Magnum Mania!

Denny Miller, who played "Ox" in Three Minus Two died on September 9, 2014. He was 80 years old.

He could be seriously imposing and threatening but he could also play characters who were sweet and gentle. Miller poked fun at his own image (sort of) in that Magnum, P.I. episode.

Miller also played the surfer in the only episode of Gilligan's Island I've ever watched from start to finish.

I always enjoyed his episodes (save for maybe Photo Play... but that's through no fault of his character).

Strange sometimes that someone can have all the "formula" elements of becoming a major star, and fate or luck or whatever just doesn't let it happen.

He was tall, good looking, "macho" with decent acting ability, yet we, (or at least I), have never seen him in anything more than minor or supporting role. Ok, the Tarzan role cast him as the lead, but didn't make a huge box office wave, as I recall. Not enough "raw talent"?.....I don't know, he did a good job in everything I've ever seen him in. Bad agent?...who knows. Personal life got in the way? Could speculate from now till the end of time, never really going to come up with a concrete answer, as it will always be an observation by whoever is expressing their opinion at the moment. All subjective, so to speak. I thought he did a good job whenever he was on screen. I liked him best in MPI in the Sense of Debt episode (4.8 ) as Leon Platt.

Always sad to see someone pass, but I guess 80 is not a bad run, but getting nearer to that everyday, one likes to think that it's merely another stop gap on the way to the actual "end".

Thanks for posting the information on Denny Miller's passing. I had no idea. Newspapers with their ever shrinking content just don't cover the passing of minor celebs like they used to.

That's sad! I remember him from so many things; Tarzan, Wagon Train, Mona McCluskey, Gilligan' Island, and Magnum, and so many other tv shows! Played basketball at UCLA for John Wooden. Died from ALS, at age 80. RIP Denny!

Never throw a punch at a redwood. And never try to steal Tarzan's fish sticks.
