I decided to make this a Magnum 4th of July so I watched this one, followed by "Death and Taxes". The latter is one of my absolute favorites (an easy TOP 5) but the former is also an excellent episode - a tale of survival and flashbacks to TSM's father and what made TSM the man we know and love. There are no bad guys in this story (unless you count the "Hot & Heavy turkeys") so it's a bit of a departure from the norm, but it's also what makes it special and gives it a uniqueness which makes it stand out. It doesn't have a memorable villain like The Ripper or Ivan (which is probably why it doesn't make my TOP 5) but it definitely does a great deal to expand the Magnum-verse and explain the character of TSM. It also has a very powerful and emotional ending. I've seen this episode twice before. I thought making my 3rd viewing on the 4th would be ideal. It was!

I completed my annual 4th of July tradition of watching this episode and as usual it never disappoints. Lots of emotion and background on Magnum, I love it. Rick and his date on the boat cracks me up, especially when he's yelling at his chef Wong about the non American menu lol. Thomas' tradition of being alone on the fourth is really cool to me, especially with the rationale of the day his dad died and his military background. What an excellent way to kick of season 4!

I started re-watching Season 4 a few days ago.
This episode is one of my favourites and one of those that I perfectly remember since I saw it on TV, many years ago.
It scores 9 for me.

(Being a child, I was "curious" about the fact that Magnum's father was... Sgt. Getraer from "CHiPs" (I used to watch it at the time too)).
"Zeus, Apollo, get out of my Ferrari!"
"Mr. Masters' Ferrari"

I've always thought that Magnum's father looks (and acts) like a morphing of Harrison Ford and Jack Nicholson.

Has anybody ever tried to tread water for hours? I'm thinking of trying it this summer. I won't go for 24 hours (...unless I get caught in the Molokai Express), but I'll go for at least an hour. Apparently, "Any 6 year old can tread water for an hour."

I'll shout, "I made it, Dad!" and my wife will say, "Well of course you did, you idiot. You're in shallow water only 200 feet from the house. Now come in for supper."

Someone rated Home From the Sea ‘just awful’?

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

It wasn't that it wasn't well acted, but I think the writing was weak for the episode. I feel like they had a great concept, but didn't really know how to execute it so they took a lot of short cuts to get the ending they needed.
I too am in the minority in the sense that I didn't really like this episode, but I also think it was very well done... I just didn't enjoy it. Magnum splashing around in the water in present day and splashing around as a child and both of these repeated over and over and over just got to be way too much for me. Again, this is an important and well done episode, but not one I enjoy. I liked "Solo Flight" much more.

I found myself more interested in what the other guys were doing on the holiday. Rick's shady manipulation in particular was hilarious. And I see that's the part that got on someone else's nerves in this thread, haha. And I know this'll be unpopular but I found the last line, "I made it, Dad... why didn't you?" to be just a little.......corny maybe?
The weakest aspects for me were the subplots. When Higgins was short with Agatha and even when he told her it wasn't her he had wanted to marry she took it very Britishly and didn't seem overly emotional, but she got completely heated over a game of chess? It was out of character and kind of shocking.
In the first place, she cried when he told her he was marrying somebody else. Secondly, as has been stated she was not mad about the chess game but about the fact that he was so clueless about what she was getting at with her talk about the sunset and whatnot. She was making a move on him and he thought she was putting it on to distract him from the chess game. When I saw this video come across my Facebook feed it totally reminded me of the chess scene... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAYR-i4S-ZE

You're crazy! Insane, I tell you!

I thought Solo Flight was a pathetically obvious attempt to copy the success from Home From the Sea. I hated it.

Yes, it was. However, for some reason I enjoyed the setting/scenario more. Maybe because of the set up of Magnum being so depressed over his failures and dependency on others to do little things for him (the mail, the bar tab), maybe because he self-rescues in the end, maybe because "Home From the Sea" made me freakin' seasick, I'm not sure.

I wonder if Magnum ever found his lost surf ski. He could probably get T.C. to help him search with the helicopter, but T.C. would complain about "gas money, baby".

I guess one could say he has bad luck with surf skis...

A great start to the 4th season, with some really moving moments: A 9.5 for me. The ensemble is in place: Higgins is doing something very Higgins playing polo and having tea with Agatha, TC is being awesome with the kids he's coaching, and Rick's out on a date on the club yacht.

Just a slight ding for including scenes from past episodes, which for a short time verges on clip-show territory. I get why they're there, I just would've preferred more scenes with mom and dad.

Just one question - his father's watch seems to be different than the watch he's wearing on the helicopter w/TC. What's that about? Or am I wrong?

I had straight hair when I was young, it didn’t get curly until I was in my teens.

I can’t speak for the eyes though. :magnum:
