On a blown off head that is still in place:

As I mentioned before Higgins proved that: At twelve feet double ought blows ones bloody head off. But when the coroner pushes the girls body back into the "body deposit" after Stein has fainted you can see that her head is still in place. They even cared to make her a ginger.
... Then I'm history... Walking history... I'll be just another chapter in one of those dumb books Louise Peardon makes me read: "Prince Danny Lin, assassinated July." ...

I don't think it was throwaway; it sets up the "ballistics report" scene in the house where Higgins shows up with the targets that he's blasted with presumably the same shotgun, to show the effect of a shotgun blast at X amount of feet vs. Y amount of feet. Which by the way contains another mention of Five-O. (Norman: "He's not from Five-O!" Magnum: "I never said he was.") Admittedly, every time I watch the clay pigeons scene I really want Magnum to take the bait just to see what Higgins had intended to say.
David Norman is, of course, played by Ian McShane, who would go on to be known her in the United Kingdom for playing ‘Lovejoy’ (1986, 1991-1994). By the way, although Magnum and Lovejoy are quite different characters – Lovejoy was an antiques dealer- there are some notable parallels with the character, not least in both of them often addressing the camera.
McShane would be seen again in ‘Magnum’ in the popular third season episode ‘Black on White’.
Ian McShane will always be Al Swearengen to me. 8)

Perhaps he has a penchant for trashy entertainment. After all, just look at the novels he writes. 8)

Danny Lin wrote: Higgins unknowingly enjoying himself a little too much when he with his typical British humour sums up: "In other words, gentlemen: At twelve feet double ought blows ones bloody head off (laughs)." was hilarious!!
The largely unspoken byplay between Higgins and Norman in this scene is excellent. McShane is great. His expressions upon serving the Scotch with no bloody ice have already been mentioned. Norman's increasing discomfort with Higgins' increasingly graphic descriptions about being hit in various areas of the head or throat etc. is a treat. Best part is when Higgins lets the already-overly-long ballistics report get completely out of control and segue into a war story about raiding a supply dump as Norman slowly walks up behind him with an appalled expression and finally shouts "Get him to SHUT UP!"

I always saw it as David producing mostly B-movies but also having some higher-brow output (like Di Laurentiis), which wasn't uncommon back then. Still, it's funny to think about in light of the "Higgins is Robin" question.

IIRC the movie he says he liked was called "Khyber Pass" which at least suggests a more serious war film.

Yes funny that the Khyber pass is on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and that Higgins was there in a battle haha

Yep which definitely suggests it was probably a pretty good and accurate film.

A couple corrections to the episode guide are needed:

1. "Magnum makes his first reference to writing a book on how to be a world-class private investigator - Page 1, Investigate the crime scene". Magnum doesn't actually make reference to writing a book, he merely states "So I did what every private investigator manual tells you on page one--investigate the scene of the crime."
2. "N58243 is the chopper with floatation gear..." flotation is misspelled.
3. "...but she ain't got the guts to blood-up the old face?" The subtitles say "blotto the old face" but I personally believe she said "blot out the old face" which I think makes more sense.
4. "This is a common occurance on the show...." Actually, it's a common occurrence.

Sorry James, I suffer from the same spelling and grammar compulsion that golfmobile mentioned earlier in this thread.

I count 27.

Any idea what the two crossed things are? The middle one is a shower, I assume, I think we actually see Thomas use it in Adelaide, but what are the two other things?

Huh. In retrospect it seems like a dumb question. I think I was thrown off by the fact they're all black and there's no bamboo/wicker covering. That's what I'm going with anyway, as a cover story.

Maybe there is a covering but they have been burned and that's why they're all black.
