I mostly know about it from the show. In watching old TV you'll see ambulances were basically hearses painted white before paramedics became a thing. It's a little creepy.

As for EMERGENCY! that's an even bigger puzzler for me. Apparently it has quite the fanbase. I just don't get it. JAG is the second best show DPB made. It's much, much better than NCIS and if you watch it from the beginning, it's not boring at all.

One thing I noticed about Nolan is that she has this "little girl voice" on the show which I thought was cute.
