I thought I'd start a thread, in case any fellow Lego fans wanted to find out more about my son's Lego Magnum sets...J.J. put a link to my Facebook album, but if you have issues with Facebook, he put a few here where I can link to them.
I don't want to be tooting my own (or my son's) horn, but I know what you Lego people are like--almost as bad as the Magnum people..!
We had a blast doing this. Here's some of the pics (bonus points to those who can identify the custom pieces...):

This was Michael's idea, I can't take the credit. He originally just wanted to make a Higgins figure (my bias is pretty clear to my nearest and dearest), but when we found a perfect Magnum head, he decided to expand his vision and make all four main characters. And then we just kept finding cool stuff!

This didn't take much work, but I thought it would be funny to add to this project.... The charity masquerade ball!
Custom pieces--you got one! Here they are:
Higgins' hair (I made it out of what Michael tells me is "Luke Skywalker hair"--you can see its original form on the Rick figure)
Higgins' mustache (we found a perfect eye expression on one of the heads, but clean-shaven, so I had to add that)
Magnum's Tigers hat (added the D)
Higgins' typewriter (I glued the keyboard on, no existing piece would let me put the keyboard on at the right angle for an old-fashioned typewriter)
The double-ended paddle (they don't make them--we trimmed two paddles and glued them into a tube)
I think I may be missing one....anyway, the rubber chicken isn't Lego, but it's the only outsider in the group.
I think the Masquerade Ball is a *great* idea....let me get the maestro on that...

I couldn't spot the typewriter on the relatively small picture. Which one is it?
I thought one of those roof slates would suit as a typewriter and then just draw some dots on the sloping side to serve as the keys...

It was more *adapting* than making, really. Altering existing Lego pieces.
The typewriter--Lego makes a 1x2 "plate" (which is the correct term, Michael tells me, for the flat pieces) that is printed like a typewriter keyboard. And it actually does look different from a computer keyboard (which they also make). My problem was that there is no Lego piece that has the little pips (or whatever those are called) on the angle, where the keyboard would need to be to look like a typewriter. They have pieces with angles, but the angled surface is smooth, and the pips are on top. So I glued the keyboard plate to the smooth angled surface of the angle piece. Cheating.
You can see it in the Higgins set, right underneath the minifigure.
