Re: A.A.P.I. (7.5)

I think you've convinced me to check out one of the Chan movies. If you had to pick one for me to watch...? My personal favorite is Charlie Chan in Paris . Other watchable titles include Charlie Chan at Treasure Island , Charlie Chan in London , Charlie Chan in Honolulu , Charlie Chan in Egypt , Ch...

Re: A.A.P.I. (7.5)

Thanks Pohanu, glad to be aboard. No relation to the volleyball player, although I know of him. Sinjin is another way of writing/saying "St. John," my name. Not that I'm a saint. Just random. I also go by Keone. Earl Derr Biggers wrote the Chan novels. Biggers had visited Honolulu in 1919 and was im...

Re: A.A.P.I. (7.5)

Luther Gillis had me rolling in this funny episode revolving around an awards banquet, a murder, and the investigation of an international drug smuggling ring. Eugene Roche had some great lines and he delivered them to perfection with his over-the-top character Luther. "Everytime I came to Bananalan...

Re: Legend of the Lost Art (8.10)

"Diminutive in size, gargantuan in intellect!" I really enjoyed this blatant parody/homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark and movies that inspired it. I thought Margaret Colin was a good pairing as the love interest Connie Northrop. She is attractive, funny, and seems like a better physical match ...

Re: Ghost Writer (2.12)

Another memorable Elisha Cook Jnr performance immediately comes to mind. I am thinking of "Shane", particularly his gunfight scene with Jack Palance on a muddy rain swept main street. One of those cinematic moments that stay with you forever. Thanks Terry. I remember that scene as well. His charact...

Re: Out of Sync (7.19)

This is one of those wistful episodes about how tough it is to find love in later adulthood and keep it. It was difficult to watch Magnum sabotage his budding relationship with Cynthia, played by the incredibly beautiful Dana Delaney. There is a somewhat awkward but candid scene when they talk on th...

Re: Flashback (3.7)

This is an episode I might have skipped over when it originally aired, so I'm glad I gave it a look this time. I really liked the dream sequence and the parallel repeating stories separated by 46 years. It reminded me of a Ross MacDonald mystery, where an unsolved crime continues to resonate through...

Re: Mr. White Death (3.9)

Ernest Borgnine elevates this to an above-average episode. I can't imagine any other actor pulling this off; he brings instant credibility and likeability to the role. There are some classic funny moments at the expense of Higgins... and I thought for sure his nickname was going to be "Puddinhead!" ...

Re: The Case of the Red Faced Thespian (4.12)

I really enjoyed this episode for its Agatha Christie references, the Great Gatsby characters, the 'whodunnit' style, and some very funny scenes. John Hillerman was a riot! He got to really ham it up as Sir Fearing Pangborn, "the world's greatest Tragedian." I like the fact that Magnum is a devoted ...

Re: The Big Blow (3.22)

This episode brought back memories of Hurricane Iwa, which hit the islands in November 1982. It knocked out water, power and phone service on the North Shore for several days. It was a pretty big deal, especially considering hurricanes are relatively rare events in Hawaii. It no doubt inspired this ...

Re: Birdman of Budapest (3.16)

^^That is a great photo of the legendary Sylvia Sydney in her prime. I remember her from Dead End with Bogart. Fritz Feld has a cameo as Lars the zookeeper... and does his signature "pop" to the bad monkeys! There is an ornithologist who makes an amazing bird tonic and lives in the remote Haiku vall...

Re: Mixed Doubles (3.10)

A tennis tournament serves as the backdrop for this average entry with some funny moments to recommend it. Former child star Kim Richards plays a spoiled young tennis phenom. She is very cute and perfect for this role. The central mystery kind of fizzles at the end but there are some funny moments, ...

Re: Ghost Writer (2.12)

I agree, Patch Mackenzie was very beautiful in this episode. This was one of the more lighthearted stories; more rom-com than mystery. I always like it when Magnum gets the girl, and in this case Patch (Virginia Fowler) was a worthy catch--a great combination of beauty and brains. Every private eye ...

Re: Dream A Little Dream (4.20)

Higgin's 1944 surf contest using Messerschmitt wings for surfboards had to be his most outrageously dubious claim. I laughed out loud at Hillerman's typical droll delivery. Then he admits it was a ridiculous claim. The multiple flashbacks tend to slow things down. This episode shows us TM at a cross...

Re: The Welcome Wagon

I just reconnected with this series over the holidays. I grew up in Hawaii and lived there when it originally aired. I now live in California and I'd originally watched mainly to reminisce about the various locations and the time period, but then got hooked (again) on the characters and the stories....
