I know i have made mental notes of it throughout seasons 1-2-3 so far, but this Foiled Again episode has pushed me to comment. There seems to be this Magnum gun phenomena throughout. How many times do we see obvious scenarios where he could have and should have brought his gun and he does not for sake of writers mixing it up?

Not just Foiled Again, but the prior episode.....Flashback. He knows Drew brings a gun to the house yet he lives out the charade only to rely upon TC to cover him........a flimsy strategy at best.

I'd hope these general season discussion threads will gain some steam because they could make for many interesting conversations and little facts about the show.

Magnum's third season was its highest ranked, finishing at #4, or tied for #3 with M*A*S*H for the 1982-83 TV season.

The third season has always been my favorite, but a reassessment of a season-by-season ranking is also due around here.

I think I noticed a consistency problem with the episode "The arrow that is not aimed". I posted this on season 2 poll already as well. In this episode tozan has to do seppuku. higgins had to inform magnum what was going on, and why, and magnum acts like he didn't know anything about what it was or even how to pronounce it correctly, calling it seppuki.

In the episode from season 2, "The taking of Dick McWilliams", he seemed to know immediately what was going on, AND how to pronounce it correctly (and higgins wasn't there). Is this a flub, or did he just mysteriously forget a year later what it was and how to pronounce it correctly? :o

I absolutely love season 3! This season rocks right from the beginning with Nam heavy "Did you see the sunrise" and just keeps rolling with a few of my fav all time episodes (Did you see the Sunrise, Of Sound Mind, Birdman of Budapest, Mixed Doubles) It also has several just good solid episodes (Foiled Again, Faith and Begorrah, I Do, The Big Blow, Mr. White Death) that I can watch again and again. The only real flop in season 3 for me is "By it's Cover". I liked the way that this season's episodes were extremely diverse from very serious to funny to somewhere in between. That's what I love about Magnum, one episode will be an intense nail biter like "Did you see the sunrise" and another could be a total laugher like "Faith and Begorrah". Anyway, just think this is a great season and I find myself going back to it often to find one to watch:)

Season 3 may have been the best rated season according to Nielsen (#4) but it was definitely middle of the pack at 5th out of 8 in my average episode ratings in Best and Weakest Seasons. Maybe die-hard fans are more critical than the general television viewing public. It was pretty hum-drum if you ask me but then again, I stayed with MPI religiously.

It started out with a bang (literally) and arguably the best episode of the series and also gave us arguably the worst show of the series. (Did You See the Sunrise and Two Birds of a Feather). It ended with a figurative bang when someone got tossed off a lighthouse. (Did anything ever come of that besides Rick's look of astonishment? I barely remembered that when I watched it on this site and don't remember anything else but it has been over 30 years.)

It had a bunch of recognizable names as guest stars including Morgan Fairchild, Ernest Borgnine, Henry Gibson, Annie Potts, William Lucking, Joanna Kerns, Stuart Margolin, James Doohan and the Simon brothers but apparently not enough to make it a truly memorable season in my book. It introduced us to the character of Carol Baldwin and the guest star of Kathleen Lloyd but not as each other.

I really enjoyed the first half of season 3, but I find that the last half of season 3 (or maybe it's the last 1/3 or 1/4) brings some of my least favorite episodes, and I have to force myself to watch. It's nice to see that I don't seem to be the only one for whom that is true. I have the last 4 eps to watch before I move on to season 4.

Mahalo again ENSHealy,
Your dedication and impressive attention to detail is very much appreciated. In the future as each of us maniacs further revisit the classic MPI Seasons we will also subsequently have the additional bonus of viewing these terrific compilation videos. :D :magnum:
