so it's the guy who gets killed on the beach at the start. Got it. Definitely wouldn't have guessed he was inside the actual Pahonu for such a brief scene. Weird.

It is quite random. I was wondering if it was a pick up shot they did in the following few weeks while filming at Pahonu for another episode. We did such pickup shots a handful of times while I was in production, usually at the request of the editor. I looked on IMDB and not only do none of the following episodes feature Pahonu, but none in all of season six I think, so I’m stumped.

Yeah I don't think we see Pahonu again until season 8's "Death's Name is SAM" which features quite prominently as the headquarters of the terrorist group led by John Colicos.

It's funny but in the next hour on Heroes & Icons they will be showing "Banzai Pipeline" (at 3pm EST) so I'll tune in to see if I can spot that scene of that guy inside Pahonu. :) Of course I have it on DVD too. Too lazy to get it out. :P

Yep I saw that scene. But how anyone can tell it's Pahonu is beyond me. Of course you seem to know the interiors right down to the nitty gritty so you probably recognized it by the wallpaper or something. :)

The shape of the vent through the door is what caught my eye first. It’s a pretty unique shape to Pahonu and used throughout the house for the windows to service spaces and for privacy, such as the kitchen, trunk room, dressing rooms, and bathrooms. I did a quick rewind when I saw it and confirmed it with several elements, including the wallpaper! You got that one. The glazed door, paneled door, and corbels under the beamed ceiling are also present. There’s no way I could have completed the SketchUp model of Pahonu without studying these details. Most of them are in the model… not the wallpaper! Spending so much time on it over the years has burned it into my brain. Still, I’d seen the episode at least two or three times before and didn’t catch it.

The real mystery to me is why they shot such a brief scene there. They must have sent a second unit to do it and added sound later. He had no dialogue, if I remember correctly. Sending the whole crew to a location for that short of scene makes no sense.
