Can someone explain to me how I post a link with just a word that people can click on instead of having to cut and paste a whole URL address?

eg. if I want the word 'BANANAS' to go to www.banana.com but don't want to have to cut and past the www.banana.com URL. I see the 'URL' button on the message post icons, however whenever I put a word in this it just adds to each end of the highlighted text and ... url]banana or http://www.banana.com
