Ebbets Field and the perfect '80s Da Nang ball cap

#1 Post by Kifaru »

Recently I've been thinking about putting together a VMO-2 ball cap like the one used by TC and Magnum on the show. Finding a VMO-2 patch has always been easy enough, but getting the navy blue ball cap with green under the brim and that perfect 80s fit hasn't. However, there's this company called Ebbets Field Flannes and they make just the right ball cap, 80s fit, green under-brim and all. I bought a cap from them earlier this year and the quality of the wool and overall construction is simply outstanding.

They don't sell plain ball caps as standard, but they offer custom orders so there shouldn't be a problem getting a plain navy one.

Gotta buy 24 of them, it seems. At fifty bucks a pop, you're looking at a major investment....

We can make custom historic, fitted wool ballcaps in production runs of as few as 24 pieces. Single-piece custom caps are sometimes possible (felt lettering treatments only). Single-piece custom caps are generally $48.

I think they mean that unless you want an entirely original design you could buy a single cap. Then again I haven't contacted them on this yet.

there's ALOT of patches out there, but Rocknrobbie has one that's made from an actual screen used patch..can't get much closer than that... If you want the easiest way...do what I did..buy Robbie's patch and keep an eye on Ebay for 80's era blue navy hats....baseball teams that had the navy blue hats and either find a emblem (team) that has one small enough to cover over with the patch or do like I did..buy a seam ripper and take ALOT of time and patience and take them out...then cover it.... :D Good luck.
It made me do it Higgins!!!

Just shootin' this at ya'. Couldn't you buy a Detroit Tigers cap, and sew the Da Nang patch over it? I think that's what was done in the series. The caps themselves look identical in the show.

Problem is modern Tigers hats look different, the logo is thick (3D) and they have a small MBL logo on the back.

I have a Da Nang hat and thinking to make another one.
It has a slightly different fit compared to 80's hats and has blue underbill.
But it looks pretty cool and I like it very much.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought these hats were the vintage style caps.

It's funny to think that when they were sourcing the ball caps for the show, they most likely went with whatever run of the mill ball cap they could muster up.

Now, almost 30 years later, we are devoting a whole discussion on what color was under the brim...

BTW, put me down for two!
