We had some great investigative work and discovered the sources for most (if not all) of Jay's Aloha shirts worn in the first season (that thread is here: http://magnum-mania.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3834 )

Has anyone recognized or discovered sources for shirts seen in the second season yet?

I'm really hoping we start seeing some repeats, especially the original red Avanti palm tree shirt he received from Higgins... to me, that's Jay's equivalent of Tom's red 'jungle bird' shirt...

The usage of shirts so far in the second season has been pretty poor. They've taken a step down on the dress/casual ladder, being used mostly for non-work related activities, such as visiting the LA Rams practice and watching their preseason game. If I recall correctly, they've been paired exclusively with shorts which also degrades their status.

The shirts themselves are just not that interesting compared to the first season shirts; they appear to be designer label rather than from traditional aloha shirt manufacturers, and as typical, have strange cuts and other deviations like mismatching pockets. They have a tendency to look cheap, in stark contrast to the multi-hundred dollar prices they often sell for. I would like to see more bold usage of colors in the shirts as well, as they've all had a muted quality, and in some cases, actually look as if the whole shirt has been intentionally faded in color.

There are some other decisions from the costume designer that are curious, such as switching from Magnum's near-exclusive usage of boots in the first season (save for the occasional pair of sandals), to wearing high-top sneakers in the second. It feels as if there may have been a conscious decision to dress down the character, for reasons unknown.

If I am successful in identifying any of the shirts, I will post back here.

Could you please give us a example of a Aloha shirt that Magnum wares with a mismatched pocket ? I really most have missed that . Most of the shirts that I have found so far have been from season 1 but I am liking the muted colors . I own Red palm tree shirt but find I don’t ware it much it is just to bright for my taste . I liked the shirt from episode 3 “Knight Last Forever” classy and subtle can ware it anywhere. I will post a link if I find it .

After seeing the show I think the fit of these two shirts will be about the same . Did you get get the shirt you ordered yet ?

Yes, if you wear a large red jungle bird shirt, order a large black or navy bamboo shirt. I generally aim for a 47-48" chest now but the medium 46" Paradise Found was a bit snug - I thought that the large 51" Paradise Found would be too generous but it fits me just like my large Paradise Found black Star Orchid shirt that I've had for years.

Thanks that was a easy one after I found a good picture of it and saw the rams head . I did not pick up the detail when the show aired

Is there a shirt that you like and want to focus on finding ? There are a lot to choose from .

Well, I love to be able to catalog and source each one, just because it's (usually) possible, but I know I can't afford to buy ALL of them, and some don't really 'speak' to me (like the black and gold Avanti 'Hula Moon' from Season 1 - I already have a bunch of black-based Aloha shirts as it is).

So I tend to lean more toward specific colors or specifically iconic ones, like the red Avanti 'Breeze' ( because that was the very first one that he got in the series) or the yellow Avanti 'Makai' ( because I like yellow and don't have a mostly yellow Aloha shirt until now), and more recently, the Paradise Found 'black w/bamboo' because it was the very first shirt to be in both the original series and the new one. ( I actually wished to myself that the new series would never have Jay don the red 'jungle bird' shirt because that just seemed too bold, and to me the red Avanti 'Breeze' is Jay's version of Tom's red 'jungle bird'. At least they minimized the use to a 30-second, post-episode tag in a very casual nightclub setting so it somehow seemed massively more acceptable than if he had worn it through an entire episode.)

I have collected movie and TV prop replicas and exact items from original sources most of my adult life (and even before), and jackets and shirts are a lot of fun to me because I can actually wear them out and about and possibly generate conversation rather than just have them sit at home in a display case.

I am actually in the process of documenting the types of shirts that Tom wears throughout the original series, and how often they get repeated so that ultimately I can calculate which is the shirt that he wore more than any other. People always assume that the red jungle bird would be that one, but that remains to be seen. I am also trying to capture a decent screenshot of each one so that when I am done re-watching the original series I can add these photos into each of the individual episode threads in the main part of this forum.

It would also be nice to be able to source all of the original series shirts as well, however, I think that will be impossible for most of them after so many decades of time gone by.
