I just got my MPI Season 4 DVD in the mail and the menu is different. When you go with the episode select, you don't get the scene select and information screen I liked from the first 3. I wonder why Universal did away with that feature.

Agreed! That made it much easier to view when you could skip to a scene.

Season 4 dipped slightly in the Nielsen ratings to 6th but climbed slightly above Season 3 in the average episode ratings to 4th out of 8 with a 8.2714 average. I liked Season 4 better than Season 3 as well. Overall it gets a "not bad but not great" rating. The writers, directors and producers just kept the ship sailing.

Season 4 gave us new characters such as Luther Gillis, Icepick and Kathleen Lloyd as Carol Baldwin. I think all were very positive additions to the show. Season 4 also had Gillian Dobb as Agatha Chumely in 8 episodes. I really think she added an extra dimension to the hoity-toity, "Oahu/Honolulu/Hawaiian Society" concept that Higgins always seem to relish in. I loved it.

Season 4 beat all seasons by placing 8 episodes in the Top 40 rankings of this website.

The guest stars were minimal with Cindy Pickett, Patrick McNee, Kay Lenz, Leslie Uggams, Carol Burnett, Gretchen Corbett and a couple of Detroit Tigers as themselves.

Season four makes me think that Magnum, P.I. has become aware of its success, as the comedy episodes ("Red Faced Thespian" and "I Witness" immediately come to mind) occasionally suffer from "The Cutes" in ways that previous seasons' comedy episodes did not, but season four is still great.

However, there are many episodes that embody what we love about Magnum, P.I.: The MPI Fab Four coning together to help one of their own ("Home From the Sea", arguably one of, of not THE series' finest hour(s)); Vietnam ("The Look"; "Paradise Blues";), Hollywood's Golden Age and private eye/investigator antecedents (the Luther Gillis episodes; "Holmes is Where the Heart Is";), as well as The MPI Fab Four's past (numerous episodes).

It is a lot of fun even with the Higgins amnesia/delusion silliness, but yes, a great "hang out" episode and one of my favorites as well.

I wonder if Ronald Lacey tortured Selleck during the filming: "Tom, Raiders was magnificent! A one-of-a-kind cinematic endeavor! You should have been in it--as Indy! Why did you not take the part?!? Indy could have been youriconic role!!!

I'm sure nothing of the sort was said. :D

Just finished up this turn through Season 4. Lots of great moments, but a couple of real stinkers too. As others have pointed out countless times here, however, even in the worst episodes, there are always a few moments that make watching it enjoyable, no matter how dry the story line well might have been that week they finished off the script back in the 80s. To paraphrase the fishing bumper stickers, a day watching bad Magnum episodes still beats the best day at work.
