According to Jeff MacKay,his first name was Jack MacReynolds.

Sorry for the pun, but I don't mean the episode, but the character.

I haven't left a message in some time, but I just read a bunch of your
messages and noted some curiosity about my character.

When I first came on the show as Mac, Don Bellisario and I discussed
what my name should be. I told him I'd like to name him for my
godfather, Jack MacReynolds. He thought that was fine, and proceeded
never to mention his first name, calling me only 'Mac.' Even today half
of my friends call me Mac... partly because of that character, but also
because that's a common nickname for someone with the name MacKay.

My email address has changed recently, explaining why I haven't
responded to personal notes. Sorry about that.

A sweet person named Lesley asked some time ago if I'd mind if she put
up a site dedicated to me. I was totally flattered, but wondered to
myself who would really want to see one. Anyway, she did it and it is
indeed appreciated. She calls herself the 'Queen of Outer Space.' The
address is: http://queen-of-outer-space.com/mackay.htm. She has sound
bytes, pictures, etc.

There is also the Gold Monkey site (for those who remember that series)
at: http://goldmonkey.com/

Thank you all for your questions and consideration. The Magnum
experience for me was one of the best in my life and I'm delighted that
you like the show.

Aloha,
Jeff 'Mac' MacKay

Jeff Mackay played "Sergeant Ski" in episode 1
then later played Lieutenant "Mac" McReynolds; I'm not sure if they ever said his first name in the show?!
Later episodes he played Jim Bonnick, Lt. Commander Jim Hillard aka Father Jim, Nevel Thompson... etc

Thanks for posting Jeff MacKay's answer from the year 2000. It was a little eerie** at first, until I realized I was reading an old post. Jeff played some memorable characters on TV. Shame we lost him in 2008 at the ripe un-old age of 60.

Rob

** You see I needed the name as Mac appears, either as a ghost or vision, in a short story I'm writing.

Rob,

I gave you Mac's recollection of the name but I don't know that it held true.
The question has been asked before, erock mentioned Mac MacReynolds.I could see TM at Pearl asking for Mac MacReynolds. You may want to wait and see what others come up with..

Erock...Here's Mac on his role as Ski.

TM! What was the name of his joint, Rick's place
or something like that? I forget when/how he made the
transition to the KKC as manager.<

The character of Rick was originally conceived as a take-off of the Bogart
role in Casablanca... hence, the name Rick, the white tux he wore in the pilot
and the 'snappy' tough-guy lingo. That quickly changed, but he remained TS's
source for underworld info that he needed from time to time.

I played the role of Ski, the gate guard at Pearl because Bellisario had
wanted to take me to Hawaii to play golf. As it turned out, the scenes (as I
recall there were two short ones) were shot at the back gate to Universal
Studios here in LA! Seems the navy wasn't sure yet whether or not they wanted
to help the show and the access to Pearl was not granted so they shot it here.

By the way, anyone notice how similar WK Stratton's role was to the subsequent
Mac roles? He's a fine actor and was supposed to play the recurring role that
eventually came to me, but there was an agent mixup and miscommunication...
not his fault at all... and Don decided to create Mac to be the source of
intelligence information instead. I've always felt a bit bad for WK for that
twist of fate.

Ah, I understand! Bad information is worse than no info at all! I can wait a bit. 8)
