Favorite scene and favorite episode

#1 Post by eagle »

Hi, all.

What was your favorite scene in the series? Mine is, without a doubt, the very first scene in the very first episode, with Magnum swimming up to the property and then stealing the Ferrari. Many times I will watch just that sequence. I love the expression on Higgins's face as Magnum starts the car and races off.

As for a favorite episode, I haven't seen it enough to rate. I'm going through ER with my wife right now (we're in season 3), but am about to also start up Magnum again on my own. After that, maybe I'll be able to answer the second part of my post. :)

I think my favorite scene has come to be the one where Thomas is counting Higgins doing sit-ups in "Computer Date." That scene really sums up the friendship between Thomas and Higgins that makes Magnum such a cherished show to me. Just love how Thomas is drinking a beer as he counts, and how Higgins wants to reach for his cigarettes. Thomas takes a little fun at Higgins' expense, but he's also really encouraging him - with that humor and compassion I think makes the show so memorable.

I will need to stay away from this post for a bit, because there are so many classic scenes that I'm afraid I might change my mind too often and repost time and again. Good thread, Eagle!

All Higgins related:

Higgins' face when he learns Magnum came out of the coma in Infinity and Jelly Doughnuts and then composes himself before he goes into the waiting room.

Higgins and Elizabeth Barrett running in the woods in Birdman of Budapest and Higgins making the Peregrine Attack Call. The look on her face is priceless.

Higgins running after Magnum with the Scimitar and Magnum hiding in the closet in Forty Years from Sand Island.

The last scene of Memories are Forever, when Thomas is sitting in the hospital bed watching the television news report about Vietnam. However, I consider just about every frame of that episode as worthy of being called "my favorite scene"--and it is of course my favorite episode, too.

Awesome question - tough too :D

Maybe favourite episode is Home from the Sea and fav scene is the Death and Taxes montage in the alley. So, so damn good. The editing, the use of what seems to be the killers POV with the camera and the way 'Mama' fits, the look on Thomas' face when he sees the dead girl in the dumpster, it's all amazing.

Can´t pick just one. Impossible. But i sure love that first scene in that first episode without music just hearing the waves and Magnum coming out of the water. Epic stuff!

I can't pick just one either, so I just list a few ...

- of course the very first scene of "Don't Eat the Snow In Hawaii", it's just classic
- also already mentioned, the "Mama" featured scene from "Death and Taxes"
- the final scene of "Did You See the Sunrise?", this is a classic one too which never left my mind since I first saw it
- a quite funny one: when Higgins distracts that Russian guy talking about his view on communism/socialism in "From Moscow to Maui", that guy's way of looking is epic (the very final scene of that episode is terrific too ...)
- any scene referring to the Vietnam War as a "never ending war", I always relate this description also to the Yugoslavian Wars, that I luckily haven't had to experience, but are still present in the Balkans today (so in fact some of my "personal stuff" :) )
- the "other way" of Magnum's narration in "Out of Sync", especially that one about losing three hours
- my most favorite narration: that one about cliches in "The Hotel Dick" ... those are narrations that make me think of Magnum as a philosopher disguised as a Private Investigator :)

... and a lot more ...

Kidding......right? "A" favorite scene....from the ENTIRE series......no way.

The whole series fits the question minus a few "clinkers" (Smaller than Life....annnnnd a couple others.. ) but the series, at least for me, is escapism at it's best.

Magnum, the estate, paradise, Ferrari, waaay too many "favorite" scenes to shave it down to one in particular, but off the top of my head, one comes to mind before many others.

The scene in Mad Buck Gibson where TM and Buck are on the peak and Buck is getting ready for his "flight", Magnum tries to talk him out of it, then Buck prevails and Thomas helps him launch....he understands...he "gets it". Then there's that music. THAT'S good television, story telling, entertainment, whatever you want to catogorize it as....great moment, at least for the show...for me.

I could go on and on about other scenes, and maybe I will at some point, but that one comes to mind as often as any other for me. :higgins:

Yup, we agree.

Good topic though, as everybody here knows, we don't need much of a reason to talk Magnum, but this thread subject is as good as any, and probably better than some!

Well, I loved that scene so much I transcribed and then posted it over in the Mad Buck Gibson thread, not to mention a bunch of words regarding writers and TV shows!

Yep........I have that scene saved on my DVR. Powerful use of music and Selleck conveying emotions without a lick of dialogue.....
