Re: Season 1 Episode 1: I Saw the Sun Rise - Pilot (1.1)
I'm surprised you guys aren't whining about him using a cell phone, because Magnum didn't use one in the 80's show! It's a new show, they are not trying to be the 80's Magnum! Why is it called "Magnum P.I.", then? I get it, either you like it or not! But the comments about what they do now, that th...

Re: Flashback (3.7)
At the beginning, when Rick hangs up, Magnum hears a dial tone. Also, his antique phone has a dial on it. This means he has dial service (obviously), which means he would get a dial tone when picking up the handset (the same dial tone he just heard when Rick hung up), not an operator saying, "Number...

Re: Ki'i's Don't Lie (3.3)
Very nice! It looks like it's in amazing condition for a pay phone. I replaced the handset, face plate, coin release lever, and hook with new ones because the ones it came with were pretty beat up. The ones it came with were all aftermarket replacements anyway, so I didn't lose any original parts b...

Re: Ki'i's Don't Lie (3.3)
I've always loved the Western Electric 500/554 ring. I would describe it as ..."chocolatey". I made a recording of it and used it as a ring tone for a mobile phone when I had to use one. (but I much prefer to use a nicely contoured solid bakelite handset instead of putting a flat glass touchscreen ...

Re: Ki'i's Don't Lie (3.3)
You own the house you grew up in? You mean strangers owned it and you got it when it came on the market? If so, that's amazing. I lived in this house from the time I was born until I was 16 (1991), at which point I went to live with my father (who moved out when I was 12, due to divorce). My mother...

Re: Ki'i's Don't Lie (3.3)
My mother's yellow 554 stayed on the wall until the day the house sold in 2003. That was 29 years of perfect service, with only the cord being replaced. Yeah, the standard Western Electric phones were designed to last for decades without needing any repairs or maintenance. The Bell System owned eve...

Re: Simon & Simon - Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend
I didn't care much for this episode, and I didn't care much for Simon & Simon when I was a kid during its original run. I watched a lot of the episodes back then, because my father and older brother liked the show, and I figured that watching it was better than going to bed directly after MPI, but I...

Re: Ki'i's Don't Lie (3.3)
Dang, I miss my old wall phone. Never had a wall phone like that, but I still miss it. You didn't have to worry about where it was. It was always in the same spot. Old Faithful! :) Why don't you still have a wall phone? Do you no longer have a land line? My favorite wall phone is the Western Electr...

Re: Did You See the Sunrise? (1) (3.1)
Is it me or does Ivan carry the same Government Model 1911 .45 as Magnum does? Interesting that the KGB would issue him that.... It's a Tokarev , which ripped off the general appearance of various Colt pistols that had been primarily designed by John Browning. It looks more like the old Colt .32 an...

Re:
When Magnum and co. find the real Harold Farber, encased in some kind of chemical deep freeze, and learn that the other Farber is a clone of sorts, the story dives into science fiction territory. Now, I love science fiction in shows where it fits in, but I don’t think it works in MPI. Yes, the occa...

Re: Billy Joe Bob (2.1)
MaximRecoil, in that video of yours what exactly started the rotors turning? Was it the turning of the key or all those other switches that he flipped? He flipped 3 or 4 switches after turning they key and then later in the video he flipped a few more switches. This is all Greek to me. Turning the ...

Re: At what age did you discover MPI?
I heard many good things about it, and your description of it as a "big-screen feature movie weekly on your TV" is exactly why I think the critics have described more recent programming as a new golden age of television. The problem with modern shows like that, for me, is that it's not a "big-scree...

Re: Billy Joe Bob (2.1)
Interesting video. Lots of switching going on! That would seem to make the process of starting it (without a key) one step easier than in a car. You would only have to bypass the keyed ignition switch. All the other steps in starting it didn't seem to have any security. It's not unlike my buddies o...

Re: Billy Joe Bob (2.1)
I'm questioning whether a gas turbine helicopter even has an ignition key like a car. It doesn't start in the same way as piston engines. There are probably a series of steps that are needed to get it going and how many people understand this process and could then fly it away. I'm thinking the doo...

Re: Billy Joe Bob (2.1)
The idea that he could hot wire and fly TC's chopper, not being an experienced chopper pilot, is absolutely preposterous. They work it in, about the same time as he steals the chopper, that he flew "just about anything" back in Texas. (Kind of like Luke Sywalker.) Carol Ann says it after she re-app...
