Really interesting stuff. I was intrigued about how they specifically didn't have Magnum carry his gun unless absolutely necessary. If I remember correctly in a couple of episodes he was, in fact, caught in situations without his gun. I also remember him saying something about not pulling your gun unless you're going to use it. I didn't realize that was all part of their plan for the character. It would certainly have been much different than many of the "shoot 'em ups" as Bellisario mentioned that came before.
