From issue #9 of Television Chronicles (April, 1997):

"If there was a season that did everything right, the fifth year was it. Characters unveil more of their souls than ever before."

I disagree with the "a season that did everything right" part, but agree with the characters getting better Episodes like All For One, Mac's Back, and Echoes of the Mind all feature great examples of the four guys and their growing relationship. However, those are the only truly great episodes of that year, though there are still some decent moments spread throughout the season.

I must have been under the influence of a powerful thought-control drug administered by Ivan or in a very charitable mood to declare Echoes of the Mind a "truly great episode."

Yeah, season five was one of the weaker seasons. The only two I liked less were 6 and 8.

These are some good to great ones though. I like All for One, Luther Gillis: File #001, Blind Justice, Let Me Hear the Music, Torah, Torah, Torah and The Legacy of Garwood Huddle.

marlboro, have you seen the Best and Weakest Seasons thread? The Magnum-Mania Collective ranked the seasons. I have five at second-to-last.

Edit: Ah, I see that you contributed to that topic.

I like season 5, its one of my favorites (along with season 2). Excepting Kiss of the Sabre, most of the season was solid, and some episodes were excellent. All-in-all one of the best seasons IMO, though I know that's not a popular viewpoint on here.

Season 5 took a definite fall from 6th to 15th in the Nielsen Ratings and came in 7th out of 8th in my Best and Weakest Seasons calculations. IMHO this season really didn't "stink the place up" but it came close. I distinctly remember the first three episodes Echoes of the Mind (1+2) and Macs Back. I think Sharon Stone had something to do with me being riveted to the screen and I like Jeff McKay and really liked the way they reintroduced him. After that the season began to sink. It came up for air with Luther Gillis but produced a poor two-parter with the Vietnam connection. (I did like the fact they all, including Higgins got together on that! Camaraderie!!!)

Even the guest stars were weak in number and role. Pat Hingle as Garwood Huddle and Dennis as Lacey Fletcher. What a waste of good actors!

Season 5 only had 5 episodes out of 21 in the TOP Forty matching the 5 episodes of Season 8 in the TOP 40. But Season 8 only had 13 episodes!!

I kept watching though...I never gave up as I think Magnum P. I. had become part of me.

What? You didn't like Tran Quac Jones, or Betty Windom (Cassy Yates), or Lacy Fletcher, or Ms. Jones, or Det. Jean Claude Fornier, or the Dancing Chicken! :)... Yeah, Season Five had some issues! Still, better than most TV shows of the day! I love "Echoes of the Mind" and "Mac's Back" and "Little Games" and "All For One" and the Luther and Carol episodes! Shoot, the worst Magnum episodes are still so much fun to watch! ICONIC! :)

Season 5, contrary to popular opinion among many fans, is one of the series' best. Just look at all the great episodes during the season. I rest my case.

I just finished my run through Season 5, so now it's time for the really fun part: compilation videos! I have a blast putting these together. Here is the first one, Season 5's breaking of the 4th wall. They didn't do very much of it in Season 5.

This one was new for Season 5. Perhaps I'll capture Seasons 1-4 on my next run through the series.
