I really like the cold war nostalgia of this week's episode. The whole concept of KGB agents guarding athletes seems so bizarre by today's standards.

This episode always reminds me of the story of Russian hockey player Sergei Federov defecting to the Detroit Red Wings :magnum:

Maybe I should be more clear. What I find so nostalgic is the way Nina is guarded and escorted by KGB goons. I realize there continues to be a wide range of police states around the world, but none that are truly captured in Western popular culture the way the Soviet Union was (especially in the USA) back in the day. Probably big stories like Nadia Comăneci's defection made this type of storyline very relatable.

Characters like Kalugin and Olga were just so unique to this time. Maybe they continue to exist and they just haven't been exploited fully in our popular culture. Need to get some insider intel from someone who works in one of the more recent Olympic Villages.

There are a couple of dozen Cuban players who defected playing in MLB right now, Aroldis Chapman, Yasiel Puig, Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Abreu and others. It doesn’t make headlines very often because it is not terribly infrequent. One thing is very different from the Cold War years, however. Most of these players defect to other countries first and establish residency there. If they come directly to the US, they must enter the MLB draft. They can bargain as free agents for far more money if they are non-US residents. I suspect we don’t hear the defection stories much here because they typically happen quite a while before they sign in the US. I recently read about a sizable group from Cuba who just defected from a tournament in Mexico. It was just a few weeks ago and it was about a dozen of them.

Enjoyed this episode, definitely had not seen it in a long time (30+ years). While there were some very big plot holes/stretching of credibility - it held my interest and I did not remember the conclusion of the episode.

Rating this season, I put this episode just behind dead Man's Channel, currently the season is batting .500 2 solids hits and 2 fly outs. Interested to watch the Michelle episode again, it is one I have seen a bunch - I did not realize it was that early in the series (although in hindsight 5 year old lily should have been a tip off).

Incredible stories, but did Mogilny spend his first night in American staying up all night playing videogames and eating junk food?

Party over? What about Memories are Forever? I’ve got it as one long episode rather than a two parter...

OOPS... Was just testing if we were dealing with mature mature adults that would watch on their own without prompting.

I like this episode. It really puts some of the main pieces of Magnum lore into motion. Michelle gets called back throughout the series (off the top of my head - home from the sea, echos of the mind and naturally this episode paves the way for little girl who).

Ranking the season I would put this one in the middle. Much better than Billy Joe Bob and the woman on the beach but slightly below the Russian pilot and dead Man's Channel.
