Growing a Magnum 'stache

The guys in my office have an annual moustache competition and it's coming up. I thought I'd try to grow one resembling Mag's. I believe Higgins refers to it in one episode as "overly aggressive" - beautiful.

My question is, does anyone have any grooming tips that might help me on my quest? Unfortunately, my facial hair is blonde, but style is what I'm looking for. If you're going to have a 'stache, you might as well have one like TMs!

Well for one some people use the same moisturizer for their hai on their beard and mustaches to keep it softer. Taking a multivitamin that also has the right type vitamin combo is good for skin and hair. Running a mustache brush after showering or washing your face also helps with the quality of one's "stache". Hope this helps and hope you win!

I've had a "Magnum-esque" stache since 1976. I suggest to just let it grow! :P

Is this your first stash? You might grow one for a week or so and shave it off. My Magnum stash aka Porn Star stash grew in much fuller and thicker the second time after I shaved off the first one.

My take is this....

Try to grow a full beard first, or at least a Van Dyke. Trim the chin area, but let the upper lip grow and grow! Unfortunately, a full on Magnum 'stache requires a bit of genetic luck. I've tried to do it, but have failed. Selleck is able to have a full (straight) line of hair underneath his nose, whereas mine has a slight fade off. I can pull off a nice Rhett Butler though!

Certainly a lot to go on. Thanks guys. I'm tempted to wipe the slate clean after a week, but I'm too worried about it not growing back in time.

There seems to be a fine line between something macho, like TM's, or creepy, like Ron Jeremy's. I'm trying to avoid the latter!

Be forewarned . . . once you have a 'stache for an extended period of time you will find your upper lip will whither away to a thin strip.

The dreaded frog lip!!!!

I tried it once while in the Navy. I had it for about three weeks and could not get used to the idea of it so I shaved it off. I'll probably never try to grow another one again but you never know!

I've decided to grow a beard again this summer after having had one in my 20s. The last one was closely cropped and I had it for six years. Now, my formerly-blonde hair is mostly white! I'm not sure how long to let it grow before I trim it--perhaps a month? I want to go for a Hemingway look for a trip to St. Augustine this summer...My own stache is well below TM standard, but it has filled in better as I approach my 40s...I already grow a decent beard, for a blonde...

Try "Just For Men", the kind for beards and moustaches. Dark Brown.
You can play around with the color and the length of your 'stache and you'll do just fine.

The best part, when you finally get around to shaving it off, you'll look much younger.

Ha! I hadn't thought of adding a little tint to the hair. That might be a bit more of what I'm looking for. Not sure if that conforms to the rules or not. Thanks for the tip!

Ah.......But we need to know if you are ready and can you pass the "Real Men Wear Mustaches" test;

1) Having friends and strangers say you look like a porn star from the eighties is taken as a compliment.......
2) Your Hawiian Shirts are some of the most expensive pieces of your wardrobe and cost twice of what you pay for your Jeans.
3) You never worry about what size ties or lapels are "in" as you keep the same classic style suits for years as long as they fit and rarely have to wear one anyway........
4) And just basically, you like what you like because you like it and not what some jerk with "hair product" says you should like.......

I only have a goatee beard but my mustache doesn't look anything like that of Magnum's. A person at work however has a mustache that looks so much like TM's that people have nicknamed him Magnum before in the past!
