I was very excited to see this, but then frankly a bit disappointed once I went to their webpage and saw the specs and execution. To me, it looks like a cheaply made Chinese knockoff of the real thing. I've been down that road before with the Apocalypse Now Captain Willard homage (Steeldive SD1970) and I told myself I wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

It's a shame because as someone else pointed out, the original early 80's Sea Quartz was a nice quality $700-$800 watch in today's money. It would have been nice to see them keep the DNA and pedigree of the original because the case and design really are classic.

Judging from the reviews on WatchUSeek and other watch enthusiast sites, Momentum seems to be a highly regarded watch brand (for their segment) and company. Their customer service has solid reviews. I’ve also noted several long-time watch enthusiasts who are jumping on the bandwagon and pre-ordering. I hear Hodinkee will be featuring the watch soon. Looks like the movement is Swiss made, too. I’m definitely not a horologist, but as long as it keeps accurate time and doesn’t leak when I’m diving wrecks off the coast, I’m good! 😂

Cheers!

After reading your response, I did some more reading and my initial assessment was probably a little harsh. I found a thread on watchfreaks forum that has a nice high resolution photo of the new sea quartz and it looked good. It is a shame that they couldn't use the original name and logo, but I'm sure it is complicated and messy.

Please let us know how yours looks once you receive it!

Thanks! St. Moritz Watch Corp. and Momentum have a long history in the diving community. Most of their dealers are dive shops, which I like. No clue if the Sea Quartz will actually be sold in the dive shops, but the connection lends to the watch’s authenticity, IMO.

Cheers!

The guys from The Grey Nato podcast have a segment on the new SQ this week (starting at the 24:03 mark): https://www.buzzsprout.com/2049759/12073225

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, as my collection of watches is getting pretty bloated and I've got an original. Still, this is a bargain for a watch with:
  • Screw-down crown and 300M water-resistance rating
  • Thick C3 Super-LumiNova luminous markers, hands, and bezel
  • Scratchproof sapphire crystal and bezel insert
I've looked carefully at images of the new watch and the details are pretty accurate, including the subtleties of the Monnin case shape. Impressive.

Yes, thank you for sharing the link. The guys on The Grey NATO know watches. Highly recommend checking out Jason Heaton’s novel Depth Charge. It’s a great read that features diving, dive watches, action, adventure and history.

The segment on the Momentum Sea Quartz 30 is great. Sounds like they’re impressed with the watch and watch company. They note Momentum’s extensive relationship with the diving community.

Looks like round 2 of the pre-order sold out quickly. Magnum fans everywhere grabbing up the watch!

Cheers!

Yeah, Depth Charge is a good read. Not a masterpiece, but a fun contribution to the genre Ian Fleming made famous.

Agreed. Best enjoyed with a dram of Scotch by the fire. Looking forward to Heaton’s second novel.

Amazingly faithful reproduction. The bezel is particularly well done.

I don't know anything about the watch ..this from Home From The Sea.

Thanks Sam, but that's the Rolex, not the Sea Quartz.

Here's a great close-up shot I found while watching some episodes yesterday. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to identify the episode. :)

Image

The clip from the episode actually lasts a few seconds, showing the second hand reaching 12, at which point Magnum knows to proceed... so it might have made for a good but boring .GIF image.

Thanks, it seemed all the good Magnum, P.I. names were already taken on here. That, or I'm just not very imaginative. So I went with basically the same time frame (January 1981 to December 1987, fits well within the MPI time frame), but of course produced decades apart.

This is a sharp looking watch, so I ordered one. The travel agency has been doing well lately.
