This edition concerns Magnum's name: Can you name what character calls him, "Tom"? (Will likely separate the experts from the novices from among us. a joke. An interesting question don't you think because characters invariably call him, "Thomas," unusual for American culture.

Didn't his mother call him "Tom"? Even though I just watched the entire series recently, I can't think of who else might have .. except .. Mac? No, I think it was Mom.

Also, while it might be more common to call someone "Tom" rather than Thomas in America, it isn't that rare.

Hi guy!
Thank you for your post. I don’t know if his mom called him, "Tom," but I think it unlikely if you follow my drift at a thread dedicated to this question:

In truth, as I stated elsewhere, I’m a newbie and haven’t seen all the programs but surely the answer to the main question resides in Thomas Magnum’s life before becoming adult. In the main you know Magnum only through his best friends, Rick and TC, who presumably first met Magnum when they all were well into adulthood. If Magnum goes by Thomas with his best friends—now—then probably it is the same with other friends. But what when he was younger?

Even though his own mother probably used “Thomas” (again please see the above link), it is likely outside his house his friends used “Tom.” Evidence for this comes in the first (?) episode when the sister of his best friend in school changes from “Thomas” to “Tom” in Magnum’s residence. It is likely then that he was called “Tom” by his friends. In fact, in my own life I experienced the same phenomenon of actually being called two different names according to family or friends both names eventually having relatively equal emotional meaning (positive), sometimes both names used in the same home for the same purpose! :magnum: :magnum:
